HAPPY CAMP – The number-two Happy Camp Lady Indians defeated the third-seeded Bishop Quinn Lions 46-38 to advance to the NSCIF D-VI championship game versus number-four Greenville (16-11) this Saturday at Chico State. The game is scheduled for 11:00 am.

It took over 2:30 for either of the teams to score at the opening of the game. Bishop Quinn went up 2-0 at the 5:27 mark. Then, Kelsea McLeran put back a rebound for the Lady Indians, and Cassidy Hammon nailed a 3-ball to start Happy Camp on an 11-1 run. Happy Camp led 11-3 with 1:22 left in the quarter. Bishop Quinn broke the run with a hoop just before the end of the first half.

The Lady Lions chipped away at Happy Camp’s lead until they narrowed the gap to 12-9 late in the half. The Lady Indians were unable to notch a field goal for over eight minutes until Hammon made a basket with 1:13 left before intermission to make it 14-9. Happy Camp led 16-12 at the half. (more…)

SUTTER - The Yreka Miners boys’ basketball team’s improbable and seemingly impossible run through the NSCIF D-IV playoff field continued with a 65-52 win over second-seeded Sutter in the semifinals. The win propels the Miners (8-17) into the section championship game against one-seed Central Valley (24-3) this Saturday at Chico State. The game is scheduled for 4:15 pm.

Leading Yreka was Brandon Meeks with 14 points and 4 steals. Jimmy Kutzer was 7-for-8 from the free throw line and had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jeremy Turner and Andrew Ward each had 12 points. Turner had 11 boards and Ward pulled down 10. Aaron Sinnott contributed 8 points and 6 assists.

However, the team pulled together and pulled out an overtime-win against the Gridley Bulldogs to punch their ticket to the NSCIF D-IV championship game.

Yreka scored the first four points of the game, but Gridley responded with a 12-0 run to take a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish until midway through the fourth quarter. The Lady Miners trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half and eight points in the third quarter.

Yreka played full court pressure defense for most of the fourth quarter and into overtime which led to several turnovers by the Bulldogs. With the Lady Miners trailing 40-37, Kaitlin Weckerle hit the first of her three fourth quarter 3-balls to tie it at 40-40, with 4:20 remaining in regulation. A bucket by Ashlie Smith gave the Miners their first lead since the start of the game, 42-40.

A pair of Gridley freebies made it 42-42, and a Bulldogs’ steal led to a bucket that gave them the lead back 44-42. Weckerle then dialed long distance twice in a row to put the Miners back on top 48-44.

Gridley cut Yreka’s lead to 48-45 on a free throw. Then, with four seconds remaining Nancy Santana hit a 3-pointer for the Bulldogs to force overtime with the score knotted at 48-48. (more…)

myers1.jpgWEED – The College of the Siskiyous Lady Eagles (23-6) will host Solano this Saturday at 7:00 pm for the first round of the California Community College Women’s Basketball State Championships. COS is seeded sixth in the North Region, and is a Golden Valley Conference co-champion (8-2). Solano is the 11-seed and Bay Valley Conference champion (14-0, 21-11).

COS is led by Lady Eagles career scoring leader Karlee Myers who told siskiyouyouth.com that the Eagles really came together as a team this year and stepped up their play to win the GVC.

“We’re looking forward to a home game this Saturday. We’re ready to bounce back from our loss to Shasta,” said Myers.

mount-shasta-christy-carter-ski.jpgMOUNT SHASTA - The Mt. Shasta Bears ski and snow board team finished on top of the North-1 Division in skiing by winning both the girls and the boys skiing championships, as well as the overall ski championship. The Bears also won the overall snowboard division title by finishing first in girls snowboard, and second in boys snowboard.
Yreka finished second overall in both skiing and snowboarding. Yreka was second in both boys and girls skiing. The Miners finished first in boys snowboard and second in girls snowboard.

Third place overall in both skiing and boarding went to Weed. The Cougars were third in girls skiing and fifth in boys skiing. (more…)

happy-camp-butte-valley-tripp-basketball.JPGHAPPY CAMP – The Butte Valley Bulldogs (12-11) scored first and held the lead 3-0, but that was one of the few up notes for the Bulldogs, as the third-seeded Happy Camp Indians (13-8) took the lead 4-3 on buckets by Meeko Sanchez and Dave Schmidt, and led the rest of the way.

Happy Camp led 16-10 at the end of one quarter, and extended their lead to 17 points, 37-20, by halftime.

The Bulldogs managed to trim one point off the Indians’ lead in the third quarter, primarily behind the 3-point proficiency of Ryan Gleason to make it 50-34. However, the fourth quarter was all Indians. With the Indians up 53-37, Phil Tripp stole the ball and went the distance for a hoop that started an 18-8 run for Happy Camp to finish out the game, with a 71-45 win.

Tripp led the Indians with 18 points and 4 swipes. Sanchez had 13 points and 7 boards. Dave Schmidt put up 10 points. David Ward had 7 rebounds and Nick Bryant had 6. Joey Polmateer dished out 5 assists. (more…)

happy-camp-westwood-hammon-basketball-text.JPGHAPPY CAMP – Perhaps a bit rusty after their first-round bye, the second-seeded Happy Camp Lady Indians (14-5) barely survived a visit by the number-seven Westwood Lady Lumberjacks (12-12), 49-47.

The first quarter was a sloppy back and forth affair with four lead changes and three ties. At the end of one, Westwood led 11-9. The Lady Lumberjacks went into the locker room at halftime with a 22-19 advantage. In the third quarter, Westwood went up by as many as eight points, and held the lead 34-29 going into the final frame.

Lady Indian Savanah Britton nailed a 3-ball to open up the fourth quarter. Aja Conrad added a freebie, and Cassidy Hammon dialed long distance to tie the game at 36-36 with 5:25 remaining. A minute later, Westwood regained the lead 37-36, and Happy Camp Coach John Kufner called time out. That’s when the Happy Camp crowd took control. (more…)

CORNING – The Yreka Miners boys varsity entered the NSCIF D-IV playoffs with a record of 5-17, including just two wins in the Northern Athletic League (2-8). Seeded eleventh, most felt that the Miners were just there to round out the brackets. The Miners had other plans.

First, Yreka knocked off sixth-seed Live Oak 65-43. Was it a fluke? The answer turns out to be “no.” Last night the Miners paid a visit to the third-seeded Corning Cardinals and left with a ticket to the semi-finals—winning 59-52. The Miners did what no team has done in Division-IV for as far back as the NSCIF archives reach (02-03).

Number-five Gridley and number-seven Colusa are the only other teams not seeded one through four to make it to the semifinals since the archives began. Both teams did it in the 2003-2004 season. However, only the Miners have reached the semifinals entirely on the road, and are the lowest seeded team to do it during that time span.

Following the Lady Miners win over Orland at Miner Gym, Miner players Jimmy Kutzer and Aaron Sinnott had an air of confidence about their game at Corning the next day. Kutzer was short of an outright prediction of victory, but told siskiyouyouth.com that they felt “strong and confident” that they could pull out the win. Sinnott agreed. They were right.

For the Miners, the game was won in the fourth quarter, when they outscored the Cardinals 24-13—including a pair of 3-balls by Brandon Meeks with Corning defenders in his face. The Miners were also hot at the free throw line hitting 8/10 in the final frame.

Jeremy Turner led the Miners with 15 points. Andrew Ward had 13, and Brandon Meeks put up 11 points-including three 3-pointers.

Following the game, Meeks told KSYC radio’s Mark McAllister that, “I practice my 3s a lot, just for that big moment.”

The Miners (7-17) will travel to second-seeded Sutter (18-6) on Wednesday, Feb. 27 for a semi-final match. Sutter defeated Orland 74-44 in round-two.

ANDERSON - Mt. Shasta’s Lady Bears flirted with an upset of top-seeded Anderson Thursday night, but came up two buckets short in their second-round NSCIF D IV playoff game, 37-33.

Things didn’t start well, as Anderson bolted out to a 10-0 lead in the first period. But, Bear senior Molly Abbott drained a 3-pointer that sparked a 9-0 run, making it a 1-point game going into the second period.

However, Anderson quickly pushed the lead back to double digits, and took a 24-15 lead into the locker room. Mt. Shasta came out strong in the third quarter, with a couple of quick buckets by Abbott, but were held scoreless in the final three minutes of the period, and trailed 31-21 going to the fourth.

The Bears continued to play aggressive defense, forcing the Cubs into turnovers and bad shots, but Anderson was doing the same thing to them at the other end of the floor. The game looked out of reach with 3:35 remaining, as Amrallina Rowland broke free for an easy bucket, and a 37-25 Anderson lead.

But, Mt. Shasta had one last run in them, ripping off eight straight points over the next 2:25, to make it a 4-point game with 50 seconds remaining. (more…)
