Etna
REDDING – The Etna Lions went 2-2 in the Grey Division pool, of the Shasta Lake Bass Easter Baseball Classic, over the last three days. On Thursday the Lions lost the final game of pool play to the D-I Lassen Grizzlies, 3-2. For the second straight game, the Lions lost in their opponent’s last at bat. Lassen went undefeated in the Grey Division. Etna will play for third place at the Easter Classic, on Friday. Opponent and time are to be determined.
In game one of pool play on Tuesday, the Lions made short work of the University Prep Panthers. Etna scored in each of the first four innings, putting up two in the first, three in the second, one in the third, and four in the fourth. The Panthers scored a run in the fourth, to make the final 10-1.
Lion Logan Dysert went 3-4, with a run, two RBI, and a steal. Dysert was also the starting and winning pitcher. Greg Monday was 2-4, with three runs, two RBI, a double, and two steals. Trevor Kendrick went 2-4, with a run scored.
In the second game, the Lions took on the West Valley Eagles, and won 7-5. The Lions held a 7-0 lead after five innings due to a seven run fourth inning, which included a grand slam dinger from Taylor Pehle-Munson, hitting in the nine-spot. Lion starting pitcher Clint Johnson was relieved at the start of the sixth inning and moved to shortstop, when the game seemed to be in hand. Johnson, however, would have to retake the mound in the seventh inning, with the score 7-5. Johnson came into a bases-loaded, two-out situation and struck out the Eagle batter to preserve the win. Mt. Shasta
REDDING – The Mt. Shasta Bears notched a win today in their second game of the Easter Classic Baseball tournament held at Big League Dreams, beating the Wheatland Pirates 6-5, in dramatic fashion.
The Bears put a pair of runs on the board in the first inning courtesy of a couple of walks, a couple of steals, and a couple of Pirate errors. Wheatland used a hit, a steal, and a passed ball to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Bears after one full inning.
All three Bear batters struck out in the top of the second inning—two swinging, and one looking. Wheatland looked like they might start to run away with the game in the bottom half of the inning, when they barely broke a sweat to put up four runs, and take the lead 5-2.
Mt. Shasta, however, wasn’t quite ready to barbeque. After the first batter struck out leading off the top of the third, back-to-back doubles by Erik Acord and Erik Thelander made it 5-3. In the bottom half of the inning, Bear pitcher Colin Waterman began taking control, mowing down the first two batters via the strikeout. (more…)

Rodeo
By Sarah Loogman
Lacy Hanna, senior at Etna High School, can always be found busy whether it’s working on her family ranch, creating decorations for her school’s homecoming dance, or announcing upcoming FFA events on the radio. But to see her in one of her biggest passions, you can find Lacy in the rodeo arena.
“I love it, I love everything about it,” said Lacy. “Rodeo has taught me everything—how to make friends, how to take care of myself, and how to take on so much responsibility.”
Riding on a horse for the very first time when she was 28-days-old, Lacy has practically grown up in a saddle. Living her whole life in Scott Valley and being the third generation in the area, Lacy’s whole heart and life lies with the rural country lifestyle. But, being in a relaxing community doesn’t mean she doesn’t get involved.
“I love being involved in everything,” said Lacy. “I like to organize and plan and be a leader.”
A leader she has most definitely proven to be. Lacy has been in her high school student council for two years, and is currently the dance commissioner and senior class representative. She also is very involved with the FFA program as a reporter. As a part of her responsibilities, Lacy writes press releases on FFA events, keeps up on their newsletters and calendars, as well as reporting over the air on events including those of the Spanish Club and rodeo. For the past few years, Lacy has also raised both steer and heifers for the Siskiyou Golden Fair. On her family ranch, Lacy helps out by changing the pipes, feeding and working the cattle. (more…)

WEED – The subject is passive solar power, but Weed High School shop teacher Damon Zeller and his construction class students aren’t passive about learning. They could have learned from a book, but instead Zeller and science teacher Mike Gilmore secured a grant from British Petroleum to build model houses, and study how differing amounts of windows and insulation, as well as orientation to the sun affect the temperature in the various house designs.
“The project was all about looking at how passive solar energy, the sun’s energy, could be warming your house. We have six model houses, and in each one of those models there’s something different,” said Zeller. “Some have double insulation. Some have no insulation, or one layer of insulation. Some have two windows, and some have five windows. Some are oriented towards the north, and some are oriented towards the south. We are looking at how all of that affects the temperature in the houses.”
What Zeller and his students discovered was that if you have more windows on a house and a southern exposure it’s going to heat up more. If oriented towards the north with no sunlight coming into the house, the house stays much cooler. (more…)

MOUNT SHASTA – A much improved Mt. Shasta Lady Bears team hosted the Etna Lady Lions yesterday in double-header action for both teams’ Shasta Cascade League opener. Etna took game-one 7-4, in eight innings, and also won game-two 8-4. Etna had pounded Mt. Shasta 16-9, less than a week earlier in the season.
Beth Langford reached on an error to lead off the game, for Etna, but was caught stealing on a throw by Lady Bear catcher Emma Taylor. Ashley Parry singled and stole second with one out, but the Lady Lions were unable to bring her home. Valerie Hougan singled to open the bottom half, for Mt. Shasta, but was called out for removing her helmet on the field of play. The game was scoreless after one inning.
Etna had their lead off hitter on base again in the second inning, when Nicole Luiz walked. Elli Pynes singled, and Luiz moved to second. A passed ball allowed Luiz to advance to third, and Pynes to second. Paige Finley struck out, but a dropped third strike required a throw to first base, allowing Luiz to score from third and Pynes to move to third. Kacey Munson then singled to drive in Pynes and give Etna a 2-0 lead. Finely whiffed the first two Lady Bear batters in the bottom of the inning, and Mt. Shasta went down in order.
With one out in the top of the third inning, Etna’s Tracy Thackeray doubled. Chloe Papazian also doubled, and Thackeray moved to third base. Luiz picked up an infield hit, and an RBI, scoring Thackeray from third, to give Etna a 3-0 advantage.
