SHASTA LAKE – The first time the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears and the Central Valley Falcons met, it was all Bears in an 8-1 win. The double-header rematch was just the opposite, with CV winning both games easily.

In game one, CV plastered five runs on the board in the bottom half of the first inning to lead 5-0. Both teams scored a run in the second inning making it 6-1. The Lady Bears added a run in the top of the fifth to narrow the gap to 6-2. But those were the last runs of the game for Mt. Shasta, while CV added three more in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 9-2.

Sammy Reed was 1/3, with a double and a run for the Bears. Emma Taylor went 2/3, and Jackie Degray was 1/3 with a double. Lauren McCurrey pitched all six innings, giving up nine runs, three earned runs, nine hits and two walks.

The Falcons exploded for 10 runs in the first inning of game two, but didn’t tally a run again, until the bottom of the sixth inning. Mt. Shasta scored all three of their runs in the top of the fifth, for a final score of 11-3. (more…)

YREKA – The Yreka Lady Miners split a double-header with the Mazama Vikings today. Yreka won game-one 4-1, and dropped game-two 4-3 in 10 innings.

After Mazama went down in order, Kaitlin Weckerle led off the bottom of the first inning in game-one, with a slap bunt single for Yreka. Alyssa Scala followed with a single, and Weckerle went to second base. Sara Jones grounded out, but Weckerle and Scala each moved up a base. Weckerle then scored on a wild pitch to give the Lady Miners the lead 1-0, after one inning.

Neither team scored in the second or third innings. Jones led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a base hit. Jones stole second and third. With one down, Ashlie Smith ripped a double to drive in Jones and make the score 2-0. Robin Lemos knocked in Smith with a single, and it was 3-0, after four innings.

There was no scoring in the fifth inning, but Mazama managed a run in the top of the sixth, to make it 3-1. After the first two Yreka batters grounded out in the bottom of the sixth, Smith hammered her second double of the game. Again, it was Lemos driving Smith home with a single, to put the Lady Miners up 4-1 going into the final frame. (more…)

YREKA – They’ve met three times in the last five days, and the Yreka Miners have beaten the Mt. Shasta Bears all three times—twice at the Marble Mountain Tournament last weekend, and again today.

Each team scored a run in the first inning. Neither team scored in the second and third innings. Although pitching well, Yreka’s Wade Berryhill was relieved by Andrew Ward in the fourth inning.

The Bears took the lead in the top of the fourth, 2-1, when Andrew Campbell stole third base, and then scored on a throwing error. The Bears scored another run in the fifth inning to make it 3-1. Yreka answered with a run in the bottom half to cut the Bears’ lead to one run, at 3-2.

Miner Ethan Garrett relieved Ward in the sixth inning and shut down the Bears. Yreka started the bottom of the sixth inning with a fly out. However, the second batter, Ward, singled. Berryhill then doubled Ward home to tie the game 3-3. Berryhill stole third and then scored on a pass ball to give Yreka the lead 4-3. The next batter, Jake Havey, was hit by a pitch, and Matt Houston came in to relieve Dallas Brooks for the Bears. (more…)

The Etna Lady Lions went 5-1 at the Anderson Cub Classic to finish in third place, last Friday and Saturday. Etna won their pool by going 3-0 on day-one, with wins over Quincy, 5-3, Trinity, 10-7, and Orland 12-1.

Against Quincy, Lady Lion Chloe Papazian led the way, going 2/3, with a double, and an RBI. Kacey Munson had an RBI and a run, and went 1/2. Elli Pynes had a pair of steals and a run, going 1/3. Paige Finley started, went three innings and got the win on the mound (ER, 3H, 2K, BB). Ashley Page made a relief appearance, going three innings (2ER, 3H, 4K, BB, HB). (more…)

REDDING – The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears earned a one-seed for the elimination rounds of the NorCal shootout at Big League Dreams in Redding, last Friday and Saturday.
The Bears opened pool play on Friday with an 8-4 loss to University Prep. Lady Bear Amber Butts went 2-for-4, with a triple, a run, and an RBI. Amanda Woods was the starting pitcher and took the loss, giving up eight runs, two earned runs, and six hits over six innings.
Then, the resilient Lady Bears came back with strong wins over Central Valley 8-1, and Princeton 10-0 to win their pool. In the Central Valley game, Bella Campbell led the Lady Bears’ offense, going 2-for-2, with two runs, and two RBI. Sammy Reed was 2-for-2, with two runs, and an RBI. Tori Weatherford drove in two runs, scored a run, and went 2-for-3.Valerie Hougan was 1-for-3, with two RBI. Lauren McCurrey got the start and complete game win on the mound, going five innings, giving up one earned run, and six hits.
Against Princeton, Butts was 2-for-4, with three RBI, and a run. Weatherford went 1-for-2, with two runs, and two RBI. Hougan was 2-for-2, and scored twice. Woods recorded the complete game win, going five innings and giving up six hits and no runs. She fanned six.
On Saturday morning, the Bears seemed destined to advance, when they held a 7-2 lead over Portola in the top of the fourth inning. Portola, however, had their sights set on advancement, and came back to tie the game 7-7 in the bottom half of the inning. (more…)

Rebecca Geries takes Gold, Jon Villani gets Bronze

Mt. Shasta High School graduate Rebecca Geries is the National Collegiate Champion in Women’s Giant Slalom snowboard racing. Geries finished first in both of her runs, with a first run time of 1:12.96, the fastest run of the competition. Her second run was 1:26.19, for a combined total of 2:39.15, nearly 11 seconds faster than the second place finisher.

On the men’s side, Etna High School graduate Jon Villani picked up a Bronze medal in snowboard Giant Slalom. Villani had the second best time of the first run, at 1:08.78. His second run was 1:16.99, for a combined total of 2:25.77. The winning time was 2:20.31.

Geries and Villani both compete for the College of the Siskiyous. The United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard National Championships were held at Sunday River, Maine, with the GS snowboard races taking place on Saturday, March 8.

ETNA – A pair of wins over Mt. Shasta, a pounding of Hoopa Valley, and a loss to West Valley added up to a 3-1 record for the Yreka Miners at the Marble Mountain Tournament.

The Miners finished out the tournament with a 9-6 win over the Mt. Shasta Bears, on Saturday. Mt. Shasta went out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, one in the second, and one in the third to go up 5-0.

Yreka responded with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to make it 5-4. Two Miner runs in the fourth inning gave Yreka the lead 6-5. The Bears tied it in the top of the fifth inning, 6-6, but Yreka put up three runs in the bottom half to win 9-6. (more…)

ROCKLIN – The College of the Siskiyous Lady Eagles basketball team defeated third seeded Sierra (26-6), 56-54, last night in the second round of the North Regional for the California Community College Women’s Basketball State Championships. The win propels the Lady Eagles (25-6) into the state championship round-of-eight.

COS advanced to the second round by defeating Solano 72-59 at home, in round one. Crissy Watts led the Eagles with 18 point—including four 3-balls, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Kristi Arness had 13 points—with three 3-pointers, and 3 steals. Karlee Myers put up 12 points and pulled down 8 boards. Amanda Harris scored 11 points, and had 4 helpers. Allyson West had a strong all-around game with 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks, and a pair of steals.

The Lady Eagles will be playing Mt. Sac on Thursday, March 13, at the University of the Pacific, at 1:00 pm.

FORT JONES – Clint Johnson gave up one hit through four innings, and the Etna Lion bats pounded out 14 runs to beat the Trinity Wolves 14-2. The win made the Lions 4-1 in the Marble Mountain Tournament and secured third place.

The Lions pounced on the Wolves right from the start, posting four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Etna added two runs in the second, and exploded for seven runs in the third inning. A run in the fourth inning brought the lions to their final total of 14.

Trinity sat on a goose egg until the top of the fifth inning, when a combination of two walks, three errors and a Wolf hit put two runs across the plate to make the final 14-2.

Greg Monday continued to crank out the hits, going 3-for-3, with four runs, three steals, an RBI, and was hit by a pitch. Logan Dysert was 3-for-4, with three runs, two steals and an RBI. Jordan Pehle-Munson went 2-for-3, with two RBI, and a run. Clint Johnson was 1-for-3, with a run and an RBI, as well as being hit by a pitch. (more…)

FORT JONES – The Mt. Shasta Bears had a rough start to the Marble Mountain Baseball Tournament. The Bears dropped the frigid morning opener to the Yreka Miners 2-1.

Mt. Shasta’s Erik Acord went 2-for-3, with a run and two steals. Andrew Campbell was 1-for-2, and Trent Hough was 1-for-3.

Ethan Garrett led the Miners, going 1-3, and scoring both Miner runs.

For the Bears, game two certainly wasn’t any better, as they lost to West Valley 8-2.

West Valley scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth. Mt. Shasta managed to get on the board in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs, but the game was called on time limit.

Campbell went 2-for-3 for the Bears, with a double, and a run. Acord was 1-for-3, with a run and a steal. Erik Thelander went 1-for-3, with an RBI. Kevin Cole was 1-for-3.

The Bears and the Miners hooked up again on Saturday, with the Miners prevailing 9-6.
