WEED – The College of the Siskiyous Lady Eagles swept Feather River in their final GVC double-header of the season, 8-0, and 11-5, last Friday. COS also swept the Golden Valley Conference, going 20-0 (47-3). COS is ranked second in the state, and first in the northern region.

In game-one against Feather River, the Lady Eagles wasted no time in lighting up the scoreboard. Crislyn Chewning led off with a triple down the right field line. Then, with one out, Ali Paz blasted a 2-run dinger, to put COS up 2-0. Two batters later, Katie Zauner went yard to make it 3-0.

Neither team scored for the next three innings, until COS added three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Nikki Kemper was hit by a pitch to lead off. Kemper moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Laura Thorp. Chewning drove in Kemper, to make it 4-0, with a single. Chewning stole second base, and moved to third on a fly out to right field. Ali Paz singled, driving in Chewning to increase the lead to 5-0. Paz scored on a double by Zwetschke, giving COS a 6-0 lead after five innings. (more…)

ALTURAS – A week after being swept by Fall River, the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears pulled off a sweet sweep of the Modoc Lady Braves, on their turf. Modoc had occupied the second spot in the Shasta Cascade League Standings. That spot now belongs to the Lady Bears.

In game-one, Mt. Shasta went into the bottom of the second inning with a 1-0 lead, from a run in the first inning. But, before the first Modoc batter of the inning stepped up to the plate, the Lady Bears lost their ace pitcher, Lauren McCurrey, to a pulled thigh muscle, during warm up pitches. Coach Greg Eastman went to the bench and called on Amanda Woods to get the job done. She did.

Woods and the Lady Bears gave up one run in the bottom of the second, to make the score 1-1, but Modoc would not score again until the bottom of the sixth inning.

Mt. Shasta regained the lead in the top of the third inning, with a pair of runs, to lead 3-1. Another Lady Bear run in the fourth made it 4-1. The Lady Braves added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, making the final 4-2.

For the Lady Bears, Sammy Reed went 3-4. Valerie Hougan was 2-4, with a pair of runs. Bella Campbell scored a run, going 1-4. Cynthia Laiacona walked and scored a run. Woods was the winning pitcher (6IP, 2R, 3H, BB, 2K). McCurrey pitched the first inning and gave up no runs, two hits, and no walks. (more…)

WEED – When the COS Eagles baseball squad took the field in their retro uniforms, you had a feeling that they were going to play well against the rival Shasta Knights. The Eagles donned the powder blue uniforms as part of a day honoring former COS coach Dennis DeRoss, and his 1984 team that won the Golden Valley Conference, and finished as the state runner-up.

DeRoss tossed the first pitch, but it was Shasta who stole the show early. The Knights Erik Larsen opened up the game with a walk, and moved to second on a ground out. Etna High graduate Robbie Brown singled, scoring Larsen. Brown swiped second and third base. The next Knight struck out, but Curtis Crosby reached on an error and advanced to second. Brown scored to make it 2-0 for Shasta. The Knights scored again in the inning to make it 3-0. COS went down 1-2-3 in their half of the first inning.

Shasta had a pair of base runners in the second inning, but failed to score. Billy Deaton, Justin Anderson, and Derrick Hemmele all came up with two-out singles to load the bases, but COS was unable to push a run across the plate. (more…)

BURNEY – The Etna Lady Lions figured that the Shasta Cascade League Championship would come down to the final double-header of the season against the Modoc Lady Braves. As it turned out, Etna’s split with the Burney Lady Raiders, last Friday, combined with Mt. Shasta’s sweep of Modoc delivered the Lady Lions’ SCL championship earlier than expected.

Etna won the first game of the double-header against Burney 12-7. Etna scored three runs in the top of the first inning and four more in the third inning to lead 7-0. Burney put up a run in the bottom of the third, making it 7-1. Etna added three runs in the fourth to up their advantage to 10-1. Both teams scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning to make the score 12 – 3 going into the final frame. Burney rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the effort came up well short, as the Lady Lions took the contest 12-7. (more…)

YREKA – The Yreka Lady Miners evened their Northern Athletic League record at 2-2, with a 9-5 win over the Central Valley Lady Falcons, last Friday.

The Lady Falcons put up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, and Yreka scored a single run in the bottom half, to give CV its only lead of the game. The Lady Miners tied the score with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Then, Yreka scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take the lead 4-2.

The Lady Falcons drew even at 4-4, with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the Lady Miners regained the lead with a run in their half of the inning, 5-4. Yreka broke the game open in the sixth inning with four runs, to lead 9-4. CV added a single run in the top of the seventh, making the final 9-5.

Sara Jones led the Yreka offense with a perfect day at the plate, going 3-3, with a run, an RBI, two doubles, and a walk. Ashlie Smith and Amber Sinnott were also perfect with the bat. Smith went 4-4, with a run and a steal. Sinnott was 3-3, with a run and two steals. Alyssa Scala, Brie Phillips, and Stephanie Leyva all went 2-4. Phillips and Leyva each scored two runs, and had a steal a piece. Scala scored a run and had a steal.

Kayla Graves went the distance for the win (7IP, 5R, 11H, 0BB, 2K).

The Lady Miners (10-12) visit the Corning Cardinals (2-1, 15-11) on Tuesday, April 22 for another NAL contest.

ETNA – It was the double-header that Etna Lady Lion fans had been pointing to all season—two games against perennial Shasta Cascade League powerhouse, the Fall River Lady Bulldogs. Some observers said that it would be the end of the Lady Lions championship run. They were wrong. (more…)

McArthur – The young Mt. Shasta Lady Bears have been making progress throughout the season towards being an SCL force. However, as often happens with young teams, there are numerous ups and downs along the journey. Last Friday’s double-header against the Fall River Bulldogs was one of those down turns.

In game-one, the Lady Bears put up a run in the top of the first inning, and added three more in the second inning to lead the Bulldogs 4-0. Then came one of those innings ball clubs like to forget. Fall River scored five runs, none of them earned, to take the lead 5-4. The Lady Bulldogs added two more unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, to win 7-4.

“(In) the first game, Lauren (McCurrey) pitched her best effort ever, giving up five hits and no earned runs. We let her down in the second inning on three consecutive errors,” said Mt. Shasta Coach Greg Eastman.

Offensively for the Lady Bears, Amber Butts went 1-3, with two runs, and a walk. Valerie Hougan and Donetta Young each went 1-3, and scored a run a piece. McCurrey started, pitched all six innings, and was tagged with the loss (7R, 0ER, 5H, BB, 4K).

In game-two, the Lady Bears again jumped to an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Fall River put a single run on the board in both the first and second innings. Going into the bottom of the third inning, Mt. Shasta led 3-2, but Fall River scored three runs to take the lead 5-3. The Lady Bears answered back in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 5-5. (more…)

ETNA – The Etna Lions baseball squad started the day tied with the Burney Raiders for the Shasta Cascade League lead, at 5-1. By the end of their double-header with the Fall River Bulldogs, on Tuesday, Etna had slipped into a tie for second place with Trinity, at 6-2. Fall River won the first game 10-5. The Lions bounced back to win game-two in nine innings, 4-3.

After a poor performance in game-one, the Lions came roaring back in game-two. Both teams had a base runner in each of the first three innings, but were unable to score. After retiring the Bulldogs in order in the top of the fourth inning, including two strikeouts by Lion pitcher Logan Dysert, Etna broke the ice in the bottom half. (more…)

McArthur – After dropping the first game of the double-header to the Fall River Bulldogs, 7-0, the Mt. Shasta Bears rebounded to take game-two 6-4. The Bears baseball squad stays at the .500 mark in the Shasta Cascade League at 4-4 (8-10). Mt. Shasta is in fourth place, ahead of Fall River (3-3), and trailing third place Trinity (6-2). Etna and Burney sit on top of the SCL at 5-1.

In game-one, the Bulldogs scored three runs in the second inning, two in the third inning, and another two runs in the fifth inning.

For the Bears, Trent Hough went 2-2. Erik Acord and Andrew Campbell were each 1-2, with a walk. Dallas Brooks was 1-3. Colin Waterman started on the hill and took the loss (5IP, 7R, 5H, 7BB, 2K). (more…)

The College of the Siskiyous Lady Eagles grabbed a share of the top ranking in the state of California, after recording wins over Yuba, Shasta, and Butte, last week. COS is currently tied with Cypress (40-1) for the top spot, with 150 points, and six first place votes a piece. (more…)
