sarah-loogman-etna-scl-championships-text-slide-sized.jpg WEED – The Shasta Cascade League held its championships on Thursday at the College of the Siskiyous. Both Mt. Shasta and Etna had strong showings.

Royce Autry dominated for the Mt. Shasta boys, winning the 100 m (11.2), and 200 m (23.52) dashes. Autry also won the long jump (20’5”.00), and joined teammates Randy Rutherford, Brenden Hickey and Austin Herrick for a win in the 4×100 relay (46.55). Maggie Strong led the Mt. Shasta girls with wins in the 400m (1:05.81, 800 m (2:26.69), and 1600 m (5:45.70).

coffee-break-generic-ad-4.jpgFor Etna, freshman Emily Loogman, won the 100 m (13.56) and 110 high hurdles (17.18). Morgan Moran took the 200 m (28.62) and the high jump (4’10”). Sarah Loogman set a new SCL pole vault record at 9’10,” which is also the best in the North Section for 2008. The Loogman sisters and Moran were joined by Teri Szczepanek for a win in the 4×100 relay (54.05). Szczepanek also won the 300 m low hurdles.

yreka-corning-loren-young-text-sized.jpgYREKA – The Yreka Lady Miners (6-4, 14-14) closed out their Northern Athletic League season with a make up game win over the Corning Lady Cardinals 7-3, on Thursday. The outcome of the game will likely have significant NSCIF D-IV playoff implications.

Corning (5-5, 19-15) came into the week ranked third in playoff points, Yreka was ranked fifth, with Willows (16-11) ranked fourth. Willows won its last game, Corning split in its last two games, and Yreka won its final two games. By NSCIF rule, since Yreka finished higher than Corning in league, Yreka must be seeded above Corning. That likely means, based on section actions in the past, that Willows will move to a three-seed, Yreka would be fourth, and Corning will drop to fifth. There is also an outside chance that Yreka may move to a three-seed, depending on the final strength of schedule rankings. Then again, the selection committee, which meets on Saturday, May 10, is far from predictable.

northerncapaving-225.jpgAlthough playing at home, Yreka was the visiting team in its game against Corning. Earlier in the season, umpires did not show up for a scheduled game in Corning, leading to Corning playing a make up game in Yreka, where the Cardinals were the “home” team. Of course, the crowd thought otherwise.

With one down in the top of the first, Kaitlin Weckerle reached on an error for the Lady Miners. Sara Jones followed with a single, and Weckerle went to third. Both Lady Miners scored on a single by Ashlie Smith, to put Yreka up 2-0. (more…)

2008-may-3-dist-1-awards-rodeo-084.jpgYREKA – At the final District-1 California High School Rodeo Association rodeo of the year, last Saturday, 31 seniors were honored with scholarships—including the naming of the Ryan Clarke Memorial Sportsmanship awards.

The Ryan Clarke Memorial Sportsmanship award has been given since 1987 in memory of a small boy who loved cowboys and planned to be one when he grew up, but was killed in a tragic ranch accident. The 2008 honorees were Katy Fitzgerald of Litchfield, and Chad Bushnell from Red Bluff. The winners were chosen by their fellow rodeo competitors. (more…)

SUSANVILLE – The amazing Yreka Miners may have not only staked a claim to a share of the Northern Athletic League baseball title, they may have won it outright. An 8-2 win over the Lassen Grizzlies, last Friday, assured the Miners of at least a share of the crown. However, the Central Valley Falcons, who are currently tied with the Miners, may have used an illegal player in their game against Corning.

bookstore-text-click-sized-may.jpgAccording to Yreka coach Jason Freitas, the North Section has ruled that CV will have to forfeit the Corning game, which would give Yreka an outright title. It would also mean a three-seed in the playoffs. CV has appealed the decision, and a final determination will be made on Tuesday, May 6.

Against Lassen, Yreka put up a run in the top of the first inning, two in the third, and five in the fourth, to lead 8-0. Lassen scored both of their runs in the bottom of the sixth. (more…)

cos-san-mateo-cheyanna-ohlrich-text-sized.JPGWEED – The College of the Siskiyous Lady Eagles swept a pesky San Mateo softball squad to advance to round-two of the state playoffs. The Eagles won game-one 7-6, on Saturday, and game-two, 10-2, on Sunday.

Game-two was scoreless through the first two and a half innings, before COS got the offense cranked up in the bottom of the third inning.

Laura Thorp led of with a single. Ali Paz ripped a double and Thorp moved to third base. With Lady Eagles on second and third, and no outs, San Mateo brought in a relief pitcher to face Stephanie Zwetschke. Zwetschke hit a two-RBI single to put COS up 2-0. Zwetschke advanced all the way to third base, on a Katie Zauner base hit. Zwetschke and Zauner scored when Cheyanna Ohlrich singled, making it 4-0. Next up was Courtney Wooden, who launched a two-run big fly, giving the Lady Eagles a 6-0 lead after three innings. (more…)

ETNA – After getting off to a hot start, the Etna Lions Baseball team was having a late season melt down, losing three in a row, and four of their last five games. That may have changed last Friday, when they pounded Modoc (4-8, 5-15) in a double header, 16-1, and 9-2.

valleytire-generic-sized.jpgThe Lions wasted no time in putting away game-one. Etna scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and seven more in the second to go up 16-0. Modoc’s lone run came in the top of the third inning, making the final 16-1.

Logan Dysert and Clint Johnson both went yard. Dysert was 3-3, with two runs, three RBI, and a walk. Johnson went 2-3, with two runs, two RBI, and a walk. Beau Branson was 2-3, with a run, a double, and a walk. Greg Monday scored three times, and went 2-3. Trevor Eastlick went 1-4, scored a run, and knocked in three. Jordan Pehle-Munson was 1-4, with 2 runs, two RBI, and a double. (more…)
