gg-check-donation-001.JPGYREKA - Jeff Bourke of G&G Ace Hardware in Yreka donated $1,000 to the Siskiyou Golden Fair to help with the replacement of two livestock scale meters that were stolen in a fairgrounds robbery on July 8. One meter was part of a $5,000 beef/sheep scale project donated to the fair by the 10th District Junior Livestock Auction Committee, a nonprofit organization staffed by volunteers. The other meter for the hog scale was purchased by the fair. The scales are used strictly for the junior livestock program. The total value of the loss was $2,000.

etna-v-ball-camp-16-front-b.JPGETNA – Your volleyball team has a strong season, with a Shasta Cascade League co-championship. What do you do during the summer? For varsity coach Kayla Nadig and JV coach Linda Berry, the answer is bring down Adam Wagman and Molly Grossmann from Ashland, OR, and put on a camp for your team.

Wagman is the coach of mOcean, a club team based in Ashland, and an assistant coach at Southern Oregon University. Grossmann was a setter on the SOU Lady Raiders volleyball team and also coaches mOcean, with Wagman.

sis-dist-ad-2.jpgWagman and Grossmann came in contact with the Etna staff through Lady Lion volleyball standout Claire Pynes and her father, Scott. Pynes plays for Wagman on the mOcean team.

Seventeen Lady Lions and prospective Lady Lions are participating in the camp, which runs for three days, 5 ½ hours a day. Players range from incoming freshman to seniors. (more…)

xtremely-amped-sized.jpgYREKA - The thrill of motorcycle stunts combined with the energy of live rock and roll music will be coming to the 2008 Siskiyou Golden Fair. PremierWest Bank will be presenting Xtremely Amped on Friday night, August 8, beginning at 8:00 pm.

Xtremely Amped is the ultimate combination of high voltage rock and high flying stunts. Live bands are constantly pumping out rock favorites that combine with the adrenaline rush of pro-level freestyle motocross riders to morph into Xtremely Amped.

“We are thrilled to be bringing this unique show to the fair this year,” said CEO Rebecca Desmond. “It is going to be one exciting night!”

Some of the country’s top motocross stunt riders will be performing to the sound of live music interspersed with some great variety entertainment. No show like this has ever been seen at the Siskiyou Golden Fair.
Xtremely Amped will appear in the Scott Valley Bank northerncapaving-225.jpgGrandstand, with tickets priced at $15 for box seats, $12 for reserved grandstand and $10 for general admission. General admission tickets will not go on sale until the other tickets are sold out, or the day-of-show.

lions-all-star-7-front-b.JPGOROVILLE – The South All Stars won the 31st Lions All Star football game, 27-19, last Saturday, but local gridiron stars did their part for the North.

Yreka’s Jeremy Tuner picked off a pass and nearly returned it for a TD. The North eventually capitalized on the turnover by finding the end zone.

“That pick felt good, almost taking it back, and putting us in a position to score,” said Turner.

As a linebacker, Turner led the Yreka Miners and the Northern Athletic League in tackles last season, and was fifth in the Northern Section (170). Turner will be playing at Azusa Pacific University this fall, and enjoyed his taste of college rules at the Lions’ game.

mittan-ad-2.jpg“The overall experience was a blast. Hanging out and getting to know some of the guys I have been competing against for the last four years was one of the highlights. Getting to play on the same side is something I won’t forget,” said Turner. “The game was physical and hard fought. With such a short amount of time to prepare, I thought it was a real competitive match up. Playing college length quarters and rules gave me a feel of what to expect.” (more…)

dallas-brooks-usa.jpgLake Shastina – Dallas Brooks, a recent graduate of Mt. Shasta High School, is headed to Australia to play baseball with the USA Athletes International team (USAAI). To say he’s excited might be one of the world’s greatest understatements.

“Never would I have thought that I, Dallas Brooks from Mt. Shasta, would be going to Australia to play baseball. I was in complete shock. I mean here I am a kid from a small town thinking I’d never get recognized,” said Brooks. “I was actually in the Seattle Airport headed to Barrow, Alaska to visit my dad  (When he learned of his selection). I was going up there to get away. I was having a rough time, and I just wanted to take a breather so it couldn’t have come at a better time for me. I honestly wanted to cry because I was so happy.”

Brooks first came to the attention of USAAI while he was attending the Top 96 Program, a baseball camp held at Sonoma State. He was selected to play on the team by Jon Martin, the head baseball coach at Vassar College. Brooks leaves Monday for Brisbane, Australia to play at the Gold Coast U18 Baseball Tournament. Then, he’ll fly to Cairns, Australia to play some more ball.

coffe-break-revised.jpgBrooks, who played catcher and pitched at Mt. Shasta High, is the son of Brenda DellaBona and Jim Brooks. He currently resides in Lake Shastina. This fall, Brooks will attend Shasta College, where he will play baseball, and begin working towards a degree in Sports Medicine—an education that he hopes will lead to a career as a sports trainer or physical therapist. Of course, he is hoping that the sports medicine careers might be a bit delayed by reaching his baseball goals. (more…)
