MOUNT SHASTA – The Mt. Shasta Bears soccer team improved to 3-1 in the Shasta Cascade League with a 5-0 win over the Trinity Wolves, last Thursday.

John Holst curved in a corner kick at the 22-minute mark to give the Bears the 1-0 lead. (more…)

etna-v-chester-paula-6-front.jpgCHESTER – A short-handed Etna Lions varsity football team made the long trek to Chester, and came back with a 36-14 win over the Volcanoes.

The Lions racked up over 400 yards in offense (262 rush, 144 pass), and the defense was, as always, solid.

Brothers Alex and Lucas Case proved to be a nearly unstoppable tandem in the back field. Sophomore Lucas Case rushed for 152 yards on 18 carries, and scored a TD. Senior Alex went 65 yards on 19 carries, and registered three TDs.

valley-tire-red-c.jpgQuarterback Jordan Pehle-Munson was 9/15 for 144 yards, and rushed for a TD. Seth Jordan led the Lions’ receivers with four catches for 86 yards. Taylor Pehle-Munson pulled in two passes for 40 yards, and Ryan Hicks had two receptions for 29 yards.

The Lions were playing with seven seniors missing, including five starters, due to disciplinary reasons.

Two of the missing starters were from the offensive line, which hurt the Lions in the first half. However, Etna was able to make adjustments in the second half. According to head coach Ken Dysert, there was a “night and day” difference between the first and second halves for the O-line. (more…)

dunsmuir-cory-knowles.jpgLOYALTON – The Dunsmuir Tigers amassed 608 yards of offense on the way to a crushing 68-0 win over the Loyalton Grizzlies. Dunsmuir scored 32 points in the first quarter, 16 in the second, six in third, and 14 in the fourth quarter.

Cory Knowles accounted for 247 yards—169 rushing and 78 receiving, while scoring three touchdowns and a 2-point conversion.

Nate Gonzlaes also scored three TDs, rushing for 87 yards, and sis-dist-ad-2.jpglogging 30 yards in receiving. Gonzales also had a 2-point conversion.

LT Hisey scored two TDs and a 2-point conversion on 50 yards of rushing. Hisey also passed for 111 yards, and a TD.

Colton Sordahl racked up 108 rushing yards and a TD. Sordahl also had two 2-point conversions. (more…)

cos-v-shasta-neal.jpgWEED – The College of the Siskiyous Eagles scored two touchdowns in the last 2:10 of the game in an attempt to stage a miracle comeback against the Shasta Knights—a comeback that fell one onside kick recovery short. Despite the late fireworks, the Eagles dropped their third straight game.

Eagle QB Aqura Brown threw two TD passes, one each to Darius Davis and Anthony Young. Raymond Neal rushed for two TDs.

The Knights pooched their opening kick off, and COS inexplicably watched the ball bounce around its own 30-yard-line. Shasta recovered and moved the ball to the coffe-break-revised.jpgEagle 5-yard-line, where the COS defense stiffened and forced Shasta to settle for a field goal.

On their second possession, the Knights moved the ball from their own 49 to the COS 17. The Eagle defense came up with another stop when Steven Butrick recovered a fumble.

The Eagles took over on their own 15. Eagle quarterback Aqura Brown and Darius Davis hooked up three times for 51 yards of an 85-yard drive scoring drive, capped off by a 13-yard TD run by Raymond Neal. Brown picked up the 2-point conversion on a keeper, giving COS an 8-3 lead, with 2:41 left in the first quarter. (more…)

etna-v-weed-soccer-front.jpgFORT JONES – On paper, the soccer match between the Weed Cougars and the Etna Lions looked like it should have been a blowout win for Weed. Weed, arguably the best team in the county this season, had knocked off Tulelake, Mt. Shasta and Butte Valley. Etna has one win.

Etna put their emphasis on defense in the first half, with three of their top four players at the defender position. The strategy worked for the first 24 minutes of the match, until Weed’s Jose Luquin blasted a shot through the hands of Etna’s goalkeeper. Luquin’s tally wound up being the only score of the match.

Etna shifted gears in the second half changing their bookstore-text-click-sized-september.jpgalignment to a more offensive mode. About eight minutes into the second half, it looked like Etna’s strategy might backfire, when Omar Fernandez rang a shot off the post.

The Lions were able to generate offensive pressure in the second stanza, with their best opportunity coming with 17 minutes played. With the Cougar goalkeeper caught out of the net, Lion Juan Castaneda took a shot that appeared destined to find the back of the net. Cougar fullback Ruben Ducoing, however, had his keeper’s back and made the save with a diving header. Etna had other chances, as did the Cougars, but neither team managed to score the rest of the way, and Weed held on to win, 1-0. (more…)

taylor-and-jordan.jpgBy Sarah Loogman

It’s all in the family when it comes to football for the Pehle-Munson twins. Taylor and Jordan, seniors at Etna High School, follow a family legacy as the fourth and fifth brothers of their family to play Lions’ football. With Jordan as the starting varsity quarterback and Taylor as a hard-hitting outside linebacker, the two make an impressive pair on Friday night’s field.

y-ad-1.jpg“Sometimes it gets a little frustrating,” admits Jordan to playing on-field with his twin. “But the good thing about it is that we kind of know how each other are thinking.”

“I guess we kind of have that twin connection thing,” said Taylor.

Football and family have always been in sync for these brothers. Starting in grade school, Taylor and Jordan share memories of backyard football with older brothers Jared, Kyle, and Ryan. But the fun isn’t limited to just football. A big time hobby revolves a lot around hunting and fishing, too. (more…)

etna-v-fall-river-1-front-b.jpgMcArthur – Last year’s Shasta Cascade League co-champions, the Etna Lady Lions and Fall River Lady Bulldogs, squared off in both team’s SCL opener, on Tuesday. Early in game one, it appeared that that the match would be a battle befitting defending champions, but it quickly turned in Fall River’s favor, with the Bulldogs taking the match 3-0.

Etna jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game-one, behind a pair of kills from Claire Pynes and an ace by Annaleisa Nadig. The Bulldogs came back to tie the score at 4-4, and the teams exchanged short lived leads, until the squads were tied at 6-6. Then, Fall River went on a 15-4 run to go up 21-10. The Bull Dogs went on to win 25-15.

Etna started strong in game-two, leading most of the game up to a score of 18-15. But again, the Bulldogs went on a big run, 10-0, to win 25-18.

clarity.jpgIt was Fall River that started quick in game-three, leading by as many as three points. However, the Lady Lions fought back to tie the game at 14-14, on a Nadig ace. The Lions went up 16-15 on a kill by Pynes, and again 17-16 on a Nadig kill. Fall River, once again, made a run, 8-1, to take a 24-18 lead. Etna climbed back to within three points, on two kills and a block by Pynes, but the Bulldogs got the final point to win 25-21. (more…)
