coffe-break-revised.jpgThe Mt. Shasta Lady Bears played almost well enough to sweep their volleyball match against U-Prep. Instead they lost all three games by the narrowest of margins (24-26, 23-25, 25-27), last Thursday.

“All three were good games. We just could not put them away. We had the lead several times. Like in game-2, we were 16-16 when they went ahead 22-17. Taylor Hansen served to 23-22, and then we lost 25-23,” said Lady Bear Coach Greta Jones. “Amanda Amesbury had a great match with 10 kills on the night. Hollie Acord did a good job setting and serving.” (more…)

Big Valley may have come to Dunsmuir expecting to easily hand the Tigers their first loss of the season. When the Tigers fumbled on their own 30-yard-line, and Big Valley scored three plays later, it looked like it was going to be a long night for Dunsmuir.

But the Tigers moved the ball down the field and Nate Gonzales scored on a 2-yard keeper. The 2-point conversion was denied.

northerncapaving-250.jpgDunsmuir stuffed the Cardinals at their own 30-yard- line on the kick off, and held the Cardinals to a three-and-out. DHS senior Cory Knowles took the BV punt back 28 yards but a penalty kept it to a gain of only 18. Gonzales had his apparent second TD called back due to a penalty. The Tigers then turned over the ball on downs.

The Tigers defense picked up a Cardinals fumble but the Tigers were unable to move the ball. BV wasted no time in scoring with a 65-yard pass. The 2-point conversion was no good. With 2:00 min remaining in the first quarter, it was Big Valley leading 14-6. (more…)

etna-v-tulelake-paula-11-front.jpgTULELAKE – The Etna Lions rebounded from a tough overtime loss to Bonanza the previous game by thrashing the Tulelake Honkers 41 -22, last Friday.

Etna’s six touchdowns came from brothers Alex and Lucas Case, Taylor Pehle-Munson, Travis Whittaker, Devin Franco and Andrew Peluso.

Head Coach Ken Dysert saw considerable improvement in his offense over the previous week.

“From the week before where we had probably our worst valley-tire-red-c.jpgoffensive game since I’ve been there, as far as execution, to one of the better ones. It all came down to confidence from the quarterback. Execution was like night and day from the week before,” said Dysert.

Dysert was also pleased with the way his defense played, as was Defensive Coordinator Greg Hanna.

“First-team-D played really well, and we got an opportunity to get a lot of guys in on defense,” said Hanna. “Lucas Case has been playing unbelievable. Alex Case is a rock. Alex is the heart and soul of our defense.” (more…)

cos-v-butte-front.jpgOpinion
By Ray Wolf

There’s no doubt about it. Butte College has a great football team. The Roadrunners are fast, strong, intense and execute most of their plays to perfection. When it comes to being disciplined in carrying out their football assignments they perform extremely well.

Normally, I’d be writing about the football aspect of the game between the Butte College Roadrunners and the College of the Siskiyous Eagles, last Saturday. Instead, I find myself writing an opinion piece, but I suppose I should write a little about the football part.

Except for a few nice pass plays by the Eagles, Butte dominated nearly every part of the game, and beat COS 53-25. There, that about covers it. Check the end of the story for who scored for COS. Now, here’s the real story.

wbs-web-generic.jpgAlthough the Roadrunners put 53 points on the board, when it came to sportsmanship and class, they laid a giant goose egg—as in zip, zilch, nada.

It’s one thing to be a little cocky, and maybe even arrogant. After all, this is football—intense, tough, and at times down right mean. It’s played by tough young men that are hyper-jacked up for the game, and every play within the game. It’s not unusual to hear players talking smack to each other, especially when you get beyond the high school level. (more…)

yreka-v-mt-shasta-var-23-front.jpgJV squads tie 20-20

YREKA – Every football team wants to spoil another team’s homecoming. The JV Bears nearly played spoiler, coming within an extra point of beating the JV Miners. Early in the varsity contest, it appeared that Mt. Shasta’s upper class men might just pull off an upset.

On Mt. Shasta’s second play from scrimmage, Royce Autry sprinted 60 yards for a TD. The PAT was blocked, but the Bears had the start they needed. Mt. Shasta’s sideline was jumping with optimism and fire.

Late in the first quarter, the Miners set up shop on their own 25-yard-line, following a Bear punt. On the first play sis-dist-ad-2.jpgof the possession, Miner running back Kurt Lorenzini blasted through the Bear defense, shedding tacklers, before breaking into the clear and going 75 yards for the TD. Yreka failed to convert the PAT, leaving the score tied at the end of the first quarter.

Yreka struck again just over a minute into the second quarter. This time, after a Bear punt, the Miners started at their own 40. Again, it took just one play to score, with Manny Barragan sprinting 60 yards to pay dirt. QB Joe Wilson picked up the 2-point conversion on a keeper, to give the Miners a 14-6 lead. (more…)
