Siskiyou Youth and PremierWest Bank are sponsoring the 2008 Basketball Challenge for all varsity basketball teams that Siskiyou Youth covers: Yreka, Mt. Shasta, Etna, Weed, Dunsmuir, and Happy Camp. The winning team’s players and coaching staff will receive custom made “Team of the Year” T-shirts designed by Golden Grotto.

The winner of the challenge will be the girls or boys team that is most successful during the 2008-09 season, which is defined as the team that advances the furthest in the North Section CIF playoffs. The challenge will end at the finish of the section playoffs and does not include any state playoff games because Division-VI teams (Dunsmuir and Happy Camp) are not eligible for state playoffs. WEED – The College of the Siskiyous Lady Eagles hoops team outplayed the Yuba 49ers in the first half of Wednesday’s contest. In the second half, COS blew Yuba off the court, holding the 49ers scoreless for over 10 minutes.

Jasmine “Jazzy” McDaniels started COS on the way to victory, scoring the first four points of the game. Crissy Watts dialed long distance to increase the lead to 7-0. Watts would nail four 3-balls in the first half and a total of six in the contest.

Yuba worked its way back to take a 10-9 lead with about seven minutes gone in the first half. The game remained close until near the midway point of the opening stanza, when COS began to take control, partly due to an increase in defensive pressure.

With the game tied 14-14, Jennifer Whipple put COS on top 16-14. Watts hit a 3-pointer, making it 19-14. Watts then dished to Stephanie Batchelder for a bucket, increasing the lead to 21-14. Leah Swain made it 23-14 on a put back.

The 49ers came back to narrow the margin to a bucket at 27-25, but COS responded by outscoring Yuba 18-9 the remainder of the half. (more…)

Sherri Hanna, Student Activities Director at Etna High School, has announced a special Fund Raiser for injured Mt. Shasta High Schoolfootball player, Corben Brooks.

“Etna High School Student Council is sponsoring a Dodgeball Tournament to be held on Saturday, January 17, 2009 in Etna. There will be categories for all ages and we welcome all of Siskiyou County to participate,” said Hanna.

Any net proceeds from this tournament will be donated to the Corben Brooks Fund to help with his recovery from injuries sustained during the football scrimmage at the beginning of the 2008 season. The Etna Lions and other Siskiyou County teams were present at the time of his injury.

Each dodgeball team will have six members and the tournament will follow the National Amateur Dodgeball Association rules. Entry fee for each team will be $30 so get your friends together and join the fun. There will be Trophies for all categories and prizes for the best team uniforms. Food booths will be available.

While Claire Pynes’ picture makes her look more like a snowboarder than a volleyball player, rest assured that her Impact Player Award is for her volleyball prowess.

Pynes, likely the best volleyball player in Siskiyou County, led the Etna Lady Lions in kills and digs, as well as being second in aces and blocks. But, what really sets her apart is her hitting accuracy, which was the best on the Etna team and 10^th in the section. Pynes also led the Lions in serves received and had the least errors.

Power, consistency, reliability and accuracy all lead up to an Impact Player Award for Claire Pynes. Congratulations.

The Impact Player Award is given on a monthly basis and goes to Siskiyou County high school athletes, male or female, that have had a significant impact on the success of their team. I select the players based on my own observations, often in consultation with the player’s coaches.

A total of four awards are given each month and are not school specific; they can go to a player at any school that Siskiyou Youth covers. Winners receive Impact T-shirts that were designed by Golden Grotto. The T-shirts and award are cosponsored by Siskiyou Youth and NorCal Classic Hits radio 102.3/101.7.

Yreka Miner Manny Barragan and Dunsmuir Lady Tiger Rose Spagnolo received Impact Player Awards earlier this month. That leaves one last award for November. And, it will be…?

WEED – The Chabot Lady Gladiators paid a visit to COS on Saturday, and used a long range attack to snag an 85-77 win. While the Lady Eagles had little problem scoring, they were unable to shut down Chabot’s Rose Thompson who went off with 34 points, mostly via the 3-ball.

The Gladiators opened the game with a 3-pointer and tallied a total of eight in the first half. With about 10:00 gone in the half, Chabot held a 12-point advantage 27-15.

Then, Lady Eagle Leah Swain hit a bucket to make it 27-17 and start a 13-1 run. Swain added another hoop. Jennifer Whipple nailed a 3-ball and picked up three the hard way. Kelly Stephens dialed long distance, and

Amber Franko had a put-back to give COS the lead30-28.

The Gladiators regained the lead on a 3-pointer. But with the score 38-38, Jazmin McDaniel hit a pair from the charity stripe, putting COS up 40-38. Two free throws by Whipple made it 42-38, and COS went into the half leading 42-40.

Crissy Watts dropped a bomb to open the second half, giving the Lady Eagles a 45-40 advantage. Chabot tied the game at 45-45, but Stephanie Batchelder notched a 3-pointer to give COS the lead back, 48-45. (more…)

ALTURAS – The Etna Lions football team’s dream of a section title ended on a cold Friday night against the Modoc Braves, 34-12. But, the Lions didn’t go quietly. Only Fall River gave the 11-0 Braves a significantly tougher battle this season.

The Braves had the ball first and it appeared that they might make quick work of the Lions. On the third play from scrimmage, the Braves struck with a 54-yard TD pass. Less than a minute into the contest, Modoc led 7-0.

The Lions, however, took the punch and threw a haymaker of their own. On a third-and-4 from its own 36-yard-line, Etna ran a reverse—or, so the Braves thought. Instead, wide-out Taylor Pehle-Munson pulled up and hit a wide open Seth Jordan for a 54-yard TD. The PAT was wide, leaving Modoc up 7-6.

Modoc responded with a 62-yard drive to regain the lead 14-6 on a 52-yard TD pass, with 7:43 left in the first quarter.

A strong return on the ensuing kickoff by T. Munson gave Etna good field position on its own 44.  Using a combination of runs and a pass, the Lions moved to the Modoc 37-yard-line. A 13 yard burst by Alex Case moved the ball to the 24. Runs by Lucas Case and Jordan Pehle Munson advanced the ball to the Modoc 16, where the Lions faced a third-and-2. The third down play lost two yards, and a fourth down passing attempt fell incomplete. Modoc took over on downs at its 18. (more…)

The Mt. Shasta Bears football team placed four players on the Sacramento Valley League All-League Team—running backs Miguel Rodriguez, Mark Maumasi and Royce Autry, as well as QB Steven Reed. Andre DeGray and Kenny Galten received Honorable Mentions.

Lady Bear libreo Andrea Martin was selected for the Shasta Cascade League All-League Volleyball Team, and Amanda Amesbury received an Honorable Mention.

The Weed Cougars football team placed two players on the SCL All-League Team—lineman Ty Andrews and lineman/linebacker Zack Vogel. Lineman Zack Schnack received an Honorable Mention.

The Lady Cougars volleyball team had no all-league selections, but Madison Moser and Sierra Skeen received Honorable Mentions.

Zack Morris of the Shasta Cascade League champion Mt. Shasta Bears grabbed Overall MVP honors. Weed’s Omar Fernandez is the Offensive MVP, and Pedro Aceves from Fall River was named Defensive MVP.

The Yreka Miners football teams held their awards banquet last Tuesday night. Running back Manny Barragan and defensive lineman Devin Howard were named All-League for the Northern Athletic League. Barragan led the NAL in rushing. Howard led the Miners in tackles, sacks, and fumble recoveries. Offensive lineman/linebacker Aaron Knapp received an honorable mention.

The NAL All-Scholastic Football Team includes Miners Brandon Larreau and Jon Nichols.
