MOUNT SHASTA – The Yreka Lady Miners rebounded from a 55-39 semi-final loss to eventual Holiday Tourney winner Central Valley, with a 64-41 thumping of the River Valley Falcons for third place. Yreka Coach Debbie Fogle made liberal use of her bench throughout the contest, with all players making a contribution.
Carrie Watson opened the game from long distance, giving the Lady Miners a 3-0 lead. River Valley came back with a pair of buckets to go up 4-3, but then Yreka went on one of its trademark runs, out scoring River Valley 13-3 the rest of the quarter to lead 16-7. Sara Cabitto, Marissa Allen, Katie Todd, and Adriana Scala all

scored during the run, with Ashley Lemos stroking a 3-ball.
The Lady Miners continued the run in the second quarter by scoring the first eight points, making the total run 21-3, and building their lead to 24-7. River Valley came back later in the quarter, but Yreka still led 31-19 at the half.

Etna
Okay, so this one is a little late being announced. Football season is over and we’ve moved on to basketball. However, sophomore Lucas Case made an impact on the Etna Lions varsity football team that will be remembered for quite some time.
Along with his brother Alex, Lucas gave the Etna Lions a potent running attack that helped them to their best record in several years at 8-4.
Case led the Lions in rushing with 837 yards (5th in SCL), averaging almost seven yards per carry. Case was also second on the team in sacks (3rd in SCL,
9th in section), and third in tackles. Along with the stats, when Case hits someone they stay hit, and that makes him an Impact Player Award winner.
The Impact Player Award is given on a monthly basis and goes to Siskiyou County high school athletes, male or female, that have had a significant impact on the success of their team. I select the players based on my own observations, often in consultation with the player’s coaches.
A total of four awards are given each month and are not school specific; they can go to a player at any school that Siskiyou Youth covers. Winners receive Impact T-shirts that were designed by Golden Grotto. The T-shirts and award are cosponsored by Siskiyou Youth and KWCH radio 102.3/101.7.

Yreka
YREKA – The Yreka Miners boys basketball teams may be stocking up on cans of Raid for the next time the Henley Hornets visit Miner Gym. Despite strong efforts by Gareth Watkins and Andrew Ward, the varsity fell 61-37. The JV and frosh squads had even rougher nights.
The Hornets doubled up Yreka’s varsity in the first quarter 18-9. The Miners, however, responded with a good effort in the second stanza.
Trailing 20-9, Cody Brooks hit a hoop to make it 20-11. A bucket by Ward made it 20-13. After Henley scored to go up 22-13, a steal and basket by Ward, and an inside power move by Watkins cut the deficit to 22-17. At the half, Yreka trailed 26-20.
The Hornets stung the Miners for nine straight points to open up the second half, building a 35-20 lead. Midway through the third quarter, Watkins took control of the offensive paint, scoring eight points for the Miners. But, the Miners had no answer for the Henley offense. Henley led 45-30 going into the final frame. The Hornets outscored Yreka 16-7 in the fourth quarter, to win 61-37.
Watkins recorded 17 points for the Miners, and Ward had 11. (more…)

MERRILL, Ore – It took overtime to do it, but the Etna Lions overcame a less than stellar start to beat the Lost River Raiders 60-57 last Monday night.
The Lions trailed 15-11 after the first quarter, and found themselves down by as many as 12 points, 30-18, in the second quarter. With the score 30-18, Ryan Hicks completed an old fashioned 3-point play to cut the deficit to 30-21. Brent Davis added a bucket just before half to make it 30-23 going into the intermission.
The Lions finally made their move about midway through the third quarter. With the score 36-25, Hicks hit back-to-back buckets, reducing the margin to seven
points, at 36-29. A hoop by Davis made it 37-31. Buckets by Hicks and Erik Anaya, brought the Lions to within four points, 35-39. A pair of freebies by Davis made it a 2-point game, 37-39. With five seconds left in the third quarter, Davis cut baseline and converted a pass from Anaya into a basket to tie the contest at 39-39.
A couple of hoops by Seth Jordan to start the final frame gave the Lions their first lead at 43-39. The Raiders regained the lead 45-43, but Anaya tied it at 45-45 off a dish from Jordan. Six points in a row from Davis made it a 6-point advantage for Etna, 51-45. (more…)

MERRILL, Ore – The Etna Lady Lions varsity and JV basketball teams invaded Lost River last Monday, and swept the Lady Raiders. The varsity won 44-27, and the JVs dominated 54-26.
After leading most of the first quarter, the varsity squad found themselves down 12-10 going into the second quarter. Paige Finley put the Lady Lions back on top early in the second quarter, 13-12, with a 3-point play the hard way. With Lost River leading 14-13, Trina Appler put Etna up 15-14 on a put back, starting a 14-4 Lady Lion run to finish the half. At the break, it was Etna 27 – Lost River 16.
Neither team exactly scorched the nets in the third

quarter, with the teams scoring a combined 11 points, leaving Etna up 33-21.
Early in the fourth quarter, Lindsay Stacher grabbed a rebound, and was fouled during the put back. Stacher hit the freebie to complete the 3-point play, making it 36-22. Then, Finley went coast-to-coast for an easy lay up, as part of a 7-1 run to begin the final frame. Etna went on to win 44-27.
Finley led the Lady Lions with 13 points. Sarah Loogman and Annalesia Nadig each had eight points.
Etna improved its record to 2-3. The Lady Lions travel to the Rogue River tourney this weekend. (more…)
