DUNSMUIR – The Dunsmuir Tigers took over sole possession of second place in the Evergreen League with a comeback win over the Big Valley Cardinals on Friday night, 65-62. The game came down to the wire, with Nate Gonzales hitting the game winner, and Matt Norton coming up with a swipe to seal the victory.
Big Valley had an early 6-0 lead. After a Dunsmuir time out, Gonzales hit a trey, and followed up with back-to-back deuces, giving the Tigers a 7-6 advantage. The Cardinals came right back with seven straight points to regain the lead 14-7. Then, the court tilted in the Tigers favor, as Dunsmuir ripped off seven in a row. Erin Kirch sandwiched put-backs around a Jake McIntyre freebie to make the score 14-12. A Matt Norton hoop tied the game 14-14 at the end of one quarter.
The Tigers opened the second quarter with a 9-2 run to lead 23-16 about three minutes into the quarter. McIntyre accounted for the first six Tiger points. Big Valley battled back to tie knot the score 29-29, with under a minute to go. A freebie by Zach Shirley gave the Tigers the lead going into the intermission, 30-29.
The Cardinals went up 33-30 early in the third quarter, before M. Norton tied it with a 3-ball, 33-33. Trailing 35-33, LT Hisey dialed long distance, putting Dunsmuir up 36-35. A bucket and then an old fashion 3-point play gave the lead back to Big Valley 40-36. (more…)

Dunsmuir
DUNSMUIR – If fans came to the Dunsmuir Lady Tigers versus Big Valley Lady Cardinals game expecting just a basketball game on Friday, they got a bonus—a little WWF style wrestling action. While the Lady Tigers attempted to play basketball, Big Valley employed a defensive strategy that seemed to rely on body blocks and two-handed pushes.
The Lady Tigers, however, were not intimidated. Instead, the Dunsmuir girls used basketball skills liberally sprinkled with grit to overcome the Cardinals 37-28.
At the end of a rough and tumble first quarter, the combatants were knotted at 4-4, with Dunsmuir’s points coming on hoops by Jamie Kirch and Jennifer Hope.
The Lady Tigers shut out the Cardinals in the second quarter, out scoring their adversary 8-0. Hope started the scoring with a freebie. Fesler hit a bucket to make it 7-4. Dunsmuir increased its lead to 9-4, when Hope hit Sadie Machamer on a nice back door cut. Another Felser basket and Hope free throw completed the scoring in the quarter, giving the Lady Tigers a 12-4 lead going into the locker room.
Dunsmuir opened up the second half scoring with free throws by Hope and Heather Coe to up its lead to 14-4. An intentional foul call against a Lady Cardinal for two-handing a Lady Tiger off the court, led to a pair of freebies by Hope, making the score 16-4. (more…)

Lady Eagles fall, 72-69
WEED – The COS Screamin’ Eagles rocked the house on Wednesday night, as they turned out the lights on the rival Shasta Knights. Among many highlights, Alden Gibbs put on a slam dunk show for the ages, with a little help from his friends. Gibbs had several jams during the contest, but none more exciting than the one that put the Eagles up 12-6.
Eagle teammate Brian Cummings received a pass too far under the basket to score. So, he flipped the ball back over his head to a high-flying Gibbs who, in one motion, hammered the rock home. The play electrified the crowd and set the tone for the rest of the game.
After Shasta scored, Eagle Andrew McNabb made it 14-8. An ally oop pass from Drew Herrera to Gibbs for another dunk, doubled up the score at 16-8. With the score 18-10, Jeff Williams dialed long distance, extending the lead to 11 points, 21-10. The remainder of the first half was played relatively evenly, and the Eagles went to the locker room with a 36-26 lead.
Dijon Edwards opened the scoring in the second half, giving the Eagles a 38-26 lead. With the score 40-28, the Knights made a run closing the margin to six points at 40-34. Gibbs ended the run with a 3-ball, and then a steal and dunk, upping the lead to 45-34. (more…)

YREKA – It took the Yreka Miners boys soccer team less than 20 minutes to score all the goals they needed last Tuesday to defeat the Central Valley Falcons. It took the Lady Miners less than a minute to score their game-winner.
Carlos Ontiveros notched the Yreka boys’ first goal three minutes into the match on a header. Ross Perry picked up the assist. Harry Rea-Downing made it 2-0 at the 15

minute mark. Three minutes later, Perry scored thegame-winner, making 3-0.
Other first half goals came from Patrick Erhard, Aiden McKee, and Rea-Downing (2).
Rea-Downing completed his hat trick in the second half and Ontiveros tallied his second goal to give Yreka an 8-0 lead. Central Valley scored both its cosmetic goals in the last four minutes of the match, to make the final 8-2.
The Miners improved to 4-2-1 in Northern Athletic league play and travel to Corning on Thursday.
One minute into the girls varsity match, Amber Fiock found the back of the net. It was the only goal the Lady Miners would need, but they tacked on nine more just to be sure. (more…)

WEED – It was everything you’d expect from a Mt. Shasta Bears versus Weed Cougars boys’ basketball game—tons of contact, athletic plays, and a battle to the end. On Tuesday night, it was the Bears that handled the Cougars 50-44 to remain in sole possession of first place in the Shasta Cascade League.
Mt. Shasta opened the game with back-to-back 3-balls from Zack Morris and Gene Kenyon to take a quick 6-1 lead. Weed’s Jake West played long-ball to make it a 6-4 game. J. West then dropped a dime to his big brother Robert West to tie the score at 6-6. Mt. Shasta responded with a 14-2 run to close out the first quarter, capped by a 2/3 court buzzer-beater by Miguel Rodriguez.
R. West broke the run with the first basket of the second frame, making the score 20-10. The Bears extended their lead to 24-10, before Tyler Wilson hit a 3-pointer for Weed to make it 24-13. Mt. Shasta pushed its lead to 16 points, 30-14, when Erik Thelander blocked a shot and then took it coast-to-coast for a lay up. At the intermission Mt. Shasta led 30-17.
Wilson nailed his second 3-pointer of the contest to open the scoring in the second half, cutting the Bears’ lead to 30-20. Trailing 35-26, R. West narrowed the gap to just six points, when he dialed long distance at the buzzer, making the score 35-29. (more…)

WEED – It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win for the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears over the Weed Lady Cougars on Tuesday night, 35-25. In a game where both the Bears and Cougars spent large amounts of time wandering aimlessly through the wilderness in search of points, Mt. Shasta found a strong fourth quarter, outscoring Weed 11-3.
At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Bears led 6-2 on a pair of buckets by Rachel Abbot and a hoop by Amanda Amesbury.
It took over two minutes for either squad to score in the second quarter. Weed’s Sierra Skeen was first to notch a basket to make the score 6-4. Lori Garcia tied it at 6-6.
Taylor Hansen put the Lady Bears back in front 8-6, but that was the last tally for Mt. Shasta until just before halftime.
Nicolette Neel nailed a 3-ball to give Weed its first lead, 9-8, half way through the second quarter. Amanda Greene followed with a basket, making it 11-8. A hoop by Neel and a 3-pointer from Skeen extended Weed’s lead to eight points, 16-8. Lady Bear Jaycee Sarti answered the call with a long distance bucket just before the buzzer, leaving Weed with a 16-11 lead.
Mt. Shasta battled back to tie the contest at 19-19 on a bucket by Jeana Michels three minutes into the third quarter. Neel put Weed back in front 21-19. Mt. Shasta tied it again on a nice up and under move by Donnetta Young. A freebie and a basket by Taylor Hansen gave the Lady Bears the advantage at 24-21. Going into the final frame, Mt. Shasta led 24-22. (more…)

One of the most important positions on a soccer field is the center-midfielder. The center-mid needs to be able to pass, shoot, and play defense, as well as act as a “quarterback” on the field. Great conditioning is a must.
Because of its importance to both defense and offense, the center-midfielder has a major impact on how a game is played and the success of the team. For the Yreka Miners, Ross Perry plays the center-midfield position.
In Northern Athletic League play, Perry leads the Miners in goals and is second in assists, as well as third in steals. Perry takes the majority of free kicks, and penalty kicks for the Miners.
Add it all up and it equals an Impact Player Award for Yreka Miner Ross Perry.
The Impact Player Award is given on a monthly basis and goes to Siskiyou County high school athletes, male or female, that have had a significant impact on the success of their team. I select the players based on my own observations, often in consultation with the player’s coaches.
A total of four awards are given each month and are not school specific; they can go to a player at any school that Siskiyou Youth covers. Winners receive Impact T-shirts that were designed by Golden Grotto. The T-shirts and award are cosponsored by Siskiyou Youth and NorCal Classic Hits radio 102.3/101.7.

Scott Valley JH is second, Sisson third
YREKA – The Jackson Street School Rams eighth graders won the Yreka Invitational basketball tournament last weekend with a 46-27 win over the Scott Valley Junior High Panthers. Sisson defeated Weed Elementary 46-25 for third place. Montague downed Big Springs, 32-29 in overtime, to finish fifth.
The Sisson cheerleaders took first place in the cheer competition. Matthew Morgan was the Hot Shot champion, and Cody Hoff took the 3-point shooting championship.
In the championship game between the Rams and Panthers, it was the Panthers that looked strong early in
the first quarter, jumping to a 7-1 lead. Ricky Reynolds opened the scoring. Then, Preston Munson scored on a reverse lay up, and nailed a 3-ball to make it 7-1.
The Rams responded when David Sellons made it 7-3 on a put back. Another bucket and a free throw by Sellons made it a one point game, 7-6. The Panthers went back up by four points, 11-7, but Michael Elfgen scored four points late in the first quarter to narrow the Panthers lead to 13-11. (more…)

MOUNT SHASTA – What a difference a week makes.
After playing one of their ugliest games of the season in a home loss to Burney, the Mt. Shasta varsity boys put the pedal to the metal against visiting Trinity Friday, cruising to an 83-69 win, and a spot atop the Shasta Cascade League.
The game was only close for about three minutes before Mt. Shasta (9-7, 4-1) erupted with an avalanche of offense. Gene Kenyon had eight first quarter points on the inside, while Jake Padula added eight more from the perimeter, allowing the Bears to bolt to a 26-13 lead after one period. (more…)
