HAPPY CAMP – In Evergreen League play, Tulelake traveled to Happy Camp on Friday to take on the Indians.  The varsity Lady Indians took an early lead and held it until the end. However, in the fourth quarter, the Honkers fought hard and narrowed the gap. Down by only four with seconds to go, a Lady Honker let loose a long three-ball, sinking it at the buzzer, leaving the Lady Indians with a narrow 52-51 victory.

Happy Camp had four players in double figures: Aja Conrad and Sammi Goodwin with 13, Kelsea McLeran 12, and Carly Hammon 11. (more…)

MOUNT SHASTA – Mt. Shasta coach Dan Hansen has been busy adding layers to his varsity girls’ defensive scheme. They’ve evidently been working on the offense, too.

The Lady Bears blew past visiting Trinity on Friday night, 54-45 for their third straight lopsided win.

“We played very well,” said Hansen. “We took control of it early, and dictated how the game was going to be played.”

Mt. Shasta scored off the opening tip on a lay up by Jeana Michaels, and then found the range from outside. Amanda Amesbury drained back-to-back 3’s as Mt. Shasta jumped to an 8-2 advantage. Jaycee Sarti and Taylor Hansen also connected on deep balls in the first quarter as Mt. Shasta pushed the lead to 19-11. (more…)

YREKA – On Tuesday, the Yreka boys and girls soccer teams went into Grizzly territory and escaped with a pair draws—good outcomes in a tough place to play.  On Thursday, the Lassen Grizzlies came to the Miners’ house and grabbed a pair of wins, beating the boys 3-2 and the girls 2-0.

In the boys match, Lassen struck first at the 15-minute mark, scoring on a breakaway that Yreka felt was offside.

Twenty-four minutes into the first half, Ross Perry knotted the score at 1-1, on a blast from about 25 yards out. Harry Rea-Downing had the assist. The score remained tied at the intermission.

Lassen went back on top, 2-1, fourteen minutes into the second half. With Yreka pressing for the tying tally, Lassen got behind the defense and scored to increase its lead to 3-1, with about three minutes to play.

The Miners refused to rollover. Instead, one minute after falling behind two scores, Jack Fletcher drove the ball to the back of the net off a Perry corner kick. The goal made it 3-2, with two minutes to go. The Miners were unable to get the tying score in the remaining two minutes. (more…)

The Happy Camp Indians varsity boys began their Evergreen League season with a home-court loss to Big Valley last Friday. The Indians came out strong and kept it close, but the Cardinals flew away with a 62-50 win. Kevin Harrison led the Indians with 21 points. Charlie Eastlick had a strong night dropping 17, and Sequoi Meyers added 10 points for Happy Camp.

The boys headed to Butte Valley on Tuesday to take on the Bulldogs for the third time. The two previous games were during the Bulldog Classic and were losses for the Indians. This would prove to be a repeat performance. The Indians put up a fight, trailing by only nine points at the half. Harrison again led the Indians with 16 points, and Craig Reece added 12. However, Happy Camp came out behind 39-61, suffering yet another loss to the Bulldogs. (more…)

WEED – The College of the Siskiyous has announced that the “Through the Looking Glass” and its National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families is now offering new scholarships specifically for high school seniors and college students who have parents with disabilities. These scholarships are part of the Through the Looking Glass’ new federal grant New National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families).

High School Seniors: to be eligible, a student must be a high school graduate (or graduating senior) by summer 2009, planning to attend a college fall 2009 and have at least one parent with a disability. Five separate $1,000 awards will be given out in fall 2009. Individuals may submit only one application per award period. (more…)

Junior Varsity falls 59-41

ETNA – Since the preseason the talk around the Shasta Cascade League has been that the boys’ varsity championship would be a 3-way race between Trinity, Mt. Shasta, and Weed, with Trinity being the favorite. Etna was rarely mentioned as a contender, but after Tuesday night’s 73-61 win over the Trinity Wolves, the Lions will surely be included in the conversation.

Trinity was first on the board, but a hoop by Brent Davis and back-to-back buckets by Clint Eastlick put the Lions up 6-2. Trinity was within a point, 8-7, when Erik Anaya scored in the paint. Then, Davis found Eastlick wide open under the basket. Eastlick had a cup of coffee, checked out his photos on SiskiyouYouth, measured the wind speed, and laid the ball up, with time to spare. The Wolves took the lead 13-12 with 44 seconds left in the quarter. However, Eastlick scored his eighth point of the opening frame to give Etna the lead back, 14-13, going into the second quarter.

Ryan Hicks got Etna started in the second frame, making it 16-13. With the score 21-17, Anaya hit a bucket and Davis followed with another to push the lead to eight points, 25-17. After Trinity scored, Anaya pulled out the spin move to make the score 27-19. Next, Hicks found Jarom Hiett on a cut to the basket and the Lions led by 10 points, 29-19. WEED – The College of the Siskiyous Foundation announced that scholarship applications for 2009/2010 are now available. Siskiyou County high school seniors who plan to attend COS during the 2009/2010 year are encouraged to apply for a Foundation Scholarship. In addition, a number of scholarships for continuing COS students are also available from the COS Foundation. (more…)

ETNA – The Trinity Lady Wolves walked into the Lions den Tuesday night on top of the Shasta Cascade League at 3-0. When the fur and dust settled, the SCL had a new leader, as the Etna Lady Lions took out the Wolf Pack in overtime 56-49.

In a prelude to the varsity contest, the Lady Lion JV squad had all they could handle from the Trinity JVs, but managed to preserve its unblemished record of 15-0, with a 59-56 overtime win.

The Lady Lions varsity led for first seven minutes of the opening quarter, until Trinity took a one point lead 11-10, with 55 ticks on the clock. It took Etna just 15 seconds to regain the advantage on a bucket by Lindsay Stacher, 12-11. Trinity went back in front, but Stacher scored again to give Etna a 14-13 lead after one quarter.

A basket by Stacher to open the scoring in the second quarter made it 16-13. The Lady Wolves came back to lead the game 19-17, with just over two minutes gone in the quarter. Etna tied the score, 19-19, on a put back by Ilima Adams. With Trinity leading 22-21, Etna ran off six straight points on a put back by Sarah Loogman, a bucket by Trina Appler, and a steal and score by Paige Finley, giving the Lady Lions a 27-22 lead. Trinity narrowed the gap to one point at 27-26, but a Loogman steal and assist led to a basket by Finley, increasing Etna’s lead to 29-26. The Wolf Pack hit a shot with 11 seconds left in the first half, leaving Etna with a 29-28 lead at the intermission. (more…)

ETNA – Since Mt. Shasta High School football player Corben Brooks was injured in a preseason scrimmage, several fund raising activities have taken place raising thousands of dollars to help Corben’s family offset his medical costs. Last Saturday, Etna High School found a unique way to help out—dodgeball.

Don’t laugh. The event raised about $1,000 and several welts.

The Etna High ASB and Co-Student Activities Directors Sherri Hanna and Rhonda Daws organized the dodgeball tournament, which drew 12 teams in two categories.

In the 14-29 division there were: The Under Cover Cannon Ball Chuckers, Schickalocka Laylies, The Wagon Burners, The Punishers, Los Novas Locos, and Good Life. The over 30 division featured: RB Aldrich Construction, State of Jefferson Border Patrol, “Y” Attack, The Slow Dodgers, The Tie Die Warriors, and Siskiyou Sheriffs. (more…)

WEED – The College of the Siskiyous Eagles are making a habit of beating the Lassen Cougars. They’ve done it three times this season, including Saturday night’s win, 87-84.

Eagle Alden Gibbs welcomed the Cougars with a gift from the land-of-three to start the scoring for COS, and give the Eagles the early lead, 3-2. Gibbs also gave Lassen a farewell present to finish the game.

With COS leading 85-84, Gibbs was intentionally fouled with two seconds remaining in the game. All Eagles but Gibbs dropped back, while he went to the line for two freebies. Gibbs missed the first shot, giving Lassen a chance for a miracle win.

In a play that seldom seems to work, Gibbs shot a line-drive off the front of the rim snagged the rebound and put it through the hoop to seal the Eagle win.

After the game Gibbs was asked if he had ever seen that play work.

“That’s my first time ever doing it. I just had to miss perfect so I could get the rebound because they thought I was going to shoot it regular. But, it came off just how I wanted it and I grabbed it and laid it up,” said Gibbs. “If I had made the first one, I would have made the second one. But because I missed the first one, I had to miss the second one so they couldn’t just throw up a ‘Hail Mary’ and win.” (more…)

WEED – Crissy Watts melted the net strings as she dropped 47 points for COS against the Lassen Lady Cougars. Watts’ performance eclipsed the COS single game scoring record of 44 points held by former Lady Eagles Karlee Myers (2008) and Kim Young (1983).

Unfortunately for COS, while Watts was melting net strings, the Lady Cougars were turning the net to vapor at the other end, raining flaming 3-balls, to win the game 94-87.

Watts opened the scoring, and baskets by Leah Swain and Jennifer Whipple gave COS the early lead 6-2. About five minutes into the contest the teams were knotted at 10-10. Four freebies by Jazmin McDaniel and a bucket by Amber Franko countered a hoop by Lassen, to give the Lady Eagles a 16-12 lead.

Midway through the first half, the Lady Cougars had an 18-16 advantage. Trailing 24-23, McDaniel added two more free throws to her total, putting COS up 25-24. Lassen responded with a 13-0 run to take a 37-25 lead, and appeared to be taking control of the game. (more…)

YREKA – The Yreka Lady Miners turned in a gritty performance against the Lassen Lady Grizzlies in their Northern Athletic League opener on Friday. The game began as a barn-burner with both teams on pace to reach 80-plus points. Just under halfway through the first quarter, the Miners held an 11-10 lead. The rapid pace did not continue, however, except for Lady Miner Carrie Watson who finished with 27 points.

With under a minute left in the first quarter and the score tied, 13-13, Lassen converted an old fashion 3-point play to take the lead 16-13.

After Lassen canned a 3-pointer to extend its lead to 19-13, Jaylene Phillips started Yreka on a 16-6 second quarter run. Back-to-back hoops by Watson tied the score at 19-19. The Grizzlies scored to regain the lead 21-19, but Ashley Lemos quickly tied it again, 21-21, at the 4:01 mark. Kayla Redman put the Lady Miners back on top 23-21, and Lemos pushed the advantage to 25-21. Watson converted a steal into two points, making the score 27-21. Phillips hit the last Yreka hoop of the half, and the Lady Miners went into the intermission up 29-22.

The Lady Miners started the second half with a save by Lemos to Phillips, who added another deuce to the total, giving Yreka a 31-22 lead. Lassen scored, making 31-24, but Watson nailed a 3-ball to make it a 10-point game, 34-24. Marissa Allen pushed the lead to 14 points, 36-24. (more…)

JVs fall 52-45

YREKA – Early in the first quarter, it didn’t look good for the Yreka frosh in their Northern Athletic League opener against the Lassen Grizzlies. Yreka trailed 8-1, and didn’t score until Danielle Deegan hit a free throw halfway through the quarter. The Lady Miners’ first field goal came with 36 seconds left. Yreka trailed 8-4 at the end of one, and 21-10 at the half. It was hard to imagine that the Lady Miners had much of a chance to win. They did.

Alexis Yaple-Whitten started the Lady Miners on the comeback path at the start of the fourth quarter. A put back by MacKenzie Allen cut the deficit to seven points at 21-14. Elizabeth Roy made it 21-16. A hoop by the Grizzlies gave them a 23-16 advantage halfway through the third quarter.

Krista Freeze hit a bucket, making the score 23-18. With Lassen leading 25-18, Allen made a sweet move in the post to bring Yreka back to within five points, 25-20. It was just the prelude to a huge fourth quarter by Allen. At the end of three, Lassen led 26-21.

A put back by Allen cut the margin to three points, 26-23, to begin the final frame. A technical foul against Lassen for throwing an elbow, led to a freebie by Kelsey Stonier that cut Lassen’s lead to one possession at 26-24. (more…)
