YREKA – The Yreka Miners had their chances against the Corning Cardinals on Friday, but were largely unable to execute with men in scoring position, resulting in a 6-1 loss.

mittan-ad-300.jpgThe Miners threatened in their first at bat, when they moved a man into scoring position with one out. After the Yreka leadoff batter hit a soft liner to second base for an out, Lane Wilson took a walk. A single by Zach Salvestro moved Wilson to second base, but the next two batters went down swinging to end the inning.

Joe Wilson reached on an error to start the second inning, but was erased when Devin Howard reached on a fielder’s choice. Howard stole second, but again the next two batters struck out, ending another Miner opportunity. (more…)

There are two rules that govern rounding first base. The first one applies in both softball and baseball. The second applies only in softball.

Softball & Baseball

A runner can over run 1st base in any direction. They can run and turn to the right, or into foul territory, or they can turn left and into fair territory. Once the runner turns, in order to be safe, they must return to 1st base almost immediately. It is the umpire’s judgment if the runner made an attempt to 2nd base. If in the umpire’s judgment the runner did make an attempt to go to 2nd, then they can be tagged out. If in the umpires judgment there was no attempt and they return to 1st base and are tagged in fair territory they are safe. Last weekend’s Gold Nugget Baseball tournament was hosted by the Yreka Miners. The top finishing local team was Yreka in fourth place. Etna came in sixth place and Mt. Shasta in eighth. Miner Kurt Lorenzini received All-Tourney honors, as well as Trevor Kendrick from Etna, and Colin Waterman from Mt. Shasta. The championship game between Central Valley and Klamath Union was delayed Saturday due to rainy weather. The game is set to be played on a later date.
Yreka coach Jason Freitas shared his thoughts on the tournament.
“I feel that as a baseball team we could have played a lot better. We seem to have one really bad inning and we are not able to rebound from it. I felt that the tournament went great except for not getting the championship game in. Having two teams from Oregon, one from the coast, and one from Oroville really gave the tournament some quality teams,” said Freitas. “I think the tournament took a huge step up from last year, and hopefully it keeps getting better.” (more…)

impact-weatherford-2.jpgSome players make an impact on offense, and some on defense. A few players make an impact on both offense and defense. Mt. Shasta Lady Bear catcher Tori Weatherford is one of those “few.”

The Lady Bears had a solid showing in the Lady Miner Softball Tourney last weekend, finishing third. Tori was one of their standout players, especially in the first two games.

In game-one against Corning, Tori did well with the bat, going 1/3 with a double, but her biggest impact on her team’s success came in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Mt. Shasta went into the inning up 3-1. Corning scored to make it 3-2, and had a runner on first with two outs. The runner attempted to steal second, but Tori came up firing to shortstop Donnetta Young for the tag to end the game. The play wasn’t even close.

In game-two, an 11-6 win over Yreka, Tori pulverized the ball. She went 3/3 with two homeruns and a double, driving in five runs and scoring a pair herself. (more…)

yreka-v-etna-lady-miner-tourney-front.jpgYREKA – The Yreka Lady Miners and the Etna Lady Lions met in a “win or go home” game last Saturday morning at the Third Annual Lady Miners Softball Tournament. When the dust settled, Yreka had advanced with a 4-1 win, and Etna was sent packing.

The two teams took different paths to the game. Yreka started the tournament with a 13-3 thumping of Hidden Valley in round one. The Lady Miners then fell to Mt. Shasta 11-6, sending them to the loser’s bracket.

bookstore-text-click-sized-march.jpgEtna started the tourney with a 3-1 loss to eventual champion Ashland. The Lady Lions rebounded with a 2-1 win over Fall River on Saturday morning, leading to the showdown with Yreka.

Yreka jumped on top in the bottom of the first inning against Etna. Adriana Scala led off with a single and moved to second base on a steal. Beth Franklin laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Scala to third. Carrie Watson took a walk. Both Scala and Watson eventually scored on wild pitches.

Etna struck in the top of the third inning. Danielle Hiett led off the inning with a walk, and moved to second on a sac bunt by Katie Eiler. Melissa Gentry ripped a triple to deep right field, driving in Hiett. Gentry was tagged out at home attempting to advance on an over throw. (more…)

mt-shasta-v-del-norte-front.jpgYREKA – The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears may have come into the Lady Miners softball tourney feeling like “canon fodder” for the big schools. They went home with a third place finish and two quality wins against larger schools, 3-2 over Corning and 11-6 over Yreka. The Lady Bears also picked up a pair of all-tournament selections, pitcher Kayla Spini and catcher Tori Weatherford

Mt. Shasta finished the tournament with a hard fought 2-1 loss to Del Norte in the semi-final game.

Del Norte struck first in the bottom of the third inning, to take a 1-0 lead, and picked up its second run in the fifth inning, extending the lead to 2-0.

coffee-break-b.jpgThe Lady Bears staged a two-out rally in the top of the sixth inning. Kayla Emerson started it with a single. Cynthia Laiacona tripled to right field, driving in Emerson, and narrowing the margin to 2-1. Emerson was stranded at third base.

Mt. Shasta received a gift from Del Norte to start the seventh inning, when Spini reached on an error. Natalie Hough pinch ran for Spini. Sammy Reed singled, moving Hough to second base, with no outs. Unfortunately for the Lady Bears the next three batters were retired via a strikeout, pop up and fly ball. (more…)

nsa-in-story.jpgYREKA – The Yreka Lady Miner JVs won the Yreka Junior Varsity tournament last weekend, going undefeated (5-0-1). The Lady Miners defeated Del Norte for the championship, 15-6. Yreka and Del Norte had tied in bracket play, 4-4, on Saturday morning.

The weather had been good for most of the tournament, but the cold and rain moved in for the championship game. However, that didn’t appear to affect Lady Miner pitcher Tiana Cruz, who struck out 12 batters
Rachel Luetke led the Yreka attack, going 3/5, with a double. Cruz was 2/3, with a triple. Makayla Lindley went, 2-4. Haley Weldon and Tailer Johnson each went 1/2. (more…)
