sis-dist-ad-300.jpgDUNSMUIR – The Dunsmuir Lady Tigers swept the Butte Valley Bulldogs in a double header on Wednesday, winning 17-7 and 14-8. Dunsmuir finished the season with a record of 6-4 in the Evergreen and 6-6 overall. The Lady Tigers were ranked sixth in NSCIF D-VI playoff points coming into the week.

It was Butte Valley that struck first in game-one of the twin bill. With one out, Tiffani Yeager was hit by a pitch. She then stole second base. A two-out single by Kady Porterfield drove in Yeager. Porterfield scored via a wild pitch and an error. Giving the Lady Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. (more…)

The Yreka Lady Miner JV squad fell to the West Valley Eagle JVs 1-0 on Tuesday. The Yreka defense was solid for most of the game. Unfortunately, for the Lady Miners, it was an error that led to the eventual winning run for West Valley.

“We lost a heartbreaker, but battled to the end,” said Yreka coach Rick Landrum.

Yreka pitcher Tianna Cruz tossed a no-hitter for the Miners and struck out 12 batters in the process.

“Tianna is just getting better and better with every outing on the mound,” said Landrum. (more…)

mt-shasta-v-fall-river-3-front.jpgMOUNT SHASTA – The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears swept the Fall River Bulldogs, 4-3 and 2-0, on Tuesday to ensure them of at least a share of the Shasta Cascade League softball championship.

Mt. Shasta pitcher Kayla Spini held court from the circle, while Tori Weatherford and Sammy Reed each picked up a game-winning RBI.

The Lady Bears sit on top of the SCL with a record of 9-1 with only a double header against Tulelake remaining. Etna is in second place at 7-3 with double-headers against Modoc and Weed left to play. Either a win by Mt. Shasta or a loss by Etna will give The Lady Bears the outright title. In any case, the worst Mt. Shasta can do is a tie for first place.

coffee-break-b.jpgThe Fall River Lady Bulldogs came out visibly fired up, and took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning of game-one. The Bulldogs converted a bloop double, a hit batter, a single, and a passed ball into the two runs.

It didn’t take Mt. Shasta long to answer. Kayla Emerson led off the bottom of the first inning with a base hit, and then stole second base. Emerson moved to third base on a wild pitch. With two outs, Tori Weatherford singled to drive in Emerson. Weatherford scored on a double by Kayla Spini to tie the game 2-2, after one full inning. (more…)

valley-tire-red-300.jpgETNA – The Etna Lion JV squad had a tough time against the JV Trinity Wolves last Saturday, dropping both games of a double-header, 10-6 and 16-4.

Etna started well in game-one, leading 1-0 after the first inning. Colby Rimmer reached on an error, and then stole second and third base. He scored on a botched pick off attempt.

Trinity, however, put up five runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead.

The Lions came up with a short answer in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs. Tristan Burns-Edel led off with a walk, and moved to second base on a wild pitch. With one out, Travis Parry singled, advancing Burns-Edel to third base. Parry stole second. Rimmer took a walk to load the bases. A single by Nick Hansen plated Burns-Edel and kept the bases loaded. Max Detrick took a walk, forcing in Parry. A double play ended the inning, with Etna trailing 5-3. (more…)

svpt-small.jpgETNA – The Etna Marble Mountain JV Classic softball tournament was short on teams after several cancellations, but not on excitement. After dropping their opening two games to the Trinity JVs (11-8) and the Big Valley varsity (17-2), the Lady Lion JVs beat the Trinity Wolves, 9-8, in the rematch to advance to the championship game.

Etna nearly blew an early 8-0 lead, but Allyson Fleener came through with a two-out, RBI single to drive in Teal Rimmer for the game-winner. Trinity had fought back to tie the game, 8-8, in the top of the sixth inning. (more…)

norcal.jpgYREKA – The Yreka Lady Miners pounded out an 8-3 win over the Corning Cardinals, last Friday—their second Northern Athletic League win. Yreka’s ace, Tianna Cruz struck out 15 batters, including the last five of the game to squash a Corning comeback attempt. Yreka led 8-0 after five innings.

“Our ace righty, Tianna Cruz, had her best game of the year,” said Coach Rick Landrum. Landrum also had high praise for his center fielder..

“Shastina Cloyd made an outstanding, running, shoestring catch in center field,” said Landrum.

The catch was the third out of the inning and saved multiple runs from scoring.

Haley Weldon and Cruz led the Yreka offensive attack. They each scored a pair of runs, went 2/3, and took a walk. Makayla Lindley was 2/4. Tailer Johnson went 1/3, with a double. Danci Burch walked and scored twice. Rachel Luetke and Alyssa Andrews both went 1/3.

With the win, the Lady Miner JVs improved to 12-9-2 overall this season. Yreka travels to Cottonwood to take on West Valley on Tuesday, April 28.

mt-shasta-v-trinity-softball-front.jpgMOUNT SHASTA – The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears softball team swept the Trinity Wolves in a double-header on Friday, winning 14-0 and 8-2. Combined with Fall River splitting a twin bill with Burney, the Lady Bears took sole possession of first place in the Shasta Cascade League, with a record of 9-1 (20-6). Fall River is in second at 8-2 (19-7), and Etna is in third place at 7-3 (22-7).

The Lady Bears can guarantee themselves at least a share of the SCL crown with a sweep of Fall River at home on Tuesday, April 28. Mt. Shasta and Fall River control their own destiny. If Fall River wins its last four games they would win the league. Etna must win its bookstore-text-click-april.jpgremaining four games, and hope for at least one loss by Fall River and two losses by Mt. Shasta in order to win the SCL title.

In game-one against Trinity, the Lady Bears plated their first seven batters, on the way to an 8-0 lead at the end of the first inning. Kayla Emerson led off with a walk. Makenzie Hanna bunted for a base hit moving Emerson to second. Cynthia Laiacona singled to load the bags. Tori Weatherford reached on an error by the Trinity center fielder, scoring Emerson and Hanna. Laiacona went to third on the play. (more…)

MOUNT SHASTA – The Mt. Shasta Bears didn’t have a problem getting runners on base against the Trinity Wolves. They did have a problem getting them across the plate, as the Bears dropped both games of a twin bill, 4-3 and 10-1.

Trinity jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game, but wouldn’t score again. As it turned out, the Wolves had all they needed.

Zack Morris smacked a two-run dinger in the bottom of the second inning, and the Bears added another run in the fourth to narrow the margin to a single run, 4-3. (more…)
