Etna
Etna Lion baseball player Jordan Pehle-Munson is having quite a season. The senior leads his team in batting average (.473), and is second in runs scored and RBI (twin brother Taylor is first in runs and RBI, and second in batting average).
A couple of weeks ago, Jordan found double-header perfection at the plate, going 8/8 against Burney. In the double header, he hit two triples and two doubles, drove in five runs, and scored three.
Jordan has also found a home on the hill for the Lions. After an injury to pitcher Taylor Pehle-Munson, Etna coach Collin Krueger decided to give Jordan a try. It seems to have turned out to be a smart move. Jordan is 2-0 in three appearances, with an ERA of 0.58. He has given up only one earned run, three hits and three walks, while striking out 15.
There’s no doubt about it. Jordan Pehle-Munson has had a positive impact on the success of his team, and that makes him an Impact Player Award winner.
The Impact Player Award is given on a monthly basis and goes to Siskiyou County high school athletes, male or female, that have had a significant impact on the success of their team. I select the players based on my own observations, often in consultation with the player’s coaches.
A total of four awards may be given each month and are not school specific; they can go to a player at any school that Siskiyou Youth covers. Winners receive Impact T-shirts that were designed by Golden Grotto. The T-shirts and award are cosponsored by Siskiyou Youth and NorCal Classic Hits radio 102.3/101.7.

WEED – Eagle third baseman Chris Houle rapped out six hits to lead the College of the Siskiyous Screamin’ Eagles to a 10-inning victory, 14-13, over the Shasta Knights on Wednesday afternoon.
Both squads scored early, late, and often, but it was COS that struck first. With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Eagle Kyle Conner reached on an error. Chris Houle ripped a triple to left-center plating Conner. As Houle rolled into third base (literally), the Shasta throw went awry, allowing Houle to score. COS held a 2-0 lead after one inning. YREKA – Miner pitcher Andrew Ward didn’t allow an earned run, struck out 10 Lassen Grizzly batters, and only gave up three hits and an intentional walk. However, Lassen took advantage of two Yreka errors and a couple of questionable calls to scratch out a 2-1 win over the Miners.
Lassen scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Lassen’s lead off batter hit a bloop single to right field, and then stole second base. Yreka retired the next two batters on a strikeout and a ground out. The Lassen runner advanced to third base on the ground out. The next Grizzly reached on an error, which also scored the run. It’s standard practice for high schools to require students to finish a senior project before they can graduate. The project a student chooses can cover just about anything imaginable, but generally has some value to the student’s future career plans, has a value to the community, or benefits the student’s personal growth. Tyler Moser, a student at Yreka High School, started with a senior project designed to help the youth group he belongs to, and wound up also helping another group of people in his community.
Moser’s original project was to do a fundraiser to help pay for members of the Decision Life Church 331 Youth Group to attend the Christian based DCLA Conference in Los Angeles this July. About 35,000 teens will attend the conference, which has the theme, “Be Love. Serve. Repeat.”
The fundraiser was based on collecting recyclables. Going door-to-door, Moser and other members of the group collected cans and bottles, which they brought to Yreka Transfer. Yreka Transfer kicked in an extra 10 cents per pound for the cans, and the group raised nearly $1000 for their trip.
Moser said that the motivation for his senior project was, “to give back to the youth group” that he has been a part of for three years.
During the collecting process, Moser’s mentor, Jamie Nowdesha, learned about how the collection of the pull tabs from the aluminum cans could benefit Siskiyou County residents that need dialysis.
“I went to the group and said, ‘Hey guys, let’s do this.’ They were totally for it, and just started ripping tabs. They were stoked,” said Nowdesha. (more…)

Yreka High School grad Robyn “Birdie” Lemos pitched a no-hitter for the Shasta College Lady Knights against the Redwood Corsairs last Saturday. Birdie struck out seven batters in the 3-0 win.
Birdie was still excited two days later, when SiskiyouYouth reached her by text message.
“It felt so great to be out there, and take it to ‘em. It was intense in the last innings, but I pulled through,” said Birdie. “It was very rewarding.”

Etna
ETNA – The Burney Raiders may have had visions of plunder when they rolled into Etna last Friday. What they got was a ride home with a pair of losses. Etna took game-one 6-1 and game-two 11-1.
Burney scored in the top of the first inning of game-one, but wouldn’t score again until the fifth inning of game-two. Etna took the lead in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs. The Lions added a run in the third, two in the fifth, and a run in the sixth inning, to win 6-1.
Jordan Pehle-Munson went 3/3, scoring two runs, driving in a run, and hit a double and a triple. He also had a steal. Trevor Kendrick went 1/3, with two RBI, a double, and a steal. Robbie Munson was 1/3, scored a run, drove in a run, and took a walk. Jon Erickson took a couple of strolls, scored a run and had a pair of swipes. Seth Jordan went 1/3. Clint Eastlick registered the complete game win, giving up one earned run, two hits, and a walk, while fanning 11.
Etna also scored two runs in the first inning of game-two. Hank Johnson led off with a single, and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Erickson. J. Munson plated Johnson with a base hit. J. Munson moved to third on a single by Kendrick, and scored on a hit by Taylor Pehle-Munson, giving Etna a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, Erickson reached second on an error, with two outs. J. Munson knocked in Erickson with a base hit, making the score 3-0. (more…)

ETNA – The Etna Lady Lions shut down the Burney Raiders in game-one of their double-header on Friday, winning 3-0. A ragged game-two went Burney’s way 11-7 in eight innings.
Etna took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in game-one, when Tandy Thackeray drove in Paige Finley.
The Lady Lions added two more runs in the third inning. Andrea Pearson walked with one out. Finley reached on a fielder’s choice that erased Pearson at second base. Finley stole second base, and scored on a single by Thackeray, who advanced to second base on the throw home. A double by Kassie Federico plated Thackeray, giving Etna a 3-0 lead after three full innings.
Burney’s biggest threat came in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, a Lady Raider reached on a bunt single. The Raider advanced to second on a steal and third on a wild pitch. However, a throw to Etna third basemen Ilima Adams by catcher Tessa Burrone caught the Raider runner off guard. After a brief run down, the Raider was tagged out by Burrone at home.
Burney also had a runner in scoring position in the seventh inning, when a Raider doubled with two outs. The next batter, however, grounded out to the pitcher to end the game. (more…)
