nsa-in-story.jpgCOTTONWOOD – Etna senior Sarah Loogman won the North Section Pole Vault championship with a height of 10-00.00, holding off challenges from three competitors with marks of 9-06.00—including third place finisher, Kelsey Robberson from Yreka.

Several other Siskiyou County athletes were at the championships held at West Valley High School on Friday. Yreka Lady Miner senior Carrie Turner was second in both the Long Jump (16-05.00) and Triple Jump (33-08.75). Junior Kevin Jorgensen finished second in the 800m (1:59.85) and the 1600m (4:28.94). heat-u-14-v-phoenix-front-450.jpgYREKA – The Siskiyou Heat U-14 ASA softball team took down the visiting Phoenix Lady Pirates in both games of a twin bill on Saturday, 12-2 and 10-6.

The Heat established its dominance in the bottom of the first inning of game-one, with an eight-run out burst. Lacie Landrum, Emilie Wagy, Katie Brummett, Baylee Harris, Morgan Deany, and Riva Martin all scored, with lead-off hitter Jena Turner crossing the plate twice in the inning.

Phoenix responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, but that would be the extent of their counter attack. The Heat added four runs in the fourth inning to extend its lead to 12-2. The Heat shut down the Pirates in the top of the fifth inning, leading to a 10-run mercy rule win.

Landrum led the Heat at the plate in game-one, going 3/3 and scoring two runs. Turner was 2/3, scored two runs, and hit a double. Wagy and Brummett both had two walks and scored a pair of runs, while going 1/2. Martin picked up the win in the circle.

yac-300-b.jpgThe Heat quickly took control again in game-two, scoring six runs in the first inning for a 6-0 lead.  Going into the top of the sixth inning, the Heat led 9-2.

The Lady Prates, however, weren’t quite ready to abandon ship, as they put up four runs to cut the lead to 9-6. Heat relief pitcher Krystal Palmer entered the circle in the sixth to stop the Pirate rally. (more…)

impact-e-loogman.jpgThe Etna Lady Lions varsity track and field team won both the Shasta Cascade League and the Division-III championships this season. One of the big reasons for the team’s success is sophomore speedster Emily Loogman.

At the SCL championships, Loogman won all four of her events—100m, 400m, 800m, and 100m Hurdles. The 400m, 800m, and 110m Hurdles weren’t even close, with Loogman winning all of them by well over two seconds.

Loogman opted out of the 100m at the D-III championships, but smoked the field in the 800m and 100m Hurdles. Loogman also won the 400m, holding of a tough challenge by Mt. Shasta’s Callie Toews.

y-ad-1-click.jpgLoogman has the fourth fastest 100m Hurdles time in the North Section this season at 16.64. Her best 400m and 800m times are in the top-10 in the section.

In addition to track, Loogman also played on Etna’s varsity volleyball team, and was a standout player on Etna’s JV basketball squad.

The Impact Player Award is given on a monthly basis and goes to Siskiyou County high school athletes, male or female, that have had a significant impact on the success of their team. I select the players based on my own observations, often in consultation with the player’s coaches. (more…)

WEED – Take the Shasta Cascade League, add in a few more schools for the North Section CIF D-III track and field championships, and the team champions are the same as the SCL championships. The Etna Lady Lions and Mt. Shasta Bear boys took first place again. The D-III junior varsity team results also matched the SCL championships, with Weed winning the boys, and Trinity taking the girls championship.

The Lady Lions were led by Emily Loogman, who won the 400m (1:02.44), 800m (2:32.65), and 100m Hurdles (16.64). Loogman, the SCL champion in the 100m, chose to scratch in that race to concentrate on wining the 800m. (more…)

spini-impact.jpgMt. Shasta Lady Bear freshman Kayla Spini is known for two types of impact—the impact of her pitches hitting catcher Tori Weatherford’s glove, and the impact of her bat hitting the ball.

Spini helped lead her Lady Bear team to the Shasta Cascade League championship and NSCIF D-IV runner up. Her record in the circle was 24-5, with an SCL leading ERA of 1.14. Her strikeout total of 278 was second in the SCL.

At the plate, Spini hit .408 with 40 RBI. She hit five homeruns, including a walk off in the bottom of the eighth inning in the first round of the playoffs against Yreka. Her home run total was tied for the best in the SCL, and she was second in RBI.

Spini’s other claim to fame at the plate was breaking pitcher Jessica Moore’s three-plus game no-hit streak, when Mt. Shasta played the Sutter “sports factory” in the section championship game. It was the only hit given up by Moore in the playoffs.

From the circle and the plate, Kayla Spini has earned an Impact Player Award.

bowen-ad-rev.jpgThe Impact Player Award is given on a monthly basis and goes to Siskiyou County high school athletes, male or female, that have had a significant impact on the success of their team. I select the players based on my own observations, often in consultation with the player’s coaches.

A total of four awards may be given each month and are not school specific; they can go to a player at any school that Siskiyou Youth covers. Winners receive Impact T-shirts that were designed by Golden Grotto. The T-shirts and award are cosponsored by Siskiyou Youth and NorCal Classic Hits radio 102.3/101.7.

jorgensen-impact.jpgI admit it. I’m not usually as impressed by athletic proficiency in individual sports as I am in team sports. There’s something about people working together to achieve a goal that I find really appealing. However, there are exceptions. One exception is an athlete that is excellent at more than one individual event, especially if those events happen to be grueling—grueling like distance running.

When it comes to middle and long distance running, one of the best in Siskiyou County is Yreka High School junior Kevin Jorgensen. Jorgensen won the 800m and 1600m races at the Northern Athletic League championship meet, last Friday. He also finished second in the 3200m.

yac-300-b.jpgJorgensen’s top time this season for the 800m is 1:58.60, second best in the North Section. He has the fourth best 1600m time in the section (4:33.06).

In the fall, Jorgensen competed in cross country, finishing fourth at the NAL championships in the 5,000m.

Personally, I have a rule about running. If there’s no ball, I’m not running. But, that doesn’t diminish my appreciation for the difficulty involved in distance running. It might be one of the few sports where you can finish last and still have accomplished something. Finishing last obviously isn’t an issue for Jorgensen, which makes him that much more impressive.

So, with that appreciation in mind, Kevin Jorgensen is an Impact Player Award winner. (more…)

SHASTA LAKE CITY – There are a couple of things that teams in the NorthSection have learned about the Yreka Miners over the past couple of years—never under estimate them and never count them out.

Last year, it was the eleventh-seeded Miner boys basketball team that reached the section finals by beating the sixth, third, and second seeded teams. The Miners eventually fell in the championship game to Central Valley, but not before giving the Falcons a scare.

This season, after battling injuries to multiple top players, the Miners baseball team barely made it into the post season as the eighth and final seed. It didn’t matter. In round-one, Yreka took out top seed Winters, 5-1. Then, they eliminated the four-seed, Wheatland, 9-8. (more…)
