If you can’t find something to do this weekend, you’re not looking very hard. I found lots to do for Siskiyou Youth.
I’m starting off with the motocross races at the Siskiyou Golden Fair Grounds at 8:00 on Saturday morning. Then, I’ll finish the day with the Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo in Montague at 5:00 pm.
Another choice good choice would be the SharkFest swim meet in Etna. The competition features eight teams, including the Yreka, Scott Valley, and South Siskiyou swim clubs. SharkFest is one of the biggest and best youth sports events in our area, with over 250 competitors. It’s happening both Saturday and Sunday, starting at 9:00 am. I’ll be there on Sunday.
Note: The Siskiyou Heat ASA U-12 game scheduled for Saturday has been canceled.

So, what are you doing this summer? Sitting around eating nachos and playing video games? Maybe you’re doing something to prepare for next year’s sports seasons, like a little running, or playing hoops once a week. Or, maybe you’re truly dedicated and making a serious commitment to excel. For Mt. Shasta High School football player Tim Jaegel, it’s all about commitment and dedication.
Jaegel, a junior, said his goal after high school is to land a division-I football scholarship, and he knows that to even come close will require a tremendous amount of work—work he is willing to do.
“My long term goal after high school would be, of course, to get a scholarship to play division-I football, but I understand that to achieve a far fetched goal such as this I have to put in my share of hours in the weight room, track and the football field,” said Jaegel. “Right now, I’m going through a summer program
that includes lifting and running three days a week. I run with Shannon Maas the track coach at COS to get my 40-yard-dash time down to a 4.7, and I lift with my step dad to also get me faster and stronger.”
In addition to the informal workouts this summer, Jaegel attended the University of California Full Contact Football Camp, held at UC Berkeley’s Memorial Stadium. The camp is run by Cal Head Coach Jeff Tedford and his staff. Jaegel said that he spent most of the three day camp working with tightends coach Pete Alamar. (more…)

WEED – Luke Menard, who finished in the top-eight men on “American Idol: Season 7,” will be performing in the College of the Siskiyous Kenneth W. Ford Theater on Sunday evening, June 28, at 7:00 pm. When not performing his solo show across the United States, Menard is performing with Chapter 6, a popular a cappella group. His solo work has also included performing on E! Entertainment, Extra, and America Sings in Washington D.C. at Constitutional Hall.
Born and raised in Indiana, Menard began singing during his freshman year in high school. After graduating with a degree in Communications from Milkin University in Illinois, he worked for a Chicago-based finance company before joining Chapter 6 , which started his career in show business.
Auditioning for American Idol in Omaha, Menard was out to prove that he was more than just a pretty face. He managed to impress the judges long enough to offer him a golden ticket to Hollywood. From there, everything went quite smoothly as he managed to get into the top 24 aspirants for the much coveted title of being the next American Idol.
“As a small town guy who made it big, he should be an inspiration to entertainment hopefuls in Siskiyou County,” said Elaine Schaefer, Director of Choral Studies at College of the Siskiyous.
Not long after his appearance on American Idol, Menard was diagnosed with cancer and spent the next year fighting cancer while still performing with Chapter 6 and as a soloist. His story is one of inspiration and on June 28, Menard will perform and talk about his American Idol experience at the concert. Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at the door. Proceeds from the concert will be used for scholarships to be awarded to students who plan to attend the 2010 COS Vocal Jazz and Show Choir Camp.
For more information about the performance contact Elaine Schaefer at (530) 938-5315 or call the COS Box Office at (530) 938-5366.

The purpose of the TEAMWorks! Soccer Clinic is for kids to not only grow in their skills as soccer players, but in their character as well. While learning skills that will help their ball control, passing, shooting and defending, players will also learn what it takes to be great in life.
“TEAMWorks! is about more than soccer. It’s about investing in our community and demonstrating how much God values children and families,” said Jeff Summers, Executive Pastor of the Evangelical Free Church in Mount Shasta. (more…)
