norcal.jpgThe Siskiyou Heat U-14 ASA softball team traveled to Redding in the scorching heat to play two games on Wednesday night. The first team, the Redding Rapids, had a very solid pitcher who was throwing smoke. She held the Heat to only five hits in five innings before the game was called due to time. Riva Martin had another great game in the circle for the Heat, allowing only one run. She struck out seven, and gave up just two hits and two walks. Rachael Luetke led the Heat with her bat, going 2/3 with a double and a towering homerun over the left field fence. Jenna Turner, Lacie Landrum and Krystal Palmer each added hits and the Heat came away with a win: Heat 6 – Rapids 1. nsa-in-story.jpgThe Siskiyou Heat U-14 team traveled to Newberg Oregon, near Portland, last weekend to compete in the NAFA Tri-State Finals. There were 17 U-14 teams, which made for tough competition.

The Heat came out firing in the first game against the Lady Scots of Salem. Riva Martin took the mound and pitched excellently. She only allowed one hit and one walk going into the fourth inning. Tianna Cruz came in to shut the door in the fourth.

The Heat’s bats came alive in the game. Jenna Turner returned to the team in the lead off position, after a month vacation, and led all batters going 3/4. Lacie Landrum was solid with her glove and at the bat, going 2/4 and scoring twice. Tianna Cruz, Rachel Luetke, Katie Brummett and Krystal Palmer all had two hits. Viviana Castaneda and Morgan Deany added a hit in the win. Final score: Heat 13 – Lady Scots 2. (more…)

jordan-pehle-munson.jpgFormer Etna Lion quarterback and safety Jordan Pehle-Munson has been added to the North roster for the Lions All-Star game, replacing Modoc’s Dee Hunsaker who was unable to play.

A 2009 Etna grad, Munson led the Lions to an 8-4 record and a D-IV North Section semi-final game, last season.

When Munson received the call from North coach Shaun Wood (Modoc) asking him if he was interested in playing, his reply left no doubt.

“Hell, yeah,” said Munson.

Munson was added to the roster as a quarterback, safety, and wide receiver. He joins fellow Etna Lion Alex Case.

The Lions All-Star football game takes place at Shasta College  in Redding on Saturday,  July 25 at 7:30 pm.

valley-tire-red-300.jpgScott Valley wrestlers Gerardo Gonzalez, Chris Sutter, Scott Town and Hayden Kaae, along with Etna high school coach Kyle Kaae, attended a three day wrestling camp sponsored by the Henley Mat Club. The camp was held at Henley High School in mid June

Jim Zalesky, Oregon State University head wrestling coach, and two assistant coaches, Keven Roberts and Travis Pascoe, taught three styles of wrestling—Greco Roman, Freestyle, and Folk style.

One of the highlights of the camp was an Iron Man competition, which consisted of three timed events. The first event was the piggy back carry where a wrestler and his partner carry each other for 1/2 mile. Then the partners teamed up for a 60-yard tire flip. The tire weighed in at 270 pounds. The final event was the truck pull, with the partners pulling an F-350 Crew Cab pickup for thirty yards.

Independence Day is a big event in Butte Valley. Everyone from little babies to retired seniors participated, but Independence Day would not be the same without the youthful spirit of the teenagers in the community.

balloon-ad.jpgYouth from all around the community ranging from Butte Valley 4H and Butte Valley FFA to royalty and cheerleaders participated in the celebrations. Not everyone who participated had to be part of a group either, there where many teenagers that helped out just because they wanted to.

The day started out with a breakfast put on by the Butte Valley FFA. After the breakfast the cheerleaders got together and started selling soda and water to the people waiting to watch the parade. (more…)
