allison-victor.jpgYREKA- In these tough economic times, the 2009 Siskiyou Golden Fair offers a lot of fun and free entertainment for the whole family. From animal races to clown acts and live music, everyone should be able to find something they enjoy.

The Great American Petting Zoo will be in Yreka with their hand-raised animals from Oregon. This petting zoo, sponsored by Nor Cal Products of Yreka, is different than most however—no barriers enclose the animals so you can run freely with them.

Be sure to check out the Farmyard Follies Edu-Tainment Animal Show at the fair. This show, which features creatures from the Great American Petting Zoo, includes animal antics and behaviors as well as fascinating facts and stories about each type of animals. Fiona the Donkey is sure to make you laugh as she “helps” during the show.

nsa-in-story.jpgAlso coming this year will be the GASCAR Crazy Animal Races. This is animal racing as you have never seen it. Check out the Goats, chickens, pigs, sheep and other surprise animals’ race around, and sometimes over the track. This entertaining and educational show is sure to bring laughter to the whole family.

Back for their fourth straight year is Mother Goose and Humphrey’s  Farmyard Fun. This is Agri-education and Agri-tainment at its finest. Kids can make their own dirt babies and learn hands on about butter churning and wheat grinding. Be sure to also check out Mother Goose’s Magic Shows every day. This attraction is sponsored by Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka. (more…)

She hasn’t even started her senior year at Yreka High School, but Alana Hall has already completed her senior project—an incredible trip to Uganda. Hall, the daughter of Mary Ann and Jon Hall, joined 18 other adventurers from the Mountain Christian Fellowship, based in Medford, Ore., on a 15-day journey that left San Francisco on July 4, traveled through three countries, and returned to the states on July 19.

Along the way, Hall had the opportunity to go “dune bashing” in a Toyota Land Cruiser in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and tour the headwaters of the Nile River in Uganda. The group also had a stop-over in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

While Hall had the opportunity to see many sights, the trip wasn’t about being a tourist. It was about bringing education and joy to orphaned children living in the green and lush village of Jinja, Uganda, located on the shores of Lake Victoria.

Hall and the group arrived in Jinja after a six-hour bus ride from the airport in Entebbe, Uganda. While it took them several days to get used to the 10 hour time change, it appears that it didn’t take long to form a bond with the children. That bond was one of the highlights of the trip for Hall.

y-ad-1-click.jpg“The most fun part of the trip was spending time with the Ugandan children,” said Hall.

During their time in Jinja, the Mountain Christian Fellowship team worked with the Aids Orphan Educational Training organization (AOET). According to AOET’s website, it is, “(a)n independent, indigenous, non-governmental organization with the prime mandate of providing an education—formal and/or vocational—to desperately poor, neglected and forgotten orphans whose parents have died of AIDS. AOET assists children with AIDS and widows that have lost their spouses to AIDS and most of them (are) HIV+ themselves.” (more…)

hutchinson-cookie.jpgBEND, OreMt. Shasta High School graduate Jerika Hutchinson finished second in the Individual Time Trials at the USA Cycling U-23 National Championships, held in Bend, Ore., last Friday, with a time of  53:58.30.

Hutchinson was also in a strong position in the main group with about 10 kilometers to go in the Road Race the prior day, when she had the misfortune of getting tangled up in a multiple rider pile up in the feed zone. While the crash ended her Road Race, Hutchinson doesn’t feel that it hindered her Time Trial effort.

“I don’t think my crash really affected my TT (Time Trial). I had great work done on my hip by our team swanny (assistant), John. I worked in the pool on range of motion and made sure everything was 100-percent perfect for the next day,” said Hutchinson.

balloon-ad.jpgAsked about her effort in the time trial, Hutchinson said, “I’m happy with my effort. I stepped off my bike with nothing more to give, that’s all that any athlete can ask of themselves.”

Hutchinson, who has spent most of the season racing in France, said that her season has gone “really well.” She feels that her fitness and strength have improved and that she’s able to go “harder longer” in races. Hutchinson’s training regiment focuses on base miles and quick recovery. (more…)
