Yreka v Corning (11) front

bowen-ad-rev.jpgYREKA – The Yreka Lady Miners volleyball team smoked the Corning Cardinals (5-3) last Thursday night, 3-0. It was perhaps the Lady Miners most impressive showing of the season.

After winning game one 25-7, Yreka found itself in a 10-3 hole in game two. The Lady Miners fortunes changed, however, with a kill by Olivia Duncan that began a 7-0 run. Duncan’s kill made the score 10-4 and sent her to the service line. She promptly nailed an ace. Alexis Yaple and Mallory Greenfield followed with kills, to bring the score to 10-7. Yaple and Greenfield combined for a block to tie the score at 10-10. (more…)

Impact MaumasiMt. Shasta Bear Mark Maumasi makes an impact every time he steps on the field. Often, it’s in the form of a bone crushing hit, and it can be from either side of the ball.

Earlier this season, Maumasi was instrumental in the Bears’ game winning drive against Yreka, pounding out chunks of yardage, before finally breaking a tackle to score the game-winning TD with nine seconds on the clock.

Last week, in the Bears 23-0 romp over Willows, Maumasi rushed for two TDs and around 150 yards. He also recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Stats aren’t available yet for the game, but rest assured that Maumasi had his share of tackles as well.

On the season, Maumasi leads Mt. Shasta in rushing, scoring, and tackles, leaving little doubt that he deserves an Impact Player Award.

coffee-break-b.jpgThe Impact Player Award is given on a monthly basis and goes to Siskiyou County high school athletes, male or female, that have had a significant impact on the success of their team. I select the players based on my own observations, often in consultation with the player’s coaches.

A total of four awards may be given each month and are not school specific; they can go to a player at any school that Siskiyou Youth covers. Winners receive Impact T-shirts that were designed by Golden Grotto. The T-shirts and award are cosponsored by SiskiyouYouth.com and NorCal Classic Hits radio, KCWH, 102.3/101.7

Mt. Shasta v Etna front

svpt-small.jpgMOUNT SHASTA – For folks who were fans of Southern Rock in the late 70s and early 80s, watching the last couple of Etna Lady Lions volleyball matches may bring back memories of the song “Flirtin’ with Disaster,” by Molly Hatchet.

First, Etna (9-1) went five games with the Modoc Braves (3-7), before eventually winning, 3-2, on Saturday. Then, Etna came out flat against the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears (5-5), escaping with a 3-1 win and needing two big comebacks to do it.

Etna, leading Fall River by 1 ½ games, is chasing a Shasta Cascade League title and has a legitimate opportunity for a top-four playoff seed. Mt. Shasta is fighting for its playoff life, and the Lady Bears were the team that appeared hungry for the win. (more…)

West CoastLady Miner Kendall Taylor earned All-League honors at the Northern Athletic League tennis championships held last Friday and Saturday at Anderson High School.

“In her final singles match Kendall outplayed a very worthy opponent to win all-league recognition and the right to play in the section finals next Saturday,” said Yreka Coach Steve Pyles.

Heidi Sanders advanced to the final round in singles, but fell short, losing 6-4, 6-4. Taylor and Sanders also advanced to the final round as doubles partners, before being eliminated.

y-ad-1-click.jpgThe Siskiyou Knights Junior Midgets are headed to the post season after a 27–25 victory over the Anderson Cubs last Saturday. The difference was points after touchdown. the Knights converted 3 of 4 while Anderson missed all but one, including a 2 point kick that was blocked.

The Knights trailed 19–13 at halftime and came out ready to play in the second half. The Knights took the lead 20-19 in the 3rd quarter and added another score in the 4th quarter to make it 27-19. Anderson came back to score a touchdown to make it 27 -25, then lined up to kick a 2-point conversion. Knights defense dug deep, had great penetration, and blocked the kick. The Knights then traded possessions with Anderson, had a great defensive stand, and ended the game with a kneel-down. With this victory, the Knights advance to the playoffs where they go against the Colusa Cowboys this Saturday, 2:00 PM in Yuba City at Yuba City High School. (more…)

Etna v Weed (10) front

Story and photos by Jasha Reynolds

valley-tire-red-300.jpgETNA  – Lion football  in 2009 has seen its share of twists and turns. Bottom line, it is what it is. Make do with what you got, and get things done one game at a time.

With a never give up attitude, an all but new offensive play book, new head coach Andy Dean,  and a new outlook, the Etna Lions came from behind Friday night to beat the Weed Cougars 32-26 to move to 4-5 on the season.

Senior Hank Johnson scored first for Etna on a 4-yard plunge up the gut to give the Lions an early 6-0 lead. But, the always tough Weed Cougars had an answer. Cougar signal caller, Cody Beam, hooked up with wide-out Micah White for a 33-yard touchdown, after the PAT Weed led 7-6. (more…)

Etna v Modoc (3) front

svpt-small.jpgETNA – The Etna Lions soccer team pounded the Modoc Braves 6-0 in the last match of the Shasta Cascade League regular season.

It took the Lions less than a minute to get the only goal they would need, when Erik Anaya knocked home a cross from Junior Zavalza. The Lions scored a goal about every 10 minutes in the first half.

Juan Castaneda made it 2-0 at the 11-minute mark. Anaya picked up his second tally 21 minutes into the match for a 3-0 Lion advantage. Castaneda had the assist on Anaya’s goal. Castaneda scored his second goal ten minutes later. Justin Hiett joined the party with a goal just before halftime, assisted by Castaneda to up the advantage to 5-0. (more…)

Mt. Shasta v Willows (1) front

coffee-break-b.jpgMOUNT SHASTA – When the Willows Honkers finally went to sleep last night, they likely had nightmares—nightmares where Bears were dining on smoked goose. Two of the feeding Bears were wearing numbers 40 and 57.

The Mt. Shasta Bears’ number-40, Mark Maumasi, ran over, through and around Honkers all night for nearly 150 yards, including TD runs of nine and 46 yards. Number-40 also recovered a botched lateral and returned it for a TD.

Bear number-57, Kenny Galten, spent a good deal of the game in the Honker backfield, Friday night, registering three sacks and a safety among his seven solo tackles. (more…)

scm-ad.jpgBURNEY – The Burney Lady Raiders battled the visiting Mt. Shasta Lady Bears Thursday for sole possession of third place in the Shasta Cascade League standings. Mt. Shasta took the first two games and looked poised to remain two games behind the SCL leading Etna Lions heading down the backstretch of league play. But Burney wants that spot as well and responded to take the next three games and win the competition in five.

Neither team wanted to yield, and four of the five games were decided by two points, with three of them needing extended play to determine the winner. (more…)

Impact Hope BThe Dunsmuir Lady Tigers were down 19-15 to Big Valley in game two of their recent volleyball match, when senior Jennifer Hope rotated to server. Ten serves later, Hope and her teammates had won the game 25-19, scoring 10 straight service points, including five aces and a kill by Hope. That’s the sort of thing that will get you consideration for an Impact Player Award.

Hope’s string of points weren’t a one time thing. She leads her team in both kills and aces this season. Last season, as a junior, she was first in kills and second in aces. Hope’s impact on the Lady Tigers isn’t limited to volleyball.

Last basketball season, she led the team in scoring. During softball last season, Hope led the team in RBI, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and was tied for first in runs scored. She also had the second highest batting average.

Hope’s career consistency in multiple sports and ability to come through when it counts the most has earned her an Impact Player Award.
