Yreka v Corning (11) front

bowen-ad-rev.jpgYREKA – The Yreka Lady Miners volleyball team smoked the Corning Cardinals (5-3) last Thursday night, 3-0. It was perhaps the Lady Miners most impressive showing of the season.

After winning game one 25-7, Yreka found itself in a 10-3 hole in game two. The Lady Miners fortunes changed, however, with a kill by Olivia Duncan that began a 7-0 run. Duncan’s kill made the score 10-4 and sent her to the service line. She promptly nailed an ace. Alexis Yaple and Mallory Greenfield followed with kills, to bring the score to 10-7. Yaple and Greenfield combined for a block to tie the score at 10-10. (more…)

Impact MaumasiMt. Shasta Bear Mark Maumasi makes an impact every time he steps on the field. Often, it’s in the form of a bone crushing hit, and it can be from either side of the ball.

Earlier this season, Maumasi was instrumental in the Bears’ game winning drive against Yreka, pounding out chunks of yardage, before finally breaking a tackle to score the game-winning TD with nine seconds on the clock.

Last week, in the Bears 23-0 romp over Willows, Maumasi rushed for two TDs and around 150 yards. He also recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Stats aren’t available yet for the game, but rest assured that Maumasi had his share of tackles as well.

On the season, Maumasi leads Mt. Shasta in rushing, scoring, and tackles, leaving little doubt that he deserves an Impact Player Award.

coffee-break-b.jpgThe Impact Player Award is given on a monthly basis and goes to Siskiyou County high school athletes, male or female, that have had a significant impact on the success of their team. I select the players based on my own observations, often in consultation with the player’s coaches.

A total of four awards may be given each month and are not school specific; they can go to a player at any school that Siskiyou Youth covers. Winners receive Impact T-shirts that were designed by Golden Grotto. The T-shirts and award are cosponsored by SiskiyouYouth.com and NorCal Classic Hits radio, KCWH, 102.3/101.7

Mt. Shasta v Etna front

svpt-small.jpgMOUNT SHASTA – For folks who were fans of Southern Rock in the late 70s and early 80s, watching the last couple of Etna Lady Lions volleyball matches may bring back memories of the song “Flirtin’ with Disaster,” by Molly Hatchet.

First, Etna (9-1) went five games with the Modoc Braves (3-7), before eventually winning, 3-2, on Saturday. Then, Etna came out flat against the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears (5-5), escaping with a 3-1 win and needing two big comebacks to do it.

Etna, leading Fall River by 1 ½ games, is chasing a Shasta Cascade League title and has a legitimate opportunity for a top-four playoff seed. Mt. Shasta is fighting for its playoff life, and the Lady Bears were the team that appeared hungry for the win. (more…)

West CoastLady Miner Kendall Taylor earned All-League honors at the Northern Athletic League tennis championships held last Friday and Saturday at Anderson High School.

“In her final singles match Kendall outplayed a very worthy opponent to win all-league recognition and the right to play in the section finals next Saturday,” said Yreka Coach Steve Pyles.

Heidi Sanders advanced to the final round in singles, but fell short, losing 6-4, 6-4. Taylor and Sanders also advanced to the final round as doubles partners, before being eliminated.

y-ad-1-click.jpgThe Siskiyou Knights Junior Midgets are headed to the post season after a 27–25 victory over the Anderson Cubs last Saturday. The difference was points after touchdown. the Knights converted 3 of 4 while Anderson missed all but one, including a 2 point kick that was blocked.

The Knights trailed 19–13 at halftime and came out ready to play in the second half. The Knights took the lead 20-19 in the 3rd quarter and added another score in the 4th quarter to make it 27-19. Anderson came back to score a touchdown to make it 27 -25, then lined up to kick a 2-point conversion. Knights defense dug deep, had great penetration, and blocked the kick. The Knights then traded possessions with Anderson, had a great defensive stand, and ended the game with a kneel-down. With this victory, the Knights advance to the playoffs where they go against the Colusa Cowboys this Saturday, 2:00 PM in Yuba City at Yuba City High School. (more…)

valley-tire-red-300.jpgETNA  – Lion football  in 2009 has seen its share of twists and turns. Bottom line, it is what it is. Make do with what you got, and get things done one game at a time.

With a never give up attitude, an all but new offensive play book, new head coach Andy Dean,  and a new outlook, the Etna Lions came from behind Friday night to beat the Weed Cougars 32-26 to move to 4-5 on the season.

Senior Hank Johnson scored first for Etna on a 4-yard plunge up the gut to give the Lions an early 6-0 lead. But, the always tough Weed Cougars had an answer. Cougar signal caller, Cody Beam, hooked up with wide-out Micah White for a 33-yard touchdown, after the PAT Weed led 7-6. (more…)
