DUNSMUIR – The Dunsmuir Lady Tigers came back from five down to win the pivotal second game of their match with the Big Valley Lady Cardinals. Mighty Mites
Last weekend, the Charger Mighty Mites took on the Central Valley Jr. Falcons. It was a competition against equals, as they battled to a tie. The two Mighty Mite teams played aggressively on both sides of the ball, all the way to the end of the fourth quarter. The hard to take down Skylar “The Wreckn’ Ball” Conrad scored another touchdown for the season as did Jake “The Snake” Peterson. Defensively all the Charger Mighty Mites played at their best. Devon Applewhite made impressive tackles, as did Wesley Ward. Many fumbles were caused by the Charger defense making for a very exciting fourth quarter. We have one more game left against the Corning Lions this next Saturday at 8:45 am. (more…)

MOUNT SHASTA – The Mt. Shasta Bears soccer team clinched the Shasta Cascade League Championship with a 7-0 win over Trinity on Tuesday. That victory also extended their SCL win streak to 19 games, including league play and post season tournament games. On Wednesday, the Fall River Bulldogs took a bite out of the Bears season, downing the champs 2-0, and breaking the streak.
About 34 minutes into the match, Bulldog Edgar Alvarez crossed a pass in front of the Bear goal. The ball bounced around among a group of players, before Raphael Tschirky knocked it home for the Bulldogs, giving them a 1-0 lead. (more…)

ETNA – The first soccer game ever played at Duncan Field (Etna’s football field) couldn’t have turned out much better for the host Lions. With just seconds remaining in the match and the score tied 2-2, Junior Zavalza lofted a corner kick to near the 18-yard mark. Brent Davis, who had moved up from his defender position, hammered a header into the Weed Cougar goal for the game-winner.
The goal was not only the game-winner, but also the only time Etna led in the match. Weed took the led at the 18-minute mark, when Salvador Avila headed in a pass from Usmaro Sanchez. (more…)

QUINCY – The College of the Siskiyous Screamin’ Eagles came back from a nine-point halftime deficit, 22-13, to defeat the Feather River Golden Eagles, 25-22, last Saturday.
The game winning touchdown was set up by a Jamal Pannell interception and 67-yard return to the Feather River 8-yard-line. Three plays later, Eagle quarterback Josh Hudson connected with Hakeim Pearson for a 4-yard TD. Aaron Sinnott added the PAT, to give the Eagles the lead 25-22 with 1:22 to play in the game.
Devin Howard sealed the deal for the Eagles when he sacked Feather River quarterback Rickey Mitchell, causing a fumble that was recovered by COS to end the game. (more…)

Sometimes there’s just no way to candy-coat what really happened—no way to put a positive spin on a bad performance. Of course, football players don’t like candy-coating anyway. The Lions varsity football team lost, 12-6, to the team everyone schedules for homecoming, the Los Molinos Bulldogs (1-2, 2-4).
Oh wait, there were some positive things from Etna’s homecoming last Friday.
The ceremony for the royalty was great. The princesses were fantastic and arrived in some sweet rides. Queen Ilima Adams looked like a healthy version of a super model, and King Hank Johnson was hilarious, as usual. The crown bearers, Kylie Daws and Devin Dean, were incredibly cute. (more…)

After a humbling loss at Hayfork last week, the Dunsmuir Tigers spent an entire week channeling their aggression towards the next game. Unfortunately for the Liberty Christian Patriots, they were the next game.
Dunsmuir humiliated the Patriots 71-6 at the Dunsmuir City Park Field on Friday, improving to 6-1 while handling the Patriots their first loss in six games.
The Tigers expressed confidence all week that they could move the ball freely against Liberty, which had not played a team with a winning record until Friday. The Tigers were right. Nate Gonzalez and Colton “Crash” Sordahl each tallied 4 TDs, while LT Hisey threw for two and ran for one. (more…)

MCARTHUR – The Fall River Lady Bulldogs have won at least a share of the Shasta Cascade League title for four consecutive years and they’re not letting the fifth go without a fight. The Etna Lady Lions entered Thursday’s contest with Fall River unscathed in SCL play and if the Bulldogs, with two league losses, wanted to stay in the title hunt they needed to beat the big cats. Well, the race for the SCL just got a little tighter as Fall River downed Etna in three straight 14-25, 25-27 and 25-23 to move within a game of the league leaders.
Etna (6-1 SCL, 15-12-1) was the harder hitting and serving team led by outside hitter Clair Pynes. The Lions were without setter Emily Loogman, due to illness, which led to some confusion on offense early on but it was unforced errors that led to their fall. Pynes led all hitters with 16 kills. There’s a type of player that every football coach is happy to have. You know the type—hard worker, committed, and hits like a freight train, with or without the ball. Weed Cougar Travis Andrews is one of those players.
Cougar Coach Erik Johnson can spend 10 minutes talking about Andrews, when all you really asked for was the time. Johnson calls Andrews “The Beast.” Mind you that is THE Beast, not a beast. Why?
Well, the homecoming game against Los Molinos, a 41-0 win for Weed, is a good example. Andrews scored two touchdowns, one running and one receiving. He threw a TD pass during a fake punt. Ran the ball 11 times for 80 yards,
and had 14 tackles—not bad for a night’s work.
For the season, Andrews leads his team in tackles and touchdowns scored. He’s also fourth in the Shasta Cascade League in tackles per game.
Add that all up and it’s pretty clear that Travis Andrews has a positive impact on his Cougar team. And that, earns him an Impact Player Award.
The Impact Player Award is given on a monthly basis and goes to Siskiyou County high school athletes, male or female, that have had a significant impact on the success of their team. I select the players based on my own observations, often in consultation with the player’s coaches. (more…)
