Yreka

ANDERSON – It appears that you need to be a full grown bear to beat the Lady Miners, because the Anderson Cubs were swept by Yreka on Tuesday night. The varsity won 3-2. The junior varsity and frosh both won 2-0.
Olivia Duncan led the way for the varsity with 16 kills and eight aces—including the match-winning ace. The winner was drilled cross court to the back corner, leaving the Cubs no chance for a return. (more…)

Every year, the best homecoming Powder Puff game takes place in Etna. Why? Well, I’ll get to that shortly. First, allow me to take care of the game info.
The Senior/Frosh squad won the contest 16-12 over the Junior/Soph team.
The Junior/Sophs struck first on a 3-yard TD run by junior Emily Loogman, with 7:26 left in the first quarter. The 2-point conversion failed, but the Junior/Sophs led 6-0. (more…)

Football, volleyball, and soccer seasons are all at or beyond the midway point in the Shasta Cascade League. While none of the championships have been mathematically decided, some clear favorites have emerged.
Football
Modoc sits on top with a record of 3-0 (6-0). Fall River is in second place at 2-1 (4-2). While Fall River mathematically has a chance to catch Modoc, don’t bet on it. Fall River is perfectly capable of running the table the remainder of the league season, with SCL games left with Burney (1-1, 4-2), Etna (1-2, 3-4), and Chester (1-1, 2-3). However, it is unlikely that Modoc will falter in its remaining three games against Weed, Chester, and Los Molinos. Those three teams are a combined 2-5 in the SCL, and 6-10 overall. (more…)

Mighty Mites
The Yreka Chargers Mighty Mite defense was at its optimum this past Saturday against the Willows Coyotes. The Coyotes barely had a chance to get off the fifty yard line against the Charger defensive line of Wesley Ward, Travis Arwood, Skylar Conrad, Antonio Fernandez and Randall (RV) Hughes. Devon Applewhite had an outstanding tackle in the backfield as did Wesley Ward and Hughes.
Skylar “The Wreckn’ Ball” Conrad ran for two touchdowns in the second quarter, right through the Coyote defense. Donovan Wilson also did a good job stepping in as center. Ward had a very exciting 15-yard run followed by an impressive 25-yard run by Jai Case. All of the positive yardage and touchdowns gained by the Yreka Chargers could not have been accomplished without the offensive efforts of Jake Peterson, Earl Croy Jr., Travis Hedin and Arwood. Arwood was an essential blocker by constantly driving the opponent down the field and opening up holes. (more…)

Etna

I have a friend who’s won so many slow pitch softball all-tourney and MVP awards that his wife made a quilt out of the T-Shirts. Etna Lady Lion volleyball standout Claire Pynes is well on her way to building a tent out her award t-shirts.
I spoke to Pynes last night on the phone following her team’s decisive win over Burney and told her that it was time for her annual Impact Player Award. She laughed.
The simple truth is that Pynes is the best volleyball player in Siskiyou County and the Shasta Cascade League, as well as probably one of the top five players in the section.
This season, Pynes leads the Shasta Cascade League in kills (230), and is second in the North Section in kill percentage (34.4). As well as leading the Lady Lions in kills, she is second in aces (54), and third in blocks and digs.
Pynes has also played club volleyball for the last three years, playing with mOcean out of Ashland the last two seasons, as well as Club Shasta between her freshman and sophomore years. mOcean is coached by members of Southern Oregon University’s volleyball staff. Club Shasta was coached by Fall River High School’s head coach Kelly Sloat.
Partially based on her comfort level with the SOU coaches, Pynes has verbally committed to playing for the SOU Raiders next season. (more…)

ETNA – The Etna Lady Lions volleyball team emerged victorious from a mid-season showdown with the Burney Lady Raiders on Tuesday night in Carl Smith Gym. Etna remained undefeated in Shasta Cascade League play at 6-0 (14-11-1), with Burney dropping to 4-2 (13-4-4).
Etna swept the match, 3-0, but not without some difficulties. After the Lions cruised to a 25-14 win in game-one, the Raiders dominated the middle portion of the second game. (more…)

Mt. Shasta

By Rick Martin
On a mistake-filled Friday night at Mt. Shasta High School, the host Bears made a couple more gaffes than the visiting Pierce Bears and fell, 8-6 in a Sacramento Valley League contest.
Things started on a promising note for Mt. Shasta (2-5, 1-2) as they took the ball on their first possession and marched all the way to the Pierce one-yard line. But Mt. Shasta failed to score on the drive, turning the ball over on downs at the one. The defense forced a punt, and Mt. Shasta got the ball back, driving deep into Pierce territory again. But once more, they couldn’t close the deal, turning it over on downs at the 27-yard-line. (more…)

WEED - College of the Siskiyous Resident Adviser Amanda Bates is teaming up with Ty Speck, Student Lodging Coordinator to organize a fundraiser for Locks of Love, an organization that provides human hair wigs for patients undergoing Chemo-therapy.
The pair plans to get community members and every campus club involved to help sell Ty’s hair, which is currently 22 inches long. The first ten inches will be donated. For an additional five inches, $1,000 will need to be raised and $500 more for an additional five inches. If a total of $2,000 is raised between October 21 and October 27, Amanda will buzz off Ty’s hair on October 28 in front of the student center and all students, staff and faculty.
Those in the community who are interested in participating in the fundraiser by also donating 10”or more of hair should contact Ty Speck at 530-938-5237. WEED – The College of the Siskiyou Eagles allowed Yuba just 74 yards rushing, while racking up 51 points, in a dominating win over the Forty-Niners on Saturday.
It took the Eagles five plays and 2:30 to cover 62 yards on the game’s opening drive, with the touchdown coming on a throwback from wide receiver Zach Young to quarterback Josh Hudson.
Less than three minutes later, Hudson hit Alex Coleman for a nine yard TD strike. With Aaron Sinnott’s PAT, it was 13-0. (more…)

WEED – The Mt. Shasta Bears soccer team remains undefeated in the Shasta Cascade League after downing the Weed Cougars, 2-0, on Thursday.
Sawyer Ducharme opened the scoring for the Bears at the 23-minute mark. With about five minutes to go in the first half, Weed had a golden opportunity to score. The ball got behind the Bear goalkeeper, but defender Alastair Curley came up with the save to preserve Mt. Shasta’s 1-0 lead going into halftime. (more…)

Mighty Mites
Not only did the Yreka Chargers Mighty Mites have to face the South Siskiyou Knights this past Saturday, they also had to battle the cold temperatures and freezing winds. This was a scrimmage style game with half of the Chargers Mighty Mites taking turns filling positions for the South Siskiyou team. Jake Peterson, scored two touchdowns for the South Siskiyou team, while Davon Ruiz, ran his first ever touch down for the Yreka Chargers Mighty Mites. Next week, don’t miss the 8:45 am face off against Willows. If you haven’t seen these little guys play you are really missing out. (more…)
