coffee-break-b.jpgThe fall soccer season is over for Siskiyou County high school teams (Yreka plays in the winter). So, I thought I’d put together some of my favorite photos from the season in a slide show, as well as share some of the achievements of our local teams and players.

We had two league champions. Mt. Shasta won the Shasta Cascade League (9-1, 11-2) for the fourth straight year, and finished second in the SCL post season tournament. Tulelake (8-1, 9-1-1) won the Evergreen League.

Etna (6-4, 6-7) finished third in the SCL and Weed (2-8, 2-8-1) was fourth, with both qualifying for the post season tourney.

The following are my picks for the best and most improved teams and players for fall soccer in Siskiyou County. These are just my opinions based on what I saw this season. I haven’t included any individuals from Tulelake because I only saw them play once. (more…)

mittan-ad-300.jpgVolleyball has ended for all of our Siskiyou County high school teams, but the memories of the 2009 season will remain. I’ve put together some of my favorite photos from the season in a slide show (including a couple of COS photos). In addition to the photos, I want to share some of the achievements of our local teams and players.

We had two league champions. The Etna Lady Lions won the Shasta Cascade League (11-1, 21-13-1) and made it to the NSCIF D-V semi-finals.

The Butte Valley Lady Bulldogs (9-1, 18-7-2) won the Evergreen League for the first time in the school’s history. Butte Valley advanced to the second round of the NSCIF D-VI playoffs. (more…)

Etna v Hamilton (7) front

svpt-small.jpgHAMILTON CITY – The Etna Lady Lions volleyball team ran into a buzz saw on Tuesday night, falling to the Hamilton Lady Braves, 3-0, in a NSCIF D-V semi-final match. While Etna (21-13-1) was eliminated from the playoffs, the Lady Lions can take pride in winning the Shasta Cascade League (11-1) and making their first semi-final appearance since earning the section title in 2003.

Fourth-seeded Etna had trouble right from the start with the top-seeded Braves, as Hamilton raced to a 17-3 game-one lead. A side out and an ace by Emily Loogman temporarily stopped the Hamilton freight train, but the Braves quickly got back on track and won easily, 25-10. (more…)

COS v Mendocino (1) front

yac-300-b.jpgThe College of the Siskiyous Eagles put up 483 yards of offense, scoring 38 points. Patrick Lunney ran wild for 218 yards and four touchdowns, setting the COS single season rushing record of 1549 yards (Donnie LaBorde, 1440, 1996). Yet, the Eagles blew a lead in the final seconds of the game for the second straight week, and for the third straight week lost a lead in the final two minutes.

As the fourth quarter began, COS trailed 28-27 and had the ball on its own 6-yard-line. Five Lunney runs in a row, including a 16 yard burst, moved the ball to the Siskiyous’ 40. A couple of more short runs from Lunney and a Josh Hudson to Zach Young pass for 23 yards moved the ball to the Mendocino 26. Lunney went for nine yards to the Mendo 17. After an incomplete pass, Lunney went the final 17 yards to the house for his fourth TD of the day, putting COS up 33-28. Hudson hit Isaac Silafau for the 2-point conversion, making it 35-28. Dunsmuir v Princeton Playoff (9) front

scm-ad.jpgDUNSMUIR – The Dunsmuir Tigers easily defeated the Princeton Eagles, 59-22, in the first round of the NSCIF Division-VI (8-man) football playoffs. Nate Gonzales’ four touchdowns alone were more than enough to secure the victory on Friday night. Dunsmuir also had plenty of other scoring contributions, including a fumble return for a TD by Tiger Mekeel.

Dunsmuir opened the game with a successful onside kick and moved the ball to the Princeton 35, but put coughed up the pigskin, temporarily delaying the upcoming scoring onslaught. (more…)

The first game started out with the Lady Lumberjacks (Jacks) taking a commanding lead over the Lady Bulldogs.  The Lady Jacks took control with their hard serving and spiking, getting the Bulldogs off their game. The Bulldogs fought back and eventually regained control of the ball, after a killer spike by Bulldog Kady Porterfield.  After a few tough volleys the Lady Jacks regained control and won the match 25 to 13. With the win, fourth-seeded Etna (21-12-1) advances to the semi-finals of the NSCIF D-V volleyball playoffs against the top-seeded Hamilton City Braves (34-5).

While it was Etna that prevailed over fifth-seeded Durham in the match, the upset minded Trojans took game one, 25-19. The game was tight early, but with the score tied 16-16, Durham went on a 9-3 run for the win. (more…)

Butte Valley v Champion Christian (7) front

West CoastDORRIS – The Butte Valley Lady Bulldogs came back from a game-one thumping at the hands of the 10th seeded Champion Christian Mustangs (13-11), to win 3-1 in their NSCIF D-IV first round volleyball match. With the win, 7th seeded Butte Valley improved to 16-6-2 for the season and will travel to 2nd seeded Westwood (15-5) this Thursday. Westwood dominated Princeton, 3-0, in its first round contest.

Things started well enough for the Lady Bulldogs in game one against Champion Christian, with Kady Porterfield hammering a kill to open the match. However, with Butte Valley leading 3-2, the Lady Mustangs inexplicably went on a 23-2 run to toast the host, 25-5. (more…)
