COS v American River (1) front

coffee-break-b.jpgWEED – If you’re an impartial football fan, Saturday’s contest between the College of the Siskiyous Eagles and American River Beavers was about as fun and exciting as a football game could be. However, if you’re an Eagle fan, it must have seemed like déjà vu, as COS suffered its second straight heartbreaking loss in the final minute of play, 38-35.

The fun started late in the third quarter.

After the Beavers scored to up their lead to 28-16 with 2:43 left in the third quarter, it took the Eagles less than two minutes to get their comeback bid started. The ensuing kickoff went out of bounds, and the Eagles went to work with great field position on their own 45-yard-line. (more…)

Dunsmuir v Butte Valley (9) front

scm-ad.jpgDUNSMUIR – The Dunsmuir Tigers and the Butte Valley Bulldogs came into Friday night’s contest with identical records. Each squad was 3-1 in the North Division of the California 8-man league, and 8-1 overall. On paper it looked like a contest for the ages—a shoot out for the right to host a first round playoff game. Instead, it was a blowout, with the Tigers racking up 48 first half points to none for the Dogs.

It was Dunsmuir’s night and it was Tiger quarterback Lt Hisey’s night. Hisey ran for three touchdowns and threw for another in just the first half. He would add a second TD pass in the fourth quarter, as well as throw for two 2-point conversions in the game.

Dunsmuir scored on the opening possession of the game, going 64 yards in four plays. A 49-yard run by Nate Gonzales set up a 1-yard TD run by Hisey. The 2-point conversion failed, but The Tigers led 6-0 less than two minutes into the contest. (more…)

Etna @ Burney (15) front slide

BURNEY – The Etna Lady Lions wrapped up the Shasta Cascade League volleyball championship on Thursday night, with a 3-0 win over the Burney Lady Raiders. It was the second time in three years that the Lady Lions celebrated a championship or co-championship on Burney’s court.

valley-tire-red-300.jpgEtna served notice that they had come to play, as Annaleisa Nadig ripped two aces to start the match, and the Lady Lions quickly built an 8-2 lead. Later in game one, back-to-back kills by Katie Eiler gave Etna a commanding 21-14 lead.  Burney picked up a couple of points to narrow the margin to 21-16, but two kills by Claire Pynes and a block by Emily Loogman brought Etna to game point, 24-16, and crushed any Lady Raider chance of a comeback. A Burney service error provided Etna with the last point, and a 25-17 win. (more…)

Impact PorterfieldThe first Impact Player Award for November goes to Butte Valley Lady Bulldog Kady Porterfield. Porterfield and her team recently wrapped up the Evergreen League volleyball championship—the first in Butte Valley history.

The Lady Bulldogs are loaded with talent. One of the most talented is Porterfield, who dominates both at the net and behind the service line. A junior, Porterfield leads her team in kills (203) and aces (76). She’s second in blocks with 30. Porterfield also leads the league in kills, and is third in aces and blocks.

It should also be mentioned that Porterfield is a multi sport athlete. As a sophomore last season, she was one of the best players on the Butte Valley softball team. You can also look for her to have a positive impact on the fortunes of the defending Evergreen League champion Lady Bulldogs basketball team this season.

The Impact Player Award is given on a monthly basis and goes to Siskiyou County high school athletes, male or female, that have had a significant impact on the success of their team. I select the players based on my own observations, often in consultation with the player’s coaches.

KCWH ImpactA total of four awards may be given each month and are not school specific; they can go to a player at any school that Siskiyou Youth covers. Winners receive Impact T-shirts that were designed by Golden Grotto. The T-shirts and award are cosponsored by SiskiyouYouth.com and NorCal Classic Hits radio, KCWH, 102.3/101.7

Set one of the match was a close, hard fought affair. COS led by five points at 8-3, but otherwise there was rarely more than two points separating the teams. FRC led 23-22, when Lady Eagle Charmain Mortenson nailed a kill to tie the score at 23-23. With Mortenson serving, Michelle Hoehn put COS up 24-23. A hitting error by FRC gave the Eagles the game-winning point, 25-23. (more…)
