Etna v Yreka (7) front

valley-tire-red-300.jpgETNA –The Etna Lions played perhaps their best game of the season on Tuesday night, and held off a furious comeback effort by the Yreka Miners, to win 63-61. After a couple of years off, the Lions and Miners have renewed their rivalry this season and the boys’ games have been everything a rivalry should be—close and hard fought.

Yreka led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter. Etna built a six point lead late in the second quarter, but Yreka came back to trail by just a point at halftime. With Etna leading 28-22, Luke White scored and then added a free throw, 28-25. Dillon Dow made a pair of free throws to make it 28-27 at the half. (more…)

nsa-in-story.jpgOne of the hardest calls for a basketball official is block or charge?

The rule book states:
A block is illegal contact which impedes the progress of an opponent with or without the ball.

A charge is illegal contact caused by pushing or moving into an opponent’s torso. The offensive player is required to stop or change direction to avoid contact with a defensive player that has legal guarding position (both feet on the ground and torso facing the opponent, and must keep verticality). Weed v Tulelake (4) front

mittan-ad-300.jpgWEED – If you want to see a Weed Cougar salivate, show him a zone defense. The Cougars feasted on the Tulelake Honkers zone on Monday night, particularly Tanner Shelton. Shelton had four 3-pointers in the first quarter, six in the first half, and eight on the night. About the only time Shelton wasn’t raining 3-balls on the Honkers was while he was chillin’ on the pine, watching his teammates hit from long range. Weed nailed 14 treys in the game, on the way to a 65-43 win. (more…)

Weed v Tulelake (3) front

Patterson CreekWEED – The Weed Lady Cougars got back one of their three injured senior starters on Tuesday. But, even the return of Nicolette Neel’s hustle and determination wasn’t enough to hold off the Tulelake Lady Honkers. After a close first quarter, Tulelake out ran and out muscled the depleted Lady Cougars for a 51-29 victory.

Weed led just once in the game. After a hoop by Tulelake’s Gabby Rascon and a pair of freebies by Rosana Chavolla gave the Lady Honkers a 4-1 advantage, the Lady Cougars strung together three straight baskets. A put back by Weed’s Kera Vogel made it 4-3. Neel grabbed a long rebound and was off to the races for an easy lay up, giving the Lady Cougars a 5-3 lead. A steal-n-score by Jessica Gardner upped Weed’s lead to 7-3, with 2:40 left in the first quarter. However, that was as good as it would get for the Lady Cougars. (more…)

Mt. Shasta v Yreka (8) front

Opinion by Ray Wolf

coffee-break-b.jpg

One week earlier, almost to the minute, Eric Thelander hit a buzzer beater in overtime to give the Mt. Shasta Bears a 53-51 win over the Yreka Miners at the Yreka Invitational. The tables were turned on Thursday night, when Yreka’s Luke White nailed a buzzer-beating 3-ball from just past half court for a 54-51 overtime win over the Bears in Mt. Shasta’s Holiday Tournament.

White’s shot did more than just win the game. It was the last word in another chapter of what has developed into an intense rivalry between the Miners and the Bears—a rivalry that has seen multiple comeback wins by both schools over the past two years. (more…)
