Weed v Redding Christian front

sis-dist-ad-300.jpgWEED – The Weed Cougars boys basketball team overcame a first quarter deficit to defeat the Redding Christian Lions (3-2) on Tuesday night, 55-48.

The Lions led 11-4 going into the second quarter. With the score 13-7, Weed began to click on offense. Tanner Shelton found the bottom of the net on a shot from three feet beyond the arc, making the score 13-10. A put back by Robert Gonzales made it a 1-point game, 13-12. After the Lions scored, Robert West and Shelton drained 3-balls, giving the Cougars their first lead of the night, 18-15. At the half, Weed led 22-19. (more…)

BookStore text click sized DecemberYREKA – Debbie Young is the winner of the 2010 Siskiyou Golden Fair Theme Contest. Her winning entry, “Country Roots and Cowboy Boots” was selected from among more than 200 entries received from throughout the county.

“The annual theme contest is always a great way to get county residents participating in the fair,” said fair CEO Rebecca Desmond. “We certainly appreciate the community participation.”

Each year the fair holds a county-wide contest for the annual fair theme. The theme is then selected by the Board of Directors. The theme is used in all fair marketing along with several junior and senior exhibits.

Ms. Young wins a $100 cash prize and a season pass to the 2010 Siskiyou Golden Fair.

Patterson CreekYREKA – The Siskiyou Golden Fair has once again been recognized by the International Association of Fairs & Expositions (IAFE) for outstanding agriculture programming. This year, the Fair received a first place Agricultural Award of Excellence in the Program Designed to Correct an Issue or Problem Related to a Competitive or Non-Competitive Agriculture Program for fairs under 100,000 in attendance for its “green” program replacing straw bedding with shavings which were then hauled off for bio-fuel after the fair.

“We are honored to have been recognized at this level for this program,” said Fair CEO Rebecca Desmond, crediting senior maintenance worker Mike Luiz with the idea for the new program. (more…)

Yreka Tourney Day 3 (4) front

For Etna Lady Lions and Mt. Shasta Bears see stories below

After beating the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears, 29-28, in the opening round of the Yreka Invitational on an Ashley Lemos 3-pointer, the Lady Miners struggled against Klamath Union, losing 55-41. In the game for third place, Yreka fell to Brookings 49-42, and had to settle for fourth place.

The Lady Miners jumped out to an 8-1 lead over Brookings via a 3-ball by Adriana Scala, a bucket by Jaylene Phillips, and a trey from Ashley Lemos.

However, Brookings came back to take the lead 13-10, at the end of the first quarter. The squads were tied 18-18 at the half.

Brookings took the lead for good, 23-20, early in the third quarter on a 3-pointer. The closest the Lady Miners would come from that point on was one point, when Scala completed a 3-point play the hard way, making the score 35-34. Brookings would go up by as many as nine points, 45-34, before winning 49-42. (more…)

Mt. Shasta v Central Valley (4) front

YREKA – The Mt. Shasta Bears took second place at the Yreka Invitational Tournament over the weekend, falling to the Central Valley Falcons in the championship game, 49-30.
The Bears reached the championship match by beating Yreka, 53-51, on an Eric Thelander buzzer-beater in overtime. Then, the Bears easily handled Del Norte 52-37 in a semi-final.

The championship game was the second time in less than a week the teams had met. Last Tuesday, Central Valley defeated the Bears 49-38 in overtime.

The championship game was a back and forth affair in the first half. The Falcons jumped to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. But, the Bears battled back to take a 14-11, by the start of the second quarter. (more…)

Etna v KU  (9)

svpt-small.jpgYREKA – The Etna Lady Lions met little resistance, as they ran the table at the Yreka Invitational last week. After cruising to victory over Weed, 51-32, in the first round and beating Brookings, 47-40, in a semi-final, Etna pounded Klamath Union, 58-34, for the championship.

Etna was first on the board in the championship game, when Emily Loogman put up three points the old fashion way. Klamath Union scored to make it 3-2, but Etna quickly pushed its lead to five points, 9-4. KU would move to within one at 9-8, but that was the last time the would catch even a glimmer of hope. Yreka Tourney Day 2 (10) front

The Etna Lady Lions moved to 3-0 on the season with a win over the Brookings Lady Bruins, propelling them to the Yreka Invitational Tournament championship game against Klamath Union at 4:30 on Saturday.

Etna trailed 18-14 after the first quarter, but outscored Brookings 14-2 in the second quarter to gain a 28-20 halftime advantage. At the end of three, Etna led 38-32.

The Lady Lions pushed their lead back to eight points, 40-32, when Paige Finley dished to Emily Loogman for a bucket early in the fourth quarter. Brookings scored the next five points to close the gap to 40-37, with 4:09 left to play. But, they would get no closer. (more…)

Yreka Invitational Day 1 (17) front

West CoastYreka 51 – Mt. Shasta 53 (OT)
The Miners versus Bears boys match up was easily the most exciting game of the first day. Yreka trailed 14-6 at the end of the first quarter and 25-14 at halftime. The Miners were down double digits for a large part of the first half. Yreka, however, battled back to take the lead.

The Bears led 32-28, when Miner Luke White nailed a 3-ball to close the gap to a single point, 32-21, with 25 seconds left in the third quarter. White came out smoking to start the fourth quarter, draining back-to-back 3-pointers to give Yreka the lead 37-32.

Mt. Shasta came back to tie the contest, 37-37, on a trey by Jake Padula, with 6:39 to go in regulation. A put back by Daniel Fisher regained the lead for the Miners, 39-37. Yreka held the lead until Bear Eric Thelander hit from behind the arc with 38 seconds left in the fourth quarter, tying the game 45-45 and sending the teams to overtime.

Tim Jaegel opened the OT with a 3-ball, giving the Bears the lead 48-45. Sarome Eng answered for the Miners, to make it at 48-48. A hoop by White put Yreka back in front 50-48, with 1:55 to go. The squads exchanged freebies, and then Gene Kenyon hit a bucket to tie it 51-51, with 30 seconds to play. (more…)

Etna v Happy Camp Var Boys (1) front

valley-tire-red-300.jpgETNA – The Happy Camp Indians boys basketball team was a definite underdog facing the Etna Lions in Tuesday’s season opener. After weathering an early run by the Lions, however, the Indians served notice that they came to play. Etna eventually prevailed 58-44, but Happy Camp put on an 3-point shooting exhibition that kept them in the game in the first half.

The Lions went up 6-0 to start the contest, via a Jarom Hiett put back and a pair of steal-n-scores by Brent Davis. Kevin Harrison put the Indians on the board with a bucket off a rebound, 6-2. Hoops by Hiett and Erik Anaya extended Etna’s lead to 10-2. A trey by Harrison made it 10-5. Anaya put three points on the board the old fashion way, 13-5. At the end of the first quarter, the Lions led 15-7, but not for long. (more…)

y-ad-1-click.jpgYREKA – The Yreka Lady Miner frosh won, 50-36, over the Eagle Point frosh, giving Paula Sarmento her first victory as the new freshmen girls coach. Yreka led after the 1st quarter 17-6, and never looked back with a comfortable 25- 9 halftime advantage.

Allison Charleboix led the Miner attack with a double-double, 18 points and 10 rebounds. Baylee Harris came up just short of the DD with 8 points and 10 boards.  Emily Andrus added 6 points and 8 rebounds, while Madison Williams also had 6 points.

The JV Lady Miners also were victorious, 42-23, outscoring Eagle Point 30 to 14 in the second half to salt away the win. Katie Brummett had 12 points, MacKenzie Allen and Dani Deegan both contributed 8 points, Krista Freeze had 6, and Eva Heintz picked up 9 rebounds. (more…)

Etna v Happy Camp Var Girls (10) front

Patterson CreekETNA – The Etna Lady Lions easily took care of business against the Happy Camp Lady Indians in both team’s season opener, on Tuesday night. Etna raced out to an 8-0 lead and controlled the game from start to finish.

Annaleisa Nadig started the scoring with a put back. Ilima Adams made it 4-0 with a steal-n-score. Back to back buckets by Paige Finley pushed the lead to 8-0. Happy Camp’s Daniella Sanchez broke the run with a bucket, 8-2. But, a pair of three balls by Tandy Thackeray started another scoring burst for the Lady Lions.

Amy Wyckoff hit a hoop for Happy Camp, but that was the last time the Indians would score until the last 15 seconds of the opening quarter. Thackeray hit another shot from beyond the arc, making it 17-4. A freebie by Abby Journey upped the lead to 18-4. Tilly McBroom nailed a jumper to make the score 20-4. A pair from the charity stripe by Renae Hall completed the 14-2 Etna run. (more…)

Etna v Happy Camp JV (19) Front

svpt-small.jpgETNA – The Happy Camp Indian JV boys opened their season with a 74-50 win over the Etna Lion JVs on Tuesday night. The Indians led 18-8 after the first quarter, 33-22 at the half, and 56-32 after three quarters.

Clayton Tuttle poured in 28 points for the Indians, including four 3-pointers. Charlie Reed scored 11 points, and Justin Wright had 10.
For Etna, Marc Federico scored 12 points. Nick Krauss had 11, and Charles Hawkins contributed 10 points.

In girls JV action, the Etna Lady Lions mounted a stunning comeback to defeat the Lady Indians, 46-34. Happy Camp dominated the first quarter and led 13-1 going into the second. At half time, the Lady Indians were still in command, 24-10. (more…)
