COS v Lassen (9) front

yac-300-b.jpgWEED – The College of the Siskiyous Eagles picked up their first Golden Valley Conference win, 92-77, over the Lassen Cougars on Saturday night.

The Eagles were leading 38-28 a little over midway through the first half, when they went on a 17-4 run to close out the half up 23 points, 55-32. It looked like the Eagles would enjoy a blow out win like the Lady Eagles had earlier in the evening. It didn’t happen.

Instead, the Eagles seemingly lost the ability to score when the second half began. Eight and a half minutes into the second stanza, the Eagles had only scored nine points, all by Gil Mathieu via six free throws and a 3-pointer.

Lassen, however, opened the second half on fire, whittling the COS lead down to four points, 79-75, with 3:12 left to go in the contest.

COS was on the ropes, desperately clinging to a diminishing lead. (more…)

West CoastWEED – It seems like every season another College of the Siskiyous Lady Eagles record is broken. The single game scoring record fell last season and the one before. On Saturday night, the single game 3-point record for an individual was broken by Dijana Topalovic, during a 113-86 rout of the Lassen College Lady Cougars (5-14, 0-3).

Topalovic’s run to the record, and the beginning of a COS’ score fest, began with one of the rarer plays in basketball—a 4-point play. The Lady Eagles were leading 9-6, when Topalovic nailed a 3-ball and was fouled. She converted the freebie to complete the 4-point play and extend COS’ lead to 13-6. It was just a preview of what was to come. (more…)

Yreka v Anderson Frosh JV Var (20) front

nsa-in-story.jpgYREKA – It’s been a tough season for the Yreka Lady Miners, with wins coming few and far between. But, despite losing to the Anderson Cubs on Friday night, the Lady Miners showed the ability to battle through adversity to mount a come back bid.

Yreka trailed by 13 points, 37-24, going into the fourth quarter, and lost point guard Adriana Scala to a Cub tomahawk chop on the arm early in the quarter. The injury to their teammate seemed to energize and motivate the Lady Miners, as they out scored Anderson 13-5 in the final frame, narrowly missing a come from behind win, 42-37.

Anderson broke out to a 5-0 lead to start the game. But, the Lady Miners came back to go up 10-8 on a 3-pointer by Ashley Lemos with 10 seconds left in the first quarter. Anderson answered at the buzzer with a 3-ball to give the Cubs an 11-10 lead going into the second quarter. (more…)

coffee-break-b.jpgThe Mount Shasta Bears got a much needed win in a close game Friday night, rallying in the fourth quarter to beat Fall River, 56-53, and tighten up the Shasta Cascade League race.

The Bears fell behind early, and looked out of rhythm as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-6 lead. But after coach Kirk Andrus called a timeout, the Bears responded with three buckets in the final two minutes of the period to claw within three points. The second quarter was just ugly, for both teams. Bad passes, bad shots, bad defense. Fall River outscored Mount Shasta 8-7 in the frame, and led 23-19 at the half.

“We needed to come out with some intensity after halftime, and we did,” Andrus said. “We needed guard play and we needed to show some heart. And we did both tonight.” (more…)

mittan-ad-300.jpgFor the Mount Shasta Lady bears, each game lately is like a microcosm of the season: a slow start, a recovery, and a strong finish. The formula worked again on Friday as the Bears dominated Fall River 56-44, sending the Lady Bulldogs to their first Shasta Cascade League loss in seven outings.

“Our defense set the tone again,” said coach Dan Hansen. “Then we hit a few shots, and they started falling. I’m pleased with the way we played tonight.”

Early on, the Lady Bears were in a funk. Passes were not crisp, defensive assignments were missed, shots were passed up. And, Fall River jumped out to quick 14-4 lead. Yarely Contreras pumped in 8 quick points for Fall River, scoring from the perimeter, the paint and the FT line. Teammate Kristi Cearley – who Hansen said was the one player they really needed to shut down – chipped in with 6, and things looked rough for the home team. But the Bears never panicked. Jeana Michels and Kismet Prosper both found the range from 3-point land, cutting the lead to just four points after a quarter, and the Bears were on their way. (more…)

Etna v Lost River (10) front

Junior varsity cruises to 55-29 win

valley-tire-red-300.jpgETNA – Playing their third game in as many nights, they Etna Lady Lions needed to dig deep to find the strength for a late fourth quarter push to repel the invading Lost River Raiders, 60-45, on Thursday night.

Coming off back to back wins on consecutive nights against Shasta Cascade League foes Burney and Trinity, the Lady Lions actually seemed the fresher of the two teams in the first quarter. Etna’s full court pressure defense caused several turnovers, which led to easy buckets.

Lost River led 6-5, when Etna’s higher intensity level began to take its toll on the Lady Raiders. A steal by Emily Loogman and pass to Annaleisa Nadig for a hoop gave Etna a 7-6 lead, and started a 12-0 run that spanned the later portion of the first quarter and the start of the second. Another bucket by Nadig, a Nadig freebie, and a Nadig put back, pushed the Lady Lion lead to 12-6. Paige Finley made a free throw, and Etna led 13-6 at the end of one quarter. (more…)
