WEED – The College of the Siskiyous Eagles picked up their first Golden Valley Conference win, 92-77, over the Lassen Cougars on Saturday night.
The Eagles were leading 38-28 a little over midway through the first half, when they went on a 17-4 run to close out the half up 23 points, 55-32. It looked like the Eagles would enjoy a blow out win like the Lady Eagles had earlier in the evening. It didn’t happen.
Instead, the Eagles seemingly lost the ability to score when the second half began. Eight and a half minutes into the second stanza, the Eagles had only scored nine points, all by Gil Mathieu via six free throws and a 3-pointer.
Lassen, however, opened the second half on fire, whittling the COS lead down to four points, 79-75, with 3:12 left to go in the contest.
COS was on the ropes, desperately clinging to a diminishing lead. (more…)

WEED – It seems like every season another College of the Siskiyous Lady Eagles record is broken. The single game scoring record fell last season and the one before. On Saturday night, the single game 3-point record for an individual was broken by Dijana Topalovic, during a 113-86 rout of the Lassen College Lady Cougars (5-14, 0-3).
Topalovic’s run to the record, and the beginning of a COS’ score fest, began with one of the rarer plays in basketball—a 4-point play. The Lady Eagles were leading 9-6, when Topalovic nailed a 3-ball and was fouled. She converted the freebie to complete the 4-point play and extend COS’ lead to 13-6. It was just a preview of what was to come. (more…)

YREKA – It’s been a tough season for the Yreka Lady Miners, with wins coming few and far between. But, despite losing to the Anderson Cubs on Friday night, the Lady Miners showed the ability to battle through adversity to mount a come back bid.
Yreka trailed by 13 points, 37-24, going into the fourth quarter, and lost point guard Adriana Scala to a Cub tomahawk chop on the arm early in the quarter. The injury to their teammate seemed to energize and motivate the Lady Miners, as they out scored Anderson 13-5 in the final frame, narrowly missing a come from behind win, 42-37.
Anderson broke out to a 5-0 lead to start the game. But, the Lady Miners came back to go up 10-8 on a 3-pointer by Ashley Lemos with 10 seconds left in the first quarter. Anderson answered at the buzzer with a 3-ball to give the Cubs an 11-10 lead going into the second quarter. (more…)

The Mount Shasta Bears got a much needed win in a close game Friday night, rallying in the fourth quarter to beat Fall River, 56-53, and tighten up the Shasta Cascade League race.
The Bears fell behind early, and looked out of rhythm as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-6 lead. But after coach Kirk Andrus called a timeout, the Bears responded with three buckets in the final two minutes of the period to claw within three points. The second quarter was just ugly, for both teams. Bad passes, bad shots, bad defense. Fall River outscored Mount Shasta 8-7 in the frame, and led 23-19 at the half.
“We needed to come out with some intensity after halftime, and we did,” Andrus said. “We needed guard play and we needed to show some heart. And we did both tonight.” (more…)

For the Mount Shasta Lady bears, each game lately is like a microcosm of the season: a slow start, a recovery, and a strong finish. The formula worked again on Friday as the Bears dominated Fall River 56-44, sending the Lady Bulldogs to their first Shasta Cascade League loss in seven outings.
“Our defense set the tone again,” said coach Dan Hansen. “Then we hit a few shots, and they started falling. I’m pleased with the way we played tonight.”
Early on, the Lady Bears were in a funk. Passes were not crisp, defensive assignments were missed, shots were passed up. And, Fall River jumped out to quick 14-4 lead. Yarely Contreras pumped in 8 quick points for Fall River, scoring from the perimeter, the paint and the FT line. Teammate Kristi Cearley – who Hansen said was the one player they really needed to shut down – chipped in with 6, and things looked rough for the home team. But the Bears never panicked. Jeana Michels and Kismet Prosper both found the range from 3-point land, cutting the lead to just four points after a quarter, and the Bears were on their way. (more…)

Junior varsity cruises to 55-29 win
ETNA – Playing their third game in as many nights, they Etna Lady Lions needed to dig deep to find the strength for a late fourth quarter push to repel the invading Lost River Raiders, 60-45, on Thursday night.
Coming off back to back wins on consecutive nights against Shasta Cascade League foes Burney and Trinity, the Lady Lions actually seemed the fresher of the two teams in the first quarter. Etna’s full court pressure defense caused several turnovers, which led to easy buckets.
Lost River led 6-5, when Etna’s higher intensity level began to take its toll on the Lady Raiders. A steal by Emily Loogman and pass to Annaleisa Nadig for a hoop gave Etna a 7-6 lead, and started a 12-0 run that spanned the later portion of the first quarter and the start of the second. Another bucket by Nadig, a Nadig freebie, and a Nadig put back, pushed the Lady Lion lead to 12-6. Paige Finley made a free throw, and Etna led 13-6 at the end of one quarter. (more…)

Junior varsity comes up short, 57-47
ETNA – The Etna Lions welcomed back star player Ryan Hicks this week from a football injury. On Thursday night, Hicks returned to last season’s form, dropping 25 points on the Lost River Raiders in Etna’s 74-59 win.
While the Lions, playing their third game in three nights, eventually won by a comfortable margin, it was the Raiders that enjoyed an early lead. Etna scored off the opening jump, with Jarom Hiett tipping the ball to Erik Anaya, who connected with a streaking Brent Davis for an easy lay up. Lost River, however, went on a 9-2 run to lead 9-4, with 5:00 minutes to play in the first quarter.
Hicks entered the game at the 3:57 mark, with Lost River leading 11-6, and promptly buried a jumper, starting a 12-4 Lion run. Hiett added two from the charity stripe, to close the gap to a single point, 11-10. Davis drove the lane for a bucket giving Etna the lead, 12-11. Two Raider free throws put them back in front, 13-12. A hoop from Clint Eastlick, with 1:10 on the clock, gave Etna a 14-13 advantage. The Lions would lead for the remainder of the game. Eastlick upped the lead to 16-13 on sweet spin move in the paint. Davis connected with Anaya on a break away, giving Etna an 18-13 lead. Lost River scored just before the buzzer, to make it 18-15 going into the second quarter. (more…)

DORRIS – The Butte Valley Bulldogs won both the varsity and junior varsity games against the visiting Dunsmuir Tigers, on Wednesday night. The Bulldog varsity prevailed 60-49, and the JVs won 53-39.
In the varsity game, the Bulldogs never trailed. Late in the first quarter, the score was tied 9-9, when Steven Berengue sandwiched 3-balls around a Tiger hoop by Lt Hisey, to put Butte Valley up 15-11 going into the second quarter.
Berengue also scored the first two baskets of the second quarter to up the Bulldogs lead to eight points, 19-11. However, the Tigers came roaring back to close to within a single bucket. (more…)

MOUNT SHASTA – Perhaps the most remarkable part of the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears, 38-27, win over the Weed Lady Cougars on Tuesday night was the first quarter score, 7-5.
The game was tied 2-2 with over three minutes gone in the opening quarter. Kera Vogel put Weed up for the only time in the contest, 4-2, with 2:55 to play. A 3-ball by Lady Bear Amanda Amesbury made it 7-4, and Jessica Garner hit a freebie for Weed to bring score to 7-5 at the end of one.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with Mt. Shasta outscoring Weed, 8-5, to lead 15-10 at the half (yes, really). (more…)

MOUNT SHASTA – For the non believers, it’s time accept it. The Weed Cougars are for real. While it’s certainly not over, the Cougars took a giant step towards securing the Shasta Cascade League title with a come from behind 48-47 win over the defending champion Mt. Shasta Bears on Tuesday night. And, they did it in the Bears’ own house. Not surprisingly, it was Cougar Jake West that hit a free throw with 18 seconds to play to seal the deal–something he seems to have a habit of doing.
The Bears looked like they might make a “we’re still the champs” statement against the Cougars, opening the game with an 8-2 run, but the Cougars made a statement of their own, battling back to trail by a single basket at the end of the first quarter, 14-12. (more…)
