Auditions scheduled for COS spring production of The Imaginary Invalid
Posted by Ray Wolf under Academics , COS
WEED – Free health care is what the main character, Argon, desires in Moliere’s The Imaginary Invalid– don’t we all! Argon wants it enough though to try and force his daughter to marry a doctor which results in some hilarious consequences. This is a modern adaptation of Moliere by James Macgruder. It is a marvelous version that retains some of the fun dancing and singing interludes of the original written over 300 years ago.
Director Tom Murdock said he chose to do Invalid after re-reading it over the summer and became intrigued with its relevance to today’s headlines. Though written in the17th century the material is as fresh as ever. If you have ever thought about getting involved in a COS Main Stage production, and you have your evenings free this spring, this would be the one to audition for. (more…)

ETNA – If there was ever a game that was over as soon as it started, it might have been the match up Friday night between the Etna Lady Lions varsity and the Modoc Lady Braves (0-13, 0-5). Etna hammered Modoc for 23 straight points to open the contest, and never looked back on the way to a 70-28 win. The Etna junior varsity had a tougher time, but also won, 36-33.
Emily Loogman started the score-fest for the Lady Lions varsity with a 3-point play the hard way. Paige Finley hit a shot, 5-0. Loogman buried a trey, 8-0. Loogman came up with a swipe, passed to Finley, who fed Tandy Thackeray for an uncontested lay up, 10-0. Etna’s full court pressure created several turnovers in the first quarter, leading to easy hoops.
After her lay up, Thackeray drained back-to-back 3-balls, and added a pair of freebies, upping Etna’s lead to 18-0. A steal-n-score by Loogman, made it 20-0. A free throw by Finley, and two by Annaleisa Nadig, completed the 23-0 run. At the end of the first quarter, it was Etna 23-Modoc 9. (more…)

Brent Davis drained the first of his four treys in the game, 7-2. Davis caused a Modoc turnover, Menne scooped up the loose ball and fed Anaya for a lay up, 9-2. Anaya set up Davis for a hoop, 11-2. Independent Livestock Exhibitor packets ready at Siskiyou Golden Fair
Posted by Ray Wolf under General
YREKA – Packets and record books for junior livestock exhibitors showing as independents at the 2010 Siskiyou Golden Fair are ready to be picked up at the fair office.
An independent exhibitor is someone who does not show livestock at the fair through an organized club such as 4-H, FFA or Grange. Independent exhibitors are required to attend meetings, perform one community service, and maintain record books regarding their livestock projects. These requirements apply to independent exhibitors showing market animals, not breeding projects. (more…)

I really try to stay away from politics on Siskiyou Youth, but the Supreme Court today struck a blow against democracy that can not be ignored. What it did is greatly increase the ability of corporations to buy politicians and push through agendas that are to the benefit of the corporate bottom line. What is best for corporations is often bad for We the People.
Here’s a link to a news article about the decision: http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20100121/pl_politico/31786
For those of you who don’t know, long before I did sports I was highly engaged in politics. Below is an article on corporate person-hood that I wrote a few years ago. It pretty well out lines how corporations came to be people with rights equal to humans.
I feel that this is a subject that history and government teachers should spend ample time on in class the next few days, regardless of their personal opinion of it. It isn’t often that there is such a game-changing ruling happening in real time that can be used to teach about democracy, or threats to its continuing existence. (more…)

WEED – The College of the Siskiyous Foundation announces scholarship applications for 2010/2011 are now available. Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors planning to enter COS in the fall following high school graduation, single parents striving for self-sufficiency, young students supporting themselves while continuing their education, and continuing COS students. Scholarships range from $100 to $3,000. (more…)

Siskiyou Golden Fair to hold Junior Livestock seminar: “How to get to Auction the “Right Way”
Posted by Ray Wolf under General
YREKA – Calling all Siskiyou Golden Fair junior livestock exhibitors! Here’s your chance to get a lot of education in a little bit of time regarding the raising and feeding of your fair project animal.
On February 11, the Siskiyou Golden Fair will present “How to Get to Auction—the Right Way.” This program will include a presentation from award winning livestock judge and Nutrena Feed representative Frank Ward, new rules for the 2010 fair, and will count as quality assurance training. The program is designed for all junior livestock exhibitors, parents and leaders. Attendees can also get information about the Siskiyou’s Golden Beef Jackpot show scheduled for May 7-9.
“We are very excited to bring this program to our junior livestock exhibitors,” said fair CEO Rebecca Desmond. “There is so much to learn about the proper way to raise and care for project animals and we want to help the junior exhibitors as much as possible.” (more…)

It’s not hard to find players that can put up big numbers playing on winning teams that dominate opponents. And, lots of players can put up big numbers against weak opponents. It is much rarer to find a player who plays on a team that doesn’t have many wins, yet he consistently performs against both the good and the bad teams. One of those players is Yreka Miner Daniel Fisher.
Fisher had a slow start this season, scoring minimal points in the first four games. Then, in the fifth game against Henley, he scored 14 points. He has been in double figures every game since, except one. He scored eight points in Yreka’s 53-39 win over Bonanza.
Fisher leads Yreka in both scoring (13.9 ppg) and rebounding (8.3 rpg). He is second in the Northern Athletic League in rebounding and third in scoring, on a team that is 5-11 overall.
Those stats alone might be good enough to earn an Impact Player Award. However, what sealed the award for Fisher was his overtime performance in Yreka’s 63-59 win over Lassen last Friday night.
Fisher scored the first eight points of the third OT period, and eight of nine Yreka points in the period. At one point, he led Lassen 8-0 in the third OT. What’s more impressive is how he scored.
The points didn’t come on clean breakaways. They didn’t come by standing outside the arc and waiting to hit a 3-pointer. Nope, they were mostly down and dirty working man’s points in the paint. Of the eight points in the third OT, four came on put backs and three came via a 3-point play the hard way. The other was on a freebie. (more…)

WEED – The College of the Siskiyous Eagles appeared to be toast, trailing 73-63, with just over two minutes to play. But, the Butte College Roadrunners were a bit early in breaking out the butter.
While Butte was acting like the game was over, COS mounted a comeback charge, tying the game at 76-76, before succumbing 77-76. Although the Eagle comeback bid fell short, it proved to be an exciting end to an otherwise ragged game.
The Eagles, who beat Butte in the preseason, 78-63, appeared to be on their way to another win, when they jumped out to a 10-2 lead to open the game. Luke Cassedy dished to former Central Valley Falcon teammate Dylan Griffin for a bucket. After Butte scored, Bronson Damen sandwiched two treys around a Cassedy hoop, to put COS up 10-2. (more…)
