Jake WestJake West leads the Shasta Cascade League leading Weed Cougars in assists and rebounds, and averages nearly 10 points per game. But, those stats are not why Jake West received an Impact Player Award.

West’s impact on the success of the Cougars can’t be measured with stats. There is no statistical category for basketball savvy—knowing what to to do, when to do it, and how. There is also no stat category for clutch plays—no category for game-winning or game-tying plays.

Twice this season, West has brought his Cougars from the brink of defeat to victory in the final seconds of the game.

Against Trinity, trailing 45-44, West drove the lane for a basket with four seconds on the clock, giving the Cougars the win, 46-45. When the first option on the game-winning play wasn’t open, West knew exactly what to do. There was no panic, no rush—just ice-water in the veins.

y-ad-1-click.jpgAfter the game, West didn’t give a canned response to questions. Instead he gave a detailed description of what the coach wanted on the play, how the play unfolded, and why he did what he did. It was obvious he knows the game.

Of course, that West has a high level of basketball sense should come as no surprise. Gramps is Mike “Silver Fox” Carpine, Weed’s head basketball coach. Mom, Alisa Cummings, coaches at Weed Elementary. His pop, Bobby West, has also spent considerable time as a coach. You could say basketball savvy is in West’s genes. (more…)

COS v Butte Women's B-Ball (1) front

West CoastWEED – The College of the Siskiyous Lady Eagles moved to 2-0 in Golden Valley Conference play, with an 82-68 win over the Butte College Roadrunners on Saturday night. The Eagles found themselves in a strange place on their home court in the first half. Not only was the game close, COS briefly trailed—something that rarely happens to the Lady Eagles at home.

About five minutes into the contest, Butte held a 14-8 lead. Lady Eagle Cassidy Hammon nailed a 3-ball to bring COS within a hoop. Michelle Hoen took a dish from Amber Franco and served up a 3-point play the hard way, to knot the score at 14-14. A freebie by Hammon put COS on top 15-14.

Butte took the lead again, 25-23, with 7:03 left in the first half. Alanna Stevens set up Hoehn for bucket to tie it 25-25. COS went up 28-25, when Hammon hit from downtown. With the score tied, 31-31, Natalie Smith dropped a trey on the Roadrunners to give the Lady Eagles a 34-31 lead—a lead they would not relinquish. Hoehn finished off the first half scoring with a hoop, making it COS 36 – Butte 31 at the intermission. (more…)

sis-dist-ad-300.jpgMOUNT SHASTA – The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears cruised to their third straight Shasta Cascade League win Friday night, blasting visiting Burney 57-32. Taylor Hansen led the Bears with 16, while Kismet Prosper chipped in with 13, and freshman Janelle Jaegel came off the bench to score her season-high 11 points.

Mount Shasta came out firing, with Hansen and Amanda Amesbury burying three-point shots in the first four minutes to stake the Bears to a 15-2 lead. Prosper consistently drove to the basket for easy looks as well, adding six first quarter points. Burney found its offense in the second quarter, as Hannah Rogers scored six of the Raiders’ ten points. But the Bears matched them basket for basket, and then some to extend the lead. Hansen hit two more threes in the period and had 11 points for the half as Mount Shasta opened up a 27-12 lead at intermission. (more…)

scm-ad.jpgYREKA – The Yreka Miner junior varsity went on a 15-3 run at the start of the fourth quarter to overcome a 3-point deficit, and defeat the Lassen Grizzlies, 51-47, last Friday night at Miner Gym.

After leading the Grizzlies 21-16 at the half, the Miners found themselves trailing 38-35 going into the final frame. However, the Lassen lead didn’t last long.

Yreka’s Eric Neill started the fourth quarter run with a bucket, making it a 1-point contest, 38-37. Ryan Kennedy powered his way to the basket to give Yreka the lead, 39-38. Lassen came back with a 3-ball to temporarily regain the advantage, 41-39. (more…)

mittan-ad-300.jpgYREKA – It took them almost a game and a half of playing time and a monster effort from Daniel Fisher in the third overtime period, but the Yreka Miners opened up their Northern Athletic League season with a win over the Lassen Grizzlies, 63-59, on Friday night.

After controlling the first three quarters of the game, Yreka gave up a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter. The squads entered the first overtime knotted at 45-45.

Lassen scored first to go up 47-45. The Miners tied it on a pair of freebies by Sarome Eng. The Grizzlies went up 49-47. A Daniel Fisher put back made it 49-49. Cole Humphrey gave Yreka the lead 51-49, with 43 seconds left in the period. Lassen sent the game to double overtime tied 51-51, with a bucket in the final half minute. (more…)

nsa-in-story.jpgAs officials, the two things we hear most from the stands and team benches is “three in the key” and on a rebound, “over the back.”

Three in the Key: rule 9-7

A player shall not remain in the area of the free throw lane between the end line and the further edge of the free throw line while the ball is in control of his/her team in the front court. That includes only one foot in that area. Allowance shall be made for a player who, having been in the restricted area for less than three seconds, dribbles in or moves for an immediate try for goal. valley-tire-red-300.jpgETNA – The Etna Lady Lions and Weed Cougars met in the second game of the season, with Etna cruising to a 51-32 victory. That was the last time that the Lady Cougars had all of their starters healthy for a game, until Tuesday night in Etna. With their full squad, the Lady Cougars took the defending Shasta Cascade League champions to overtime, before Etna prevailed 54-48.

There was no indication that an overtime thriller was even a remote possibility in the first few minutes. Etna raced to a 7-0 lead on baskets by Annaleisa Nadig, Paige Finley, and a 3-ball from Tandy Thackeray. (more…)

Etna v Weed (7) front

svpt-small.jpgETNA – For the second time in a week, the Weed Cougars needed a hero in the final seconds. For the second time in a week, Jake West delivered. The Cougars, with the ball, trailed the Etna Lions, 58-56, with 15.7 seconds to play in regulation.

As he did in the game a week earlier, Coach Mike Carpine called time out to set up a play—the same basic play that worked against Trinity. Again, the first option wasn’t available. Again, J. West took matters into his own hands, and drove to the bucket for the score. Against Trinity it was the game winner with four seconds left. Against Etna, with six seconds on the clock, the basket sent the game to overtime where the Cougars would win it, 67-62. (more…)
