Etna v Burney (10) front

mittan-ad-300.jpg

ETNA – The Etna Lions were eliminated from Shasta Cascade League title contention two weeks ago. Since then, the focus has been on improving their playoff ranking and gaining some momentum for the playoffs. They accomplished both over the past week, beating Modoc, 54-39, last Saturday, and taking out the Burney Raiders, 66-56, on Friday night.

With the wins, the Lions finished up the SCL season at 6-6, and are 12-13 overall—good enough for an 11-seed, and a trip to number-6 Tulelake (20-6) on Wednesday, February 24 at 7:00 pm.

The Lions had anything but momentum to start the contest against Burney, as they fell behind early, 11-6. However, with 2:35 left in the first quarter, Etna began to show signs of life. Ryan Hicks hit a turn-around jumper, 11-8. Hicks scored again with a helper from Erik Anaya, 11-10. After Burney added a freebie, Hicks tied it, 12-12, off another Anaya assist. Hicks’ third straight hoop, gave the Lions the lead 14-12, with 1:10 to go in the quarter. An Anaya put back made it 16-12. Etna led 16-14, going into the second quarter. (more…)

valley-tire-red-300.jpgETNA – The defending Shasta Cascade League champion Etna Lady Lions started the league season, 1-2. Since then, The Lady Lions have ripped off nine wins in a row, capped by a 66-35 thumping of the Burney Raiders on Friday night,to earn a share of the SCL crown. Etna shares the title with Mt. Shasta and Fall River, with records of 10-2. The three teams split with each other, all holding serve at home.

The contest with Burney was a “no-doubter, right from the start, with Etna jumping out to a 9-0 lead. Annaleisa Nadig made the first three hoops for Etna, giving the Lady Lions a 6-0 advantage. Tandy Thackeray came up with a steal and made it 9-0, on an old fashion 3-point play. (more…)

yac-300-b.jpgNo one ever said winning a league title was easy, so it was only fitting that the Mount Shasta Lady Bears had to claw and scratch their way to a share of the Shasta Cascade League title Friday night in Weed. The Bears earned a 36-30 win over the host Cougars, clinching their part of a three-way tie atop the SCL with Etna and Fall River.

The first half was ugly for both teams – particularly the Bears – who didn’t even manage a FG until late in the 2nd quarter against a tough Weed defense. Weed got the scoring started on a basket by Nicolette Neel just over two minutes into the game, and Sierra Skeen added a bucket a short time later for a 4-0 Cougar lead. Mount Shasta’s only points of the period followed – one free throw from Kismet Prosper, then two for Taylor Hansen. (more…)

coffee-break-b.jpgThe Mount Shasta Bears faced a long road a week and a half ago, needing to beat Trinity twice and Weed on the road to earn a share of the SCL championship. And even though it was a battle, coach Kirk Andrus never had any doubt about his team’s ability.

“We have some kids playing extraordinary basketball right now,” he said this week. “We just need to go play our game and take care of business.”

Mission accomplished. Friday night’s 55-52 OT thriller in Weed capped a three-game win streak down the stretch for the Bears, earning them a hard-fought share of the SCL championship. Gene Kenyon nailed a 3-pointer just before the buzzer in regulation, then put them ahead to stay with a layup in OT to deny the Cougars an outright league crown. (more…)

y-ad-1-click.jpgThe basketball regular season ends for Siskiyou County high school basketball teams on Friday night, and for the College of the Siskiyous on Saturday night. A lot is still to be decided in both league standings and playoff seedings. High school playoff seedings are announced on Saturday, and will be posted on SiskiyouYouth as soon as available.

Boys

Shasta Cascade League

The Weed Cougars already have at least a share of the SCL title. Mt. Shasta wants a piece, as well. The teams collide in Weed on Friday night. A Weed win means the Cougars (9-2) get to wear the crown solo. A Mt. Shasta (8-3) win means a shared crown. Weed is currently ranked 2nd in NSCIF D-V. Mt. Shasta is ranked 6th in NSCIF D-IV.

The Etna Lions have been eliminated from SCL title contention. The Lions are fighting for playoff positioning, and are currently ranked 13th in NSCIF D-V. A win against Burney, may push Etna as high as a 10 or 11-seed.

Evergreen League

Tulelake (9-0) has wrapped up the Evergreen League. The Honkers came into the week ranked eighth in NSCIF D-V.

Butte Valley (10), Happy Camp (11), and Dunsmuir (12) are looking to improve their playoff seedings in NSCIF D-VI. Happy Camp and Dunsmuir battle on Friday. the loser may miss the playoffs. (more…)

anzo-deer-crop.JPGWith the start of baseball and softball season less than a month away, it’s time to have Dale Anzo resume with the “Ask Anzo” feature.

By Dale Anzo

I’ll bet everyone that knows baseball and softball rules thinks they know what a catch is. Well, I beg to differ. Here is the rule as written in the rule book:

A catch is the act of a fielder in getting secure possession in his hand or glove of a live ball in flight and firmly holding it, provided he does not use his cap, protector, mask, pocket, or other part of his uniform to trap the ball. The catch of a fly ball by a fielder is not completed until the continuing action of the catch is completed. A fielder who catches a ball and then runs into a wall or another player and drops the ball has not made a catch. A fielder, at full speed who catches the ball and whose initial momentum carries him several more yards after which the ball drops from his glove has not made a catch. When the fielder by his action of stopping, removing the ball from his glove, etc. signifies the initial action is completed and then drops the ball, will be judged to have made a catch.

West CoastThe same definition of a catch would apply when making a double play. It is considered a catch if a fielder catches a fair or foul ball and then steps or falls into a bench, dugout, stand, bleacher, or over any boundary or barrier, such as a fence, rope, chalk line, or a pregame determined imaginary boundary line from the field of play. Falling into does include merely running against such object. It is not a catch when a fielder touches a batted ball in flight which then contacts a member of the offensive team or an umpire and is then caught by a defensive player. (more…)

Mt. Shasta v Trinity JV Girls (13) front

coffee-break-b.jpgMOUNT SHASTA – Shutout in the first quarter 9-0 by the Trinity Lady Wolves, the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears junior varsity appeared to be toast. However, before the Wolves had time to break out the butter, Mt. Shasta battled back to make it a one possession game, 16-14, at the intermission.

At the end of three quarters, the Wolves still led 30-26.

With a minute and a half gone in the final frame, Jeanette Ricci dished to Kiana Navarre for a hoop to knot the contest at 31-31—the first time Mt. Shasta hadn’t trailed since the start of the game. Trinity went back up by four points, 35-31. (more…)

Mt. Shasta v Trinity (12) front

sis-dist-ad-300.jpgMOUNT SHASTA – The Mt. Shasta Bears kept their hopes alive for a share of the Shasta Cascade League title by eliminating the Trinity Wolves from contention on Tuesday night. With the 75-58 win, the Bears (8-3) sit one game behind the Weed Cougars (9-2) in the SCL standings. The teams collide on Friday night in Weed. A Bear win would make Weed and Mt. Shasta co-champions. A win for Weed means an outright championship for the Cougars.

If you like your basketball action fast and furious, you would have loved the Mt. Shasta v Trinity match up. The Bears put up 23 points in the first quarter to lead 23-14 going into the second frame. Mt. Shasta trailed briefly 5-4 less than two minutes into the game. (more…)
