REDDING – Last weekend the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears and the Yreka Lady Miners met in the championship game of the Lady Miner Tournament, with Mt. Shasta emerging victorious, 6-0. This weekend, the teams battled at the Anderson Big Schools Tournament held at Big League Dreams, on Friday. The Lady Bears notched the win, 4-1, in the second game of pool play.
Mt. Shasta scratched across the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Sammy Reed led off with a walk. With one out, Natalie Hough singled, moving Reed to second base. A sacrifice bunt by Haley Brown moved both runners into scoring position at second and third base. Reed scored on a wild pitch, giving Mt. Shasta the lead, 1-0, after two innings.
Yreka evened the contest in the top of the fourth inning. Beth Franklin led off with a base hit. A bunt single from Erika Kimball moved Franklin to second base. Adriana Scala bunted for a base hit, loading the bases. A bloop infield single by Tianna Cruz plated Franklin, tying the game, 1-1, with the bases still jammed. Mt. Shasta escaped the inning with help from a 5-2-3 double play. After the double play, there were still runners on second and third, but the next Yreka batter grounded out, ending the threat. (more…)

Hey folks, there’s a group of young ladies in Mt. Shasta that are in need of a coach so they can play softball this summer. Apparently, there are several people who can assist, but no head coach. The girls will be playing 10-15 games against teams from around the county, including another Mt. Shasta team, a team from Weed, and teams from Yreka and the Scott Valley. The season runs from now, until mid June.
The team is connected to South Siskiyou Little League, but is Softball. To step up to the plate, contact John Kennedy at the Sportsmen’s Den at 926-2295, or directly at 859-1844. (more…)

Then Molly Greenfield made contact and reached base on an error, Martin scored for the Miners only run. Greenfield produced the only other hit for the Miners, but was stranded on base. YREKA – The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears won the Lady Miner Softball Tournament in impressive fashion over the weekend, capped by a 6-0 shutout of Yreka in the championship game. The Lady Bears also avenged a loss to Etna in the championship of the Anderson Cub Classic the prior weekend, when they beat Etna 10-1 in the semi-finals of the Lady Miner Tourney. Mt. Shasta rolled over Ashland, 6-2, and La Salle, 6-3, in its first two games of the tourney on Friday.
Yreka’s road to the final was a bit rougher. After beating Hidden Valley, 11-2, to open the tournament, the Lady Miners fell to eventual third place finisher Etna, 9-8, in eight innings. Yreka then had to battle through the loser’s bracket on Saturday. In the morning they beat Ashland 7-1 and Del Norte 10-4. Then, the Lady Miners eliminated Etna, 6-4, to reach the championship game.
Saturday’s championship game was scoreless through the first three and a half innings, but the Lady Bears warmed up the bats in the bottom of the fourth…with a little help from Yreka to get things started. (more…)
