YREKA – The Yreka Miners staged a tremendous comeback effort against the defending section champion Central Valley Falcons on Thursday. The Miners found themselves in a 7-0 hole after the first half inning.
Then it rained, and rained some more, leading to about a 20 minute rain delay. The downpour apparently washed away whatever funk the Miners were in, as they came back to tie the contest, 8-8, before losing 10-8.
The Falcons took advantage of three walks, two hit batters, and a couple of hits in the first inning to grab the 7-0 lead.
After the rain delay, the Miners put a run on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Taylor Barlow led off with a walk. Josh Lee reached on an error, and Barlow went to third base. A passed ball allowed Barlow to score. (more…)

Local high school graduates and former Siskiyou Heat ASA softball players Sarah Jones, Kaitlin Weckerle, Kelsie Moser, and Amber Sinnott are having success playing at their respective college programs.
Jones is playing for Bethany University of the California Pacific Conference. Jones played third base and catcher for YHS and for the Heat. She has had to step in at the catcher spot for the Bruins and has done such a good job it could be her new position at the college level. Currently, Jones is batting .314 and is amongst the team leaders in RBI. Her fielding percentage is .889.
Weckerle, Moser, and Sinnott are playing for the Mendocino College Eagles, in the Bay Valley Conference. Weckerle is in her second year and has been the Eagles’ lead off hitter and center fielder for both years. She has continued to play great defense in center field like she did for YHS. Her speed on the bases is still a big part of her game, with 18 stolen bases on the year. She is batting .331 with 11 RBI. (more…)

MOUNT SHASTA – After enduring several rain/snow outs, the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears softball team came out a bit rusty against the Weed Lady Cougars. That, however, did not stop them from sweeping the double header on Monday, 4-1 and 10-0.
One Lady Bear that didn’t look rusty was Tori Weatherford who went yard in her first at bat. The Lady Bears added two more runs in the bottom of the first inning via a Kayla Spini single, a walk to Sammy Reed, a steal, and a couple of wild pitches. Mt. Shasta led 3-0 at the end of one inning. (more…)

YREKA – The Yreka Miners handed the Central Valley Falcons their first loss of the season last Thursday in a 5-4 decision. The teams played doubles first, with CV taking two of three matches.
Then the singles matches got under way, and the tide turned for the Miners. The Miners won the top four singles matches, clinching the dual match-up with that magic number of five. Austin Kische dominated his number-1 singles match, as did Niraj Khalasi at number-3. Jared Larsen (4) came back from a second set loss to win his match in a super-tiebreaker situation. Finally, Chiraag Khalasi had to dig very deep at number-2 to win his match. He was down 0-4 in the second set, but brought the set back to a tie-breaker at 6-6. After going down 0-5 in the tie-breaker he rattled off seven unanswered points to win the set and the match. Suddenly the Miners had won five matches. (And our number-7 James Airhart is still undefeated in league, winning his exhibition match 8-2.)
“I couldn’t believe it,” said Miner Coach Mark Freudenburg. “It was a great feeling to pull those close matches out and beat such a good team.” (more…)
