College of the Siskiyous will offer a brand-new camp designed especially for youth ages 10 to 17 who are interested in learning about the Spanish culture. Two, week-long immersion camps have been scheduled where students will participate in fun and interactive activities including games, art, dance, and cooking. The instructor for the Spanish Immersion Camps is Guadalupe “Pita” Jimenez, who has taught language, dance, and art classes to young students in Mexico and California. (more…)

Cricket Postma and her horse, Dillon, competed at the Oregon Quarter Horse Association Summer Classic in Central Point, Ore last week. The pair came home with Reserve Champion in the Novice Youth Reining division.
The prior weekend, Cricket and Dillon took 1st in the National Reining Horse Association Youth Class at an OQHA competition held in Central Point.
Cricket, who will be a sophomore at Etna High School this fall, is also preparing to head to the American Quarter Horse Association Youth World Reining Championships in Oklahoma City this July and August. (more…)

YREKA – The Siskiyou Jaxx Senior Babe Ruth baseball team played the scoreboard like a pinball machine, scoring 25 runs in its double header sweep of some team from Klamath Falls. No one, including the players and coaches of the K-Falls squad, seemed to know the team’s name, but they wear orange uniforms. So, “Orange” it is.
In his first game back at Hibbard Field since starring for the Yreka Miners in high school, Andrew Ward tossed a 2-hit, 2-walk complete game shutout, fanning 13 Orange batters. (more…)

The 2010 SharkFest Swim Meet was held at the Scott Valley Community Pool in Etna on Saturday and Sunday. Leading the way for the locals were Scott Valley Swim Team’s Katie Eiler who finished 1st in the 15-16 year old age group, and Yreka’s Kaitlyn Solano who was first in the 11-12 year old group.
In the team competition, the Scott Valley Sharks finished third with 614.50 points. Yreka was fifth (401), and the Weed Swim Club was seventh (88). The Anderson Aquagators took first with 1283.50 points. (more…)

County fair exhibits are the heart of what fairs are all about, and the Siskiyou Golden Fair is no different.
This year the Siskiyou Golden Fair Exhibitor Handbook has over 350 divisions with more than 2,200 classes for senior and junior exhibitors. From prize livestock to photography, sewing, gardening or baking, the fair is where Siskiyou County residents get to show off their talents.
“We have many folks who have been entering the fair since they were children and have continued into their 70s and 80s” said Fair CEO Cliff Munson. “In fact, the Howard Trivelpiece Ag-Hort Building, named after Trivelpiece in 2008 during his 80th year as an exhibitor could once again be sporting some of the 98-years-young Trivelpiece’s vegetable crop in 2010.” (more…)

Siskiyou County residents Sydney Cox, Ashley Cross, Kayla Spini, and Tori Weatherford are headed to the ASA Softball National Championships.
Cross and Cox play for the U-10 North Valley Rapids from Redding. Cross is the catcher and Cox plays shortstop. The Rapids placed second at The Nor Cal ASA Championships in Sunnyvale last weekend, qualifying them for the Nationals in Chattanooga, Tennessee and the Western Nationals in Medford, Oregon. The Rapids will be playing in the Western Nationals in August. (more…)

The Siskiyou Jaxx Senior Babe Ruth team swept through the Brookings Tournament of Champions last weekend, going 4-0 to claim the crown.
The Jaxx beat Crater Lake 14-2, Del Norte 15-3, Brookings 13-9, to get to the championship game against Crater Lake. The Jaxx beat Crater Lake in the Championship game, 14-3. (more…)

The Yreka Swim Team and the Scott Valley Sharks opened their swim season at the Weaverville Waves Invitational Swim Meet. Over 200 athletes competed at the meet last weekend.
The Yreka Swim Team finished fourth with 290.5 points, and Scott Valley was 7th with 114 points.
Top three finishers:
17-18 Girls – Sarah Gross (YST), 1st, 36 pts.
15-16 girls – Katie Eiler (SV), 2nd, 41 pts; Rebecca Gross (YST), 3rd, 32 pts
11-12 Girls – Kaitlyn Solano (YST), 1st, 34 pts.

The D-Rays and the Cardinals came into Monday night’s game in Weed undefeated in the South Siskiyou Little League Majors round robin tournament. Both squads had already beaten the Mets and the Rangers.
With the post season championship on the line, D-Ray starting and winning pitcher Joey Spini was almost perfect through the first five innings before being relieved due to pitch count. Spini struck out 13 Cardinals, while allowing only one hit and one earned run. (more…)

Siskiyou County residents Daniel Ferreira from Forts Jones and C.J. Cash from Grenada qualified for Nationals at the California High School Rodeo Association’s State Championships held in Bishop last week.
Ferreira finished second in Steer Wrestling. Cash and Jordan Spears of Redding finished 4th in Team Roping to qualify. Spears also qualified in Bareback (2nd) and Bull Riding (4th). (more…)
