The Siskiyou Heat U-10s traveled south to play the Redding Rebels. The Rebels, showing their experience and excellent pitching, defeated the Heat. The game was called because of a time limit after the Heat’s Lily Hitchcock scored their first run following a single and several stolen bases. (more…)

mittan-ad-300.jpgThe Media Communications program at College of the Siskiyous is designed to prepare students for entry level employment in the Broadcast Television, Cable Television, and Independent Video industries. Television and video are a force uniquely important in today’s multi-media society. Media technology is evolving rapidly which opens up many opportunities for employment. This curriculum also academically prepares students for baccalaureate programs at four-year universities.

Only a few California Community Colleges offer an opportunity for a degree program in this growing field. The Media Communications major opens the door to many career opportunities in film, radio, television, and other broadcast media. Most of these careers require a certificate of achievement or an associate degree, some require a bachelor’s degree, and a few require a graduate-level degree. Possible career options include television producer, studio manager, studio technician, studio engineer, station manager, director, director of photography, director of engineering, casting director, sports director, TV/radio announcer, technical director, camera operator, grip, boom operator, film/video technician, editor, editing machine operator, continuity and script editor, special effects technician, production designer, scriptwriter, news writer, video/film lab technician, video recording engineer, director of advertising, director of research. Tickets are now on sale for the 2nd annual 10th District Junior Livestock Auction Buyer’s Appreciation Dinner. The dinner will be held Saturday, July 31 at the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds.

The dinner gives the Junior Livestock Auction Committee members and Junior Livestock Exhibitors a chance to thank the 2009 auction supporters. Returning and new buyers can sign up for the 2010 auction and receive their buyer’s number. This is also a great chance for 4-H, FFA and Independent livestock exhibitors to meet potential buyers. This year’s Siskiyou Heat U-18 team is composed of returning players Bethany Franklin (pitcher/infielder) and Lizzy Stone (2nd base) from Yreka. From Weed we have Sierra Skeen, (shortstop/catcher) and Madison “Maddy” Moser (right field). From Etna, there’s Teal Rimmer (left field), and from Tulelake Michelle Rupert (third base/pitcher).

This year’s team also has a strong group of new players to the ASA program from Etna, including Jennifer Hanes (centerfield/catcher), Rhyan Smith (first base/outfield), Melissa Berry (first base/catcher), Rachel Lyons (outfield/pitcher). From Tulelake we have Alexandria “Lexi” Greenbank, (first base/outfield).

The U-18s have been developing with games on Wednesday evenings in Redding. Coaches Mike Jones and Nick Sinnott have been moving players around to find the best team combination.

The team spirit has been good and each player has responded well to the changes.

The Heat recently played in the Junction City, Ore. Cooper the Dog tournament with the other Siskiyou Heat age groups (U-10 and U-14). (more…)

After losing a pair of games on Saturday, the Siskiyou Heat U-14s battled their way through the Consolation bracket at the Western World Series in Newburg, Ore. on Sunday to bring home the consolation prize.

The Heat were down 5-3 against Vancouver, Washington Faith (different than the Faith team they played earlier in the tourney) going into the final inning, but scored three runs to win, 6-5. Audali Avila had the game-winning RBI, Amber Andrighetto scored the winning run. Lacie Landrum scored the tying run. Jeni Cheffey, who came on in relief for starting pitcher Riva Martin, notched the win.

The Heat started their march through the bracket with a thumping of the Staton Sparks, 9-0, on Sunday morning. The Heat rapped out 11 hits, and only allowed one Sparks base-runner to advance as far as third base.

Among the highlights was a “great catch” in deep center field, and throw to third base for a double play by Jasmin Bingham, according to Coach Rick Landrum.

yac-300-b.jpgCasey Meroshnekoff from Red Bluff won the Bareback Riding competition (245)  at the National High School Rodeo Championship held in Gillette, Wyoming this week.

A strong final ride (81) in the Championship Performance moved Redding’s Jordan Spears from 6th to 3rd place in Bull Riding (218). Spears finished 7th in the All-Around Cowboy competition.

Daniel Ferreira from Fort Jones made the cut after the first two go-rounds (top 20) to compete in the Championship Performance in Steer Wrestling. Ferreira finished 14th overall. (more…)

The Siskiyou Heat U-18 girls ASA softball team beat Grants Pass, 4-3, and then smoked Excaliber, 9-1, today in Grants Pass.

West CoastThe Siskiyou Heat U10 team traveled to Redding on July 22 to meet the Chico Starz in a double header. The Heat lost both games, but not without pushing the Starz to bring in their best pitcher to put the games away.

The Heat’s bats again improved. Kacey Cain and Isabella Powers got their first competitive league hits joined by Lily Hitchcock and Quincie Cross to put pressure on the Starz.

After the game Heat Coach Sara Jones said, “I am proud of the girls. I give them credit for playing against older and more experienced girls and for playing with only eight players.” (more…)

This fall, College of the Siskiyous will offer Computer Software (CSCI 34/ #7280) at the Weed Campus. The class will meet Thursday evenings beginning August 19 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm in Temp Building 30, room 102, and will continue to meet weekly until December 16, 2010. Mike Midkiff is the instructor.

The course has been designed for students who wish to prepare for taking the CompTIA A+ Core Software Exam for computer service technicians as well as students who wish to learn how to install, maintain, manage, troubleshoot, and/or upgrade their own computer system software. It is also one of five classes required for the Computer Science: PC Network/Hardware option. Fun, hands-on software exercises will help the student learn the many intricacies of computer software. The last week of the semester will feature pizza and Jeopardy game. (more…)

The Siskiyous 15s lost to Hayward, 12-6, on Monday night, and have been eliminated.

Coach Sarah Jones led her U-10 Siskiyou Heat ASA team to Junction City, Ore. to play in the Cooper the Dog girls fast pitch softball tournament. The team fielded only eight players, but what they lacked in numbers and size they made up in heart.

The Heat played four games. Their first game was against the Grants Pass Sluggers and the Heat won 8 to 7. They then lost to the Canby Wildcats, Monmouth/Independence Storm and the Eugene Thunder. (more…)

coffee-break-b.jpgYouth interested in registering for Computer Camp (Introduction to Multi Media Applications – CSCI 90 / #5083) should plan to do so as space is limited. Computer Camp will be held July 26 – 30, 2010 and has been specially designed for students under the age of 18 (and those that are still young of heart). The total cost for students who have not graduated from high school is $13 and will include all materials (regular student tuition fees do apply for all high school graduates and non-California residents).
