coffee-break-b.jpgWEED – Tulelake’s Lexie Greenbank was ripping aces, and hammering kill shots on the opening night of high school volleyball in Siskiyou County, as the Lady Honkers swept the Weed Lady Cougars, 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-23).

Tulelake took command of the match right from the opening of the first set. A kill by Madee Boyd put the Lady Honkers up 1-0. With the score 3-1 in favor of Tulelake, Greenbank rotated to server. By the time she was done, the Lady Honkers had rattled off eight service points, including six Greenbank aces. The score was 11-1.

Late in the first set, another Greenbank ace brought the Lady Honkers to the brink of victory, 24-11. Weed’s Osa Traylor put the celebration temporarily on ice with a block. However, Boyd nailed a kill shot to secure the set-one win, 25-12.

Tulelake led 2-1 on an ace and a kill by Gabby Rascon in the second set, when Geenbank took the serve. In a near replay of the first set, the Lady Honkers scored nine straight points with Greenbank behind the line. Michelle Rupert hammered a kill. Then, Greenbank accounted for seven of the next eight points, with a kill and six aces.

Down 24-11, Weed scored two in a row with Jeni Cheffey serving, including an ace. Rupert ended the second set with a block, giving Tulelake the 25-13 win. (more…)

Sherri, Darby & Greg Hanna awarding the Best Sportsmanship Trophy to Maddie Meyer

Story by Sherri Hanna; photos by Stan Krute

It was a cool and cloudy day for the 11th annual Rachel Hanna Swim Olympics, but that did not deter the eager swimmers from coming out and having a fabulous day of fun. Over 100 parents and children attended the event and had a great day of swimming and competing in games such as Coin Wish Pond, Rubber Ducky Push and the Biggest Splash Contest.

The coveted Sportsmanship trophy was awarded to Maddie Meyer, daughter of Steve and Jennifer Meyer of Etna. Her name will be added to the plaque that remains in the lobby of Scott Valley Community Swimming Pool throughout the year. Several other participants were given Best Sportsmanship ribbons and ice cream certificates to Dotty’s in Etna. These winners are observed throughout the day by secret judges who select the children who exhibit good manners and kindness to others. These traits were some of Rachel Hanna’s most notable and this is how she is honored each year at the swim Olympics. (more…)

WEED – The Weed Cougars and Etna Lions will go at it tooth and nail again later in the season, but for now, the Lions have top cat bragging rights in Siskiyou County. Etna downed Weed 40-26 on opening night of the 2010 high school football season on Friday.

The two teams were picked in a preseason coaches’ poll to finish in the bottom half of the Shasta Cascade League this season. However, both squads served notice that they can put up points in a hurry, and won’t be anyone’s doormat. (more…)

West CoastThe Yreka Miners varsity football squad began the 2010 campaign with a come-from-behind 24-17 win over the Trinity Wolves at Miner Stadium on Friday night via a Shafer to Dow TD pass with 1:58 to go.

The defending NSCIF D-III Wolves were first on the board. After stopping an early Miner drive at their doorstep, the Wolves posted a touchdown on a 97-yard run by Luke Curran.

Trevor Daugherty booted a 37-yard field goal for Yreka. The Miners went to the locker room down 7-3 at the half. (more…)

svpt-small.jpgWEED – The Etna Lion junior varsity’s defense came up with a game-winning safety with 3:19 to play, snatching a 2-0 win over the Weed Cougars on Friday night to open the football season. Both teams showed flashes of offensive ability during the game, but it was defense that ruled for the most part.

Early in the fourth quarter, Weed was in a punting situation, when Lion Preston Munson came to his coaches and asked to be put in the game.

“I can block the punt,” Munson said.

The Etna staff sent Munson into the game. True to his word, Munson broke through the line and blocked the kick. Weed recovered the ball, but Etna took over on the Cougar 14-yard-line on downs. (more…)

Four dirt bike enthusiasts from Yreka are on a mission—race in as many Hare Scrambles as possible, collect trophies, and have a blast doing it.

“We’re all trying to move up in class and win races, but it’s really all for fun,” said Jeff Strutz, who grabbed a first place finish in the Veterans C-Class at the Big Sky XC Hare Scramble, held at the Big Sky Ski Resort in Montana last weekend.

Strutz wasn’t the lone Yrekan celebrating after the competition. Jeff Green and Dave Schlumpberger also picked up first place awards–Green in the 250cc/2-stroke C-Class, and Schlumpberger in the Open C-Class. Also racing well was Darrel Collins, taking second in the Veterans B-Class.

Collins is the subject of the video above, shot by Strutz. The video shows the start of the Open B-Class race, and some obstacle work by Collins. (more…)

coffee-break-b.jpgThe Mt. Shasta Bears participated in a football scrimmage last Saturday at Mt. Shasta High School with Yreka, Fall River, and Burney—teams that Bear Coach Mike Dellabona referred to as evenly matched.

Dellabona said in an email interview that he and the Bear coaching staff were pleased with how the team performed at the scrimmage, overall.

“I was pleased that our team did not loose its composure and made good situational awareness decisions when they were presented. We had a few positive spots and we made a few mistakes. We will be addressing those this week, prior to heading to Modoc for our season opener,” said Dellabona

Although Dellabona said that the staff will work to bring out the best of the athletes’ “individual uniqueness,” the emphasis is on strong team play and having fun.

“We have built this new program with a ‘team’ aspect in mind. We have tried to squash the individualism and selfishness,” said Dellabona. “As a team we performed fantastic, but the most important part was that we really had fun! That’s what it’s really about.”

Mt. Shasta struggled last season (3-7), but Dellabona feels that the Bears can come out on top in any of their games this season. However, the team to beat in the Sacramento Valley League is the Trinity Wolves—the defending NSCIF D-III champions.

“In our conference, the team to beat will be our last game of the season, Trinity. Last year they had a running back that was the league MVP as a sophomore. We feel who ever wins that last game will be headed to post season play,” said Dellabona. “It is truly achievable to win every game, but realistically it’s how we play and the character that we posses when we loose.”

Dellabona also expects his team to show sportsmanship and be very aggressive

“We plan on offering an action packed offensive attack and a stop’em, no gain defense. We will be very aggressive,” concluded Dellabona. (more…)

The Yreka Miner varsity football team is looking to rebound from a less than stellar 2009 season (2-8), and appears poised to do so in 2010.

Yreka participated in a scrimmage with Mt. Shasta, Fall River, and Burney last Saturday in Mt. Shasta. Over the weekend, SiskiyouYouth.com did a short interview via email with Head Coach Orlyn Culp to get his take on the scrimmage and upcoming season. The questions and answers, as well as Yreka’s schedule and last year’s Northern Athletic League final standings are below.

Q: How do you feel the scrimmage went overall?

A: Overall, I felt like we saw what we needed. We had a lot of players fighting for the chance to “get on the grass” against Trinity (Yreka’s season opener), and we got to film them and see them in a competitive environment.

Q: What were you pleased with?

y-ad-1-click.jpgA: Defensively, I felt like we played well…we had a couple of breakdowns that can be easily fixed. Our players hustled to the ball and we played with contact all evening.

On offense, I thought we showed that when we played with discipline, we ran the ball effectively. And, I thought we showed improvement in the passing game.

Q: What needs more work?

A: Defensively, it will all come down to physical play and staying disciplined. (more…)
