The North Section CIF has released the updated volleyball playoff point rankings. In volleyball there is a requirement that teams be at least .500 in at least one of three areas, league, division, or overall.
Note: there seems to be a lot of discrepancies between actual win/loss records and what was used for rankings. So, the accuracy of these rankings may not be great.
Division IV (Because there are only 13 teams, all teams that meet the minimum requirements make playoffs)
Yreka (11-8-2) continue to be in a reasonably good position, ranked 6th. The Lady Miners trail Willows (22-11) and Gridley (14-16), who are tied for 4th.
Mt. Shasta (9-6-1) is tied for 10th with Orland (9-22) and will make the playoffs.
Division V (Top 16 make playoffs if they meet minimum requirements)
Etna (12-8-3) is ranked 6th, tied with Trinity (11-9-1) and Pierce (16-10). Etna will make the playoffs, but how high they are seeded will have a lot to do with this week’s matches.
Weed (2-11) is 16th and will not make playoffs due to the .500 rule.
Last week the section had Tulelake placed in D-V. This week, they are in D-VI…? (more…)
The North Section CIF has released the latest football playoff points rankings, and it’s still not pretty for the local teams. No 11-man football team is currently in position to make playoffs. Eight-man football uses a different system, and aren’t included in the rankings. The top six teams from each division go to playoffs, except D-IV that has eight teams go.
Division II
Yreka (4-5) is still ranked 10th (last), and will not make the playoffs–even if they beat Anderson this Friday.
Division III
Mt. Shasta (2-6) is still the closest local team to a playoff spot, but dropped from 7th to 8th, behind Pierce (3-5). It appears that if Mt. Shasta’s beat 3rd ranked Trinity on Friday, and both Esparto and Pierce lost, the Bears would sneak into the final spot. Pierce plays 0-9 U-Prep on Friday. Esparto (3-6) plays 0-9 Colusa. Sorry Bears, it doesn’t look good. (more…)
ETNA – The first time the Etna and Weed JV football squads met this season, the game was decided by two points, 2-0, when Etna came up with a safety late in the contest. Friday night’s game in Etna was considerably different, with the Lions cruising to a 37-6 win.
Weed was forced to punt on the first possession of the game, and Etna’s Ty Bradford took it back 75 yards to pay dirt. The PAT try was no good, but the Lions had the lead, 6-0.
On Etna’s first offensive possession, the Lions went 54 yards. Nick Meyer connected with Brian Colla on a 26-yard TD pass, as time expired in the first quarter, making it 12-0. The PAT was no good.
Bradford rushed for a 10-yard TD, with 1:42 left in the first half, upping the Etna advantage to 18-0. The Lions failed on their 2-point conversion attempt. (more…)

ETNA – Round-one of the football season series between the Etna Lions and Weed Cougars went to Etna, 40-26, on opening night in Weed. Round-two also went the Lions way, as Etna defeated Weed, 21-6, at Duncan Field on Friday night.
The early part of the game was all about the defense, with neither team scoring in the first quarter. At halftime, Etna held a 6-0 lead.
It was defense that set up Etna’s first touchdown, when Casey Carroll recovered a Cougar fumble at the Lions 24-yard-line. The Lions then drove 76 yards, capped by a Robbie Munson 4-yard burst into the end zone. The PAT was blocked, but Etna led 6-0 with 1:06 left in the first half.
A big return by Micah White on the ensuing kickoff gave the Weed offense the ball at the Lion 35, with 48 ticks on the clock. The Cougars were able to drive to the Etna 19, with four seconds remaining, but were unable to find pay dirt. (more…)
YREKA – The Yreka Lady Miners varsity volleyball team lost to the Central Valley Lady Falcons on Thursday night, 3-0. Despite having shown improvement over the course of the season, the Lady Miners were dominated at the net by Central Valley’s Bre Mackie, who generally had her way both hitting and blocking. Mackie leads the Northern Athletic League in kills, hitting percentage, and aces.
Yreka started well, taking the lead 5-4 in the first set, and eventually leading by as many as four points, at 14-10. However, the Lady Falcons fought back to gain the upper hand, 17-16. A tip for a kill by Taylor Brooks tied the set, 17-17. But Central Valley out scored Yreka 8-3 the remainder of the way, to win 25-20.
Set-two was also close, with Yreka holding the lead three times. The Lady Falcons were up, 19-18, when Mackenzie Allen ripped an ace to knot the score, 19-19. Central Valley put on another late scoring burst, 6-3, to grab the victory, 25-22. (more…)
The final game of league play for the Yreka Chargers Junior Midgets division ended in a shutout victory. The weather finally turned, and this game was played in wet, cold, and windy conditions. Never the less, the Chargers persevered, and won it, 15-0, over the Anderson Jr. Cubs.
As the wind limited the pass attack to a few nice receptions, the Chargers mounted an effective run game with Drew Kannely- Robles finding the end zone four times. Two touchdowns were called back on penalties, but a 30-yard run, and a 7-yard smash through were good for 12 points. A successful 2-point kick, and a 1-point run, gave the Chargers their 15 game winning points.
Nathan Black took over center duties, and performed outstanding despite the slick conditions. Evan Shinar was rock solid at right tackle, and helped lead the O- line to enable the run attack. Franky Garcia shored up the left side at guard. (more…)
