For the third year, PremierWest Bank and SiskiyouYouth.com are sponsoring the 2010/2011 Basketball Challenge for varsity basketball teams in Siskiyou County: Butte Valley, Dunsmuir, Etna, Happy Camp, Mt. Shasta, Tulelake, Weed, and Yreka. The winning team’s players and coaching staff will receive custom made “Team of the Year” T-shirts designed by Golden Grotto.
The winner of the challenge will be the girls or boys team that is most successful during the 2010/2011 season, which is defined as the team that advances the furthest in the North Section CIF playoffs. The challenge will end at the finish of the section playoffs and does not include any state playoff games because Division-VI teams (Butte Valley, Dunsmuir, and Happy Camp) are not eligible for state playoffs. Tiebreakers also do not include state playoff games. Games against JV teams do not count. (more…)
In the past, Impact Player Awards were given out each month. However, in order to get a better idea of who is really most deserving, I decided to wait until the end of each sports season before naming the recipients. The awards are organized below by sport and then alphabetically by last name.
Cross Country
Eric Neill & Timmy Williams, Yreka
I decided to name these two cross country stars together because that’s where they frequently were at the end of races—together or nearly so. Neill won the Northern Athletic League championship. Williams was 2nd, just nine ticks back. The duo led the Yreka Miners boys team to the NAL championship. At the North Section championships, Neill was 3rd, Williams 6th. When they got to the Division-IV state championships, it was Williams that finished highest at 12th, with Neill in 24th. While 12th – 24th may seem like a big gap, it was only 17 seconds over a 5k course. Perhaps best of all, they are both only juniors.
Football
Bryson Brooks, Mt. Shasta
Brooks led his team in tackles by a large margin, and was 4th in the Sacramento Valley League with 105 pull downs.
John Durney, Yreka
Durney led the Miners and the Northern Athletic League in tackles with 103.
Travis Fonseca, Yreka
Travis led the Miners in rushing with 1438 yards, which was also tops in the Northern Athletic League and 5th in the section for 11-man teams. He also led the Miners in scoring.
Liam Hagarty, Weed
Hagarty led the Cougars in tackles and receiving.
Josh Jordan, Etna
Etna doesn’t post stats, but I can tell you that Jordan spent most of his time in the opposing teams’ backfield. If he wasn’t sacking the QB or making a tackle, he was disrupting the play.
Jeremy Lopez, Butte Valley
The Bulldogs don’t post their stats, but I feel very comfortable saying that Lopez led the team in rushing and scoring. He would also very likely be in the top three in North Section rushing among 8-man schools.
Jake Mekeel, Dunsmuir
Mekeel led his team in tackles (154) and was second in the North Section for all size teams. (more…)
Yreka’s Timmy Williams finished 12th out of 204 competitors in the Division-IV state cross country championships held today at Woodward Park in Fresno. Williams completed the 5K course in 16:02. Teammate Eric Neill was 24th in 16:19.
The Yreka boys team finished 16th out of 24 teams. The team consisted of Williams, Neill, Matt Wood, Cody Griffith, Gabe Best, Clayton Bunn, and Chris Wilson.
Etna’s John Whelan came in 34th out of 183 runners in the boys D-V race in 17:00.
Mt. Shasta’s D-V boys team was 19th out of 22 teams. The team consisted of Sawyer Ducharme, who finished 51st (17:21), Chris Cazneaux, Michael Cook, Sean Hughes, Ameido Mohamed, Wesley Woodside, and Cody Lakin.
Yreka frosh Dakota Cash was 52nd (19:58) in the girls D-IV race out of 188 competitors. (more…)
Eight-man football is where it was at for the 2010 season in Siskiyou County. Not even one 11-man team had a winning record, and none made the playoffs. Butte Valley was Siskiyou County’s highest achieving team, finishing as the NSCIF D-VI 8-man football runner up at 10-2.
Best 11-Man Team: Yreka
Although the Miners finished with just a 4-6 record, they were still the best 11-man squad in Siskiyou County. Yreka beat Mt. Shasta (2-8). Mt. Shasta beat Weed (2-8). Etna also had a 4-6 record, but I’m pretty sure no one thinks Etna could beat Yreka.
Best 8-Man Team: Butte Valley
This one is easy, the Bulldogs beat both Dunsmuir and Happy Camp.
Rather than try to pick the best individual players at any particular position, I’ve made two lists: the most exciting players to watch, and 11 players I would want if I was picking teams for a Thanksgiving Day football game at the park. If you’re not on a list, it doesn’t mean you aren’t good or I don’t like you. It just means these are the 11 guys that I really noticed this season—most are seniors. If you made the most exciting list, you aren’t eligible for the other list. Players are listed alphabetically by school and last name.
In the slide show above, I’ve also included photos from College of the Siskiyous and Tulelake (varsity team folded during season).

HAYFORK – Despite having several highlight reel plays on both offense and defense, the Butte Valley Bulldogs couldn’t match the Hayfork Timberjacks’ offensive juggernaut on Wednesday night. The T-Jacks put up 46 points to win the NSCIF Division-VI 8-man football championship, 46-6. The victory also extended Hayfork’s winning streak to 23 games, one of the longest in the nation.
The Bulldogs finished the season second in the North Section with a 10-2 record—both losses coming at the hands of the Timberjacks.
It was no secret to Butte Valley who they had to stop—Scott Harrison. It didn’t happen.
On the second play from scrimmage, Harrison ripped off a 70-yard TD run on the frozen field. Several players, including Harrison, slipped on the play. Harrison ran for the 2-point conversion, giving the T-Jacks an 8-0 lead with less than a minute gone in the game. (more…)
This probably wasn’t the best volleyball season that Siskiyou County teams have had in recent years. One bright spot was Tulelake (9-1, 15-8) grabbing a share of the Evergreen League championship, along with Big Valley (9-1, 15-7-3). The Lady Honkers were the only Siskiyou County team to claim a championship.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that there weren’t some other positives, and below I’ve listed what I believe are the “Best” of Volleyball” this season in Siskiyou County. Above is a slide show of my favorite pictures from high school and College of the Siskiyous volleyball.
Best Team: Yreka (13-10-2)
The record isn’t all that impressive, but they beat Mt. Shasta and Etna. Etna beat Tulelake. None of the other teams in the county have any legit argument for being the best.
Sometimes you can tell as much by who a team loses to as you can by who they beat. Yreka’s loses included twice to Hidden Valley (28-1) one of the top teams in the entire state of Oregon (3rd in state in D-4A), twice to West Valley (26-9) the NSCIF D-IV champion, three times to Central Valley (19-7) a NSCIF D-IV semi-final team. That’s seven of ten losses to teams that are a combined 73-17. Oh, and one loss was to Brookings Harbor in the championship match at the Arcata Tourney. That’s a tough schedule.
Most Improved Team from prior season: Yreka
Last season the Lady Miners were 9-13, in 2008 they were 3-18-1, in 2007 they were 7-15, in 2006 they were 5-14. This season was the first winning season since the Lady Miners were runner-up in the 2005 NSCIF D-IV playoffs. Add in a second place finish at the Arcata Tourney, and a third at the Miner Mountain Blast tourney, and I’d say that’s a lot of improvement.
Most Improved Team from start to finish of season: Mt. Shasta
The Lady Bears started the season 4-5-1. That’s not real bad, except two of the wins were over Dunsmuir and one was against Weed. Weed only had two wins all season.
On the other hand, the Lady Bears went 7-2 down the stretch, beating defending SCL champion Etna twice. Their only losses were to Shasta Cascade League and NSCIF D-VI champion Fall River, and to NSCIF D-IV runner up Sutter. That’s a pretty good second half of the season–good enough for second in the SCL and a berth in the playoffs. (more…)

The Butte Valley Bulldogs are headed to Hayfork next Wednesday for the NSCIF D-VI 8-man football championship game against the defending champion Timberjacks (11-0). The Bulldogs earned the trip with a hard-fought 30-22 win over the Mercy Warriors on Friday night.
The first half was what might be expected in a game that featured a team seeded second, the Bulldogs, and a seventh seeded team, the Warriors—total domination by the Bulldogs. (more…)

“B” teams slide show is at the end of the article
A pair of significantly improved Jackson Street Rams girls basketball teams gave the Scott Valley Panthers all they could handle Thursday, in Fort Jones.
The Rams “A” team led the Panthers by 10 points at the end of the third quarter. Only a furious comeback in perhaps one of the most exciting quarters of junior high basketball this season allowed the Panthers to grab a 27-25 victory. (more…)
College of the Siskiyous Eagle baseball player Adam Miller signed a national letter of intent on Wednesday with Jacksonville State University.
Miller hit .301 last season and was second on the Eagles in runs scored, doubles, and stolen bases. He was a second team all Golden Valley Conference selection last spring as an infielder, and was selected to play in the Northern California Junior College baseball all-star showcase game this fall.
Miller was a scholar athlete last year with a 3.47 GPA. He plans on majoring in Political Science and eventually would like to be a Supreme Court Judge. Adam graduated from Spanish Springs High School, in Sparks Nevada. (more…)
