HENLEY – The Yreka Lady Miners stayed with the Klamath Union Lady Pelicans for a little over one quarter in the fourth place game at the Basin Best Tournament, on Thursday. Then, Yreka simply turned the game over to Klamath Union.
Yreka trailed by a single basket, 10-8, at the end of the first quarter, and 13-12 early in the second stanza. However, the Lady Pelicans began to read Yreka’s telegraphed passes (texted passes for those under 40-years-old), leading to a plethora of turnovers and easy transition baskets. Klamath Union went on a 23-5 run, to lead 36-17 at the intermission. (more…)
WEED – After a 1-6 start to the season, the College of the Siskiyous Lady Eagles have won five straight games. On Thursday night, Lauryn Lesina made a living from the land-of-three, draining eight treys for a game-high 24 points, as COS cruised to a 75-49 win over the Yuba Lady 49ers (2-8).
The Lady Niners had a chance to feel good about their chances of winning for approximately 20 seconds, taking a 2-0 lead. It was all down hill from there.
Lesina put the Eagles up 3-2 with a 3-ball that started an 18-2 run. Jo Jo Grant went coast-to-coast, making it 5-2. Lesina drained another 3-pointer, and Michelle Hoehn added a put-back, 10-2. Yuba scored, temporarily halting the run. But, COS picked it right back up again with a hoop from Dominique Quitoriano. A steal-n-score by Grant upped COS’ advantage to 10 points, 14-4. Lesina and Natalie Smith dropped dimes to Hoehn for back-to-back buckets, making it 18-4. (more…)
TULELAKE – The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears led almost the entire first half of Tuesday night’s game, and took a 32-26 advantage into the locker room at the intermission. However, the Tulelake Lady Honkers came out flying in the second half with 11 straight points to take the lead, 37-32, and go on to win 58-49 in the varsity contest.
Janelle Jaegel opened the scoring in the first quarter, giving Mt. Shasta a 2-0 lead. Lady Honker Sabrina Gribble countered with a 3-pointer, putting Tulelake up 3-2. The home team wouldn’t lead again until the third quarter.
A trey from Lady Bear Jeanette Ricci and a steal-n-score by Ricci on the Tulelake in bounds play regained the lead for Mt. Shasta 7-3. The Bears led 18-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Tulelake closed the gap to a single point, 26-25, on a hoop by Gabby Rascon about three-quarters of the way through the second frame.
Ricci answered for the Bears with a coast-to-coast drive for a hoop, 28-25. Ricci then hit from beyond the arc, 31-25. A Ricci freebie pushed the Mt. Shasta lead up to seven points, 32-25.
Rosanna Chavolla added a free throw to the Tulelake total, making it Mt. Shasta 32 – Tulelake 26 at the half. (more…)

KLAMATH FALLS – The Bonanza Antlers boys varsity basketball team knocked off the Yreka Miners, 40-38, in a first round contest at the Basin Best Basketball Tournament. The game, which had the offensive firepower of a squirt gun—a small squirt gun—was played at Mazama High School on Tuesday afternoon in front of a sparse crowd.
The Miners managed a paltry 14 points in the second half of the contest. Bonanza was only slightly better, with 18 second half points. It was just enough for the Antlers.
Yreka led 9-8 after the first quarter, and 24-22 at the half, but the Antlers took the lead, 34-31, going into the final frame on back-to-back 3-balls by Ryan Stewart.
The Antlers’ Jimmy Gallagher opened up the fourth quarter with a sweet holiday dish to Bruce Cox for a bucket, upping the Bonanza advantage to 36-31. (more…)
TULELAKE – The Mt. Shasta Bears boys varsity basketball team picked up a much needed win, with a 63-38 blasting of the Tulelake Honkers on Tuesday night. The Bears (4-8) had lost five straight contests. The loss dropped Tulelake’s record to 5-6.
The Bears took control of the game early, with a 16-0 opening run. Tim Jaegel and Paul Thelander accounted for 13 of Mt. Shasta’s first 16 points. A put-back by Jaegel started the offensive onslaught. Jaegel then dished to Thelander for a bucket. Thelander made it 6-0 on a tip-in of his own miss. A 3-ball from Brad Thomas upped the advantage to 9-0. Another Thelander put-back made it 11-0. Then, Jaegel hit from the land of three, 14-0. Jaegel converted a pass from Thelander to finish the run with a deuce, 16-0. (more…)
It’s looking like a pretty exciting year in the Evergreen League for both the boys and the girls, with three strong boys teams and four tough girls teams. This might be pretty interesting. I have to admit, I’m not real comfortable with these predictions, but here they are.
Boys
1.Tulelake – while the Honkers are just 5-5 in the preseason, their level of early competition exceeds the rest of the league by quite a bit, and they have a couple of pretty good wins, including against Fall River.
2. Happy Camp – the Indians have started strong at 5-1 and seem to have the talent to win a lot of games this season.
3. Dunsmuir – the Tigers tend to get much stronger as the season progresses. Currently, they are 4-5, and have lost to Happy Camp in the preseason. It would not be a surprise to see Dunsmuir wind up in the 2-spot at the end of the season.
4. Butte Valley – at 2-7, there’s not too much impressive about the Bulldogs. However, there’s a good group of athletes on the roster. So, as the season moves on, there may be improvement for the Dogs. (more…)

While I’m posting this article and slide show on Christmas eve, it really isn’t a Christmas story. At least, it’s not a “WalMart Christmas” story. It’s not about people getting the latest and greatest smart phone—a phone that probably isn’t needed, but is simply wanted. The story is also not about someone simply repeating Christ’s words, and then being anything but Christian.
Instead, it’s about two young women from Etna who are living Christ’s words, and walking His path. It’s about Emily Loogman’s senior project, the Lifesaver Kit Project, and her sister Sarah’s deep involvement with the project.
Now that I think more about it, maybe this is a Christmas story–a story that reflects the true reason for the season.
Here’s the story as told by Sarah:
By Sarah Loogman
This past summer, Etna High School senior and student-athlete Emily Loogman, embarked on a two-month journey that changed her life. Through a Christian ministry organization called Teen Missions International, Emily spent the majority of her break in the bush of Zambia, Africa. Riding between villages and orphanges by motorcycle, Emilys’s band of “Orphan Angels” spent each day teaching classes, giving demonstrations, and spending time with AIDS orphans and other local villagers.
Though Loogman has since then acclimated back to the every day life of a busy high school senior, the memory of Africa hasn’t escaped her. While in Zambia, Emily noticed a fundamental need among the Africa people for basic medical supplies. She noticed that such things as basic as a bandage or antiseptic wipes could be the difference between life and death in such bacteria-filled environments – items that Americans take for granted. (more…)
So, I’m a little bored with the break in high school sports. The rest is nice, but I started thinking–always a dangerous thing. The questions in my mind were which teams will win the Shasta Cascade League boys and girls crown.
So, realizing that I’ll probably be completely wrong, here are how I see the final standings in the
Shasta Cascade League
Boys
1. Weed – the Cougars have been impressive this preseason with a 7-3 record. Last year, they were co-champions in the SCL. This year’s version of the Cougars may be better. While they do not have the same level of 3-point threat, they still have plenty of offense. The defense is way better, with all five players making the effort.
2. Fall River – the Bulldogs lost their stud player from last year, Taylor Sloat, but still seem to be getting it done, with a 6-4 record so far, including a four-point win over Weed.
3. Mt. Shasta – if anyone can figure out the Bears, let me know. While perhaps not as talented as last season’s co-champs, there’s still plenty there. Yet, they are just 3-8 so far. I think the Bears will improve and make a run at the title. Really, any of the top three teams have a shot.
4. Modoc – the Braves are 5-4, but the wins have been over small weak teams. They’ll beat the bottom of the league, but not the top. (more…)
