MOUNT SHASTA – The second day of the Mount Shasta Holiday was filled with incredible finishes. The Weed Cougars nipped Hidden Valley 54-53 on a final second coast to coast trip by Michah White. Sutter hit two of four free throws, including a technical foul, with no time on the clock to beat Durham, 53-52. And, Camberwell, the team from Australia, came within inches of a come-from-behind win over Yreka, as the buzzer sounded.

The Yreka Miners led 49-44 with 1:51 to play in Friday night’s game, when Camberwell made a final comeback bid. A bucket by Andrew Parker made the score 49-46. Two freebies by Kaighan Johnson, made it a 1-point contest, 49-48, with 24 ticks to go. (more…)

MOUNT SHASTA – The Mt. Shasta Bears won their Holiday Tournament opening round game against Australia’s Camberwell School on Thursday night, 57-44. The day prior to the game, Bear coach Kirk Andrus said that the teams didn’t know anything about each other, but would learn on the court. What the Bears learned was that the Australian team was very quick, scrappy, and had a big man to be reckoned with—Kaighan Johnson.

Johnson dominated the boards and put up eighth points in the first quarter to help Camberwell end the opening frame with a 19-18 lead.

However, a combination of better Bear defense and fatigue for the travel-weary Camberwell squad gave Mt. Shasta the edge for the remainder of the game. (more…)

MOUNT SHASTA – The Mt. Shasta Bears basketball team will be taking on the Camberwell Grammar School team from Canterbury, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia in the opening round of the Holiday Tournament on Thursday night.

Camberwell is coached by former College of the Siskiyous player, Stephen Blackley. Blackley played for Coach Tom Powers at COS from 1992-93, on a team that made it to the second round of the state playoffs. Blackley was Powers’ first international player and he remembers the Australian’s abilities.

“He was an excellent passer and shooter. Unfortunately, he was only able to play one year because of an ACL injury,” said Powers. “He was a very positive player and he was a natural leader, and he has become a very successful coach.”

coffee-break-b.jpgAfter returning to Australia, Blackley played in Australia’s second highest league, the semi-pro SEABL. His team, the Frankston Blues Basketball Club, won four conference championships and were the national runner-up twice.

Blackley also coached the Southern Peninsula Sharks in the Big-V Competition, a league that is Australia’s third highest. The Sharks had five top-four finishes during Blackley’s seven-year tenure as coach, going 27-0 in 2005. The Sharks were the only team ever to go undefeated in the league. (more…)
