It is once again time for AAU Basketball in Siskiyou County. For the last six years, AAU basketball has been providing Siskiyou County’s young athletes the opportunity to bring their basketball skills to a whole new level. Athletes from Etna, Mount Shasta, Weed, Yreka, and other communities in Siskiyou County have enjoyed this great experience.
The benefits of being part of this elite basketball program have proven to be numerous. Better competition breeds a better competitor. Each year, the team travels to places like Chico, Rocklin, Redding, Medford, and Reno to play against other AAU teams. Our athletes are exposed to extremely talented teams, pushing them to become better players themselves. Our goal is to enable Siskiyou County athletes in their goals of playing basketball beyond the high school level. (more…)

WEED – Weed Cougar coach Mike Carpine wasn’t exactly thrilled after the section seeding meeting when he saw that his team would likely host the Chester Volcanoes (23-4) in the quarterfinals of the NSCIF Division-V playoffs. The day of the seeding meeting, Carpine told SiskiyouYouth.com that Chester should have been seeded higher than fifth. As he often is, the Silver Fox was right.
Chester took out the 4-seed Cougars (19-6) on Saturday afternoon, 64-57.
The contest was close from beginning to end with neither team able to pull away. The biggest lead for the Cougars was eight points, 37-29, with three minutes to go in the third quarter. Chester’s largest advantage was 10 points, just before the end of the overtime period. For most of the game the margin was a mere 2-4 points.
Volcanoe Topher Taylor opened the scoring with a long-range trey. Weed’s Jake West came right back with a 3-ball for the Cougars, 3-3. A bucket by Keith Wann put Chester back in front, 5-3. A deuce from Mykeil White tied it 5-5. And so it went for the rest of the quarter, with White hitting a shot just before the buzzer to give Weed a 16-14 lead at the end of one.
The Cougars upped their advantage to four points going into the locker room at half, 29-25.
Jake West added a free throw to the Weed total to start the third quarter and then dialed long distance, to make it 33-25. Chester countered with a put-back by Chad Durkin and a steal-n-score by Cole Fanning, 33-29. Two in a row from White pushed the Cougar lead back to ocho, at 37-29. The Cougars held a 5-point lead, 40-35 going into the final frame. (more…)
The Butte Valley Lady Bulldogs are the only Siskiyou County team to advance to the semi-finals of the NSCIF playoffs this season. That makes them the 2010-11 PremierWest Bank Basketball Challenge winners. Butte Valley also won last year, when they won the section and went 23-0.
The Lady Bulldogs still have lots of work to do this season, with an eye towards the big prize–back-to-back D-VI section championships. To get to the finals, they have to take down a tough Hayfork Lady Timberjacks team (20-6) on Wednesday, March 2 in Hayfork.
The Lady Bulldogs will be receiving custom made T-Shirts designed by Golden Grotto, in Yreka.
Have you outgrown your outdoor recreation toys and want to sell them? The PremierWest Bank Siskiyou Sportsman’s Expo will give you that opportunity at the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds on March 19, 2011.
The Sportsman’s Expo is the perfect venue for sellers and buyers of used outdoor recreation equipment including boats, trailers, ATVs, trucks, etc. For a $15 fee, sellers can purchase a space to park your “toy” at the Expo and put a “for sale” sign on it (one item per space). The fee will include one admission to the 6th Annual PremierWest Bank Sportsman’s Expo. You will be coming to the Expo anyway so why don’t you try to make a little cash while you are at it! Buyers will be able to browse through the lot and take home a new toy for recreation fun. (more…)
Yreka (10) 33 – Orland (2) 46 – NSCIF D-IV Rd-2
Yreka was leading 8-2 in the first quarter when Mackenzie Allen went out with a knee injury. At the time, Allen had 4 points and 4 boards. AmMathee Stott led Yreka in scoring for the game with 10 points. Katie Brummett scored 7 points. Kalina Betts pulled down 5 rebounds.
DORRIS – In case anyone in the North Section thinks the Butte Valley Lady Bulldogs are a “one horse show,” think again. While post player Kady Porterfield frequently dominates games and headlines, the 3-seed Lady Bulldogs showed that the talent is team-wide, on Friday night. The Lady Bulldogs had four players score in double figures against a quality Happy Camp Lady Indian squad.
Butte Valley lit up 6-seed Happy Camp (13-6), 81-48. Point guard Nicole Levesque poured in 28 points, sophomore post player Haley Reynolds put up 20, and Tiffani Yeager added 14 points. Porterfield, who was nearly constantly double-teamed down low, still scored 15 points.
In addition to their offensive explosion, the Lady Bulldogs were tenacious on defense, holding Happy Camp to just two field goals in the first quarter and six total points, on the way to a 17-6 lead at the end of one quarter. Butte Valley effectively shut down the vaunted Lady Indian 3-point shooting trio of Shauniece Polmater, Florence Peters and Kassandra Polmateer for the first 12 minutes of the game. However, the Lady Indians would push back midway through the second quarter. (more…)

WEED – The Weed Cougars tried and mostly succeeded in playing a disciplined basketball game against the Williams Yellowjackets in the first round of the NSCIF Division-V playoffs on Wednesday. The Yellowjackets seemed to prefer a playground style run-and-gun game. In the end, the more disciplined Weed style won out, 60-53, but not before the Yellowjackets made several exciting runs at the Cougars, and Yellowjacket Carlos Velazquez stung the Cougars for 27 points.
Weed held an 18-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, and 32-18 at the half. It appeared that the game was headed towards the blowout that one might expect when a 4-seed hosts a 13-seed.
The scrappy Yellowjackets, however, came out swarming in the second half. Velazquez hit a bucket to make it, 32-20.. Two freebies by Cougar Mykeil White made the score 34-20. Weed would not score again until there was just 2:17 left on the clock in the third quarter.
Back-to-back buckets by William’s Tony Salcedo, cut the Weed lead to 10 points, 34-24. A put-back by Pedro Boites, made it 34-26. Ben Mayes added a free throw for the Jackets, and it was 34-27. Jose Alcaraz catapulted a 3-ball to bring Williams within two possession of the lead, 34-30. A deuce from Velazquez made it a one-basket contest, 34-32, with 2:40 left in the quarter. (more…)
