ETNA – The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears will three-peat as Shasta Cascade League softball champions. That became a fact, after they swept the Etna Lady Lions on Friday, 8-4 and 13-1. The only remaining question is whether or not it will be an outright title or shared.
The Lady Bears are 8-0 in the SCL, with just a double-header against Modoc (3-3, 8-5) next Friday left in their league schedule. Etna (4-2, 13-10) is two games back in the loss column with double dips against Burney (0-6, 3-15) on Monday, and Fall River (5-3, 11-8) next Friday. The Lady Bears magic number for the outright crown is one. Any Etna loss or Mt. Shasta win equals Mt. Shasta’s third straight undisputed SCL championship.
Game-one of the Etna v Mt. Shasta double header was what fans have come to expect when the Lady Lions and Lady Bears tangle—close and hard fought. Etna was first on the board in the bottom of the second inning, when Brittany Dean walked and scored on an RBI by Tiana Besoain.
Alex Peruzzi singled in the top of the third inning, and Tori Weatherford drove her home with a double for Mt. Shasta’s first run, tying the game at 1-1.
Etna went back on top, 2-1, in the fourth inning, when Tandy Thackeray walked and scored.
The Lady Bears put up a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, to take their first lead of the game. With two down, Sejay Sarti doubled. A single by Weatherford plated Sarti. Weatherford went to second on the throw home. Weatherford stole third base, and scored when Kayla Spini reached on an error, giving Mt. Shasta a 3-2 lead. (more…)

So what happens when a head coach thinks an umpire has blown a call? Yeah, everyone knows that never happens. But just in case, what’s the proper way to ask an umpire to ask another umpire who may have had a better view for a little help?
Here’s umpire Dale Anzo’s explanation:
The proper way for a coach to get help is to request time and have it granted by the umpire. Then, the coach should walk or jog over to the umpire. Never should a coach “charge” an umpire. Once the coach gets to the umpire, the coach should ask a questions, not just yell at us to get help. (more…)

YREKA – The Yreka Miners got back in the win column on Tuesday afternoon, with a 5-4 victory over the Corning Cardinals (5-5, 5-11). Yreka (4-3, 12-8) had lost its prior six games, after notching 11 consecutive wins. It was a mixed bag for Yreka against Corning, as the Miners were largely responsible for all of the runs scored in the game, five for Yreka and four for Corning.
“A win is a win. I thought we played well for six innings, and just had a bad third (inning), said Yreka Coach Jason Freitas. “We have to figure out how to make the easy plays and stop killing ourselves.”
Corning was first on the board with a run in the opening frame. Michael Garcia singled with one out, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, third on a fly out, and scored on a passed ball, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Yreka gained the advantage in the bottom of the second inning. Wade Beryhill singled to lead off, and stole second. He went to third on an errant pick off attempt. Josh Lee plated Berryhill with a single. Ryan Todd was hit by a pitch, putting Miners on first and second base. John Durney laid down a sacrifice bunt that wound up being a hit, loading the bases. One of the rules that sometimes seems to confuse fans is the “Catch and Carry” rule. Usually, it comes into play when a fielder makes a catch in foul ground near the line (or sometimes there is no line) signifying “dead ball” territory. After making the catch the fielder’s momentum carries him/her across the line. That’s when it can get confusing for those unfamiliar with the catch and carry rule.
Here is umpire Dale Anzo’s rule explanation:
Rule 8 Section 4, i states:
A live ball is unintentionally carried by a fielder from playable territory into dead-ball territory. A fielder carrying a live ball into the dugout or team area to tag a player is considered to have unintentionally carried it there. (more…)
