The Mt. Shasta Bears turned in a gutty performance in Friday’s season opener against Modoc, but were eventually overpowered by the visiting Braves, 27-6.
The Bears, hammered by pre-season injuries, called up five sophomores at the start of last week, just to have 14 players available for Friday’s game. But that didn’t stop them from playing with energy and determination against the Braves. Mistakes, however, would do them in as the Bears turned it over six times on the night.

Mt. Shasta started the game by taking the opening kickoff and hanging on to the ball for nearly seven minutes. The Bears faced three 4th down plays on the opening series, but converted every one of them against a Modoc defense that was on it’s heels. However, the drive ended when a pass from sophomore QB Brandon Acord was tipped at the line of scrimmage and intercepted at the Modoc 7-yard-line. The Braves then launched a length-of-the-field drive of their own, finishing it off early in the second quarter on a 27-yard pass from Wyatte Valena to Zack Goulden.

The Bears’ next series also started well, as Mount Shasta picked up three quick first downs; but an interception by Modoc’s Riley Larranaga ended the threat at the Braves’ 34-yard-line. It took a half-dozen plays for Modoc to capitalize, with Luke Smith taking it in from the 10-yard-line to make it 14-0.

On the next series, The Braves were consistently in the Bears’ backfield. The pressure would pay off. On a deep pitch to running back Jordan Hannah, the ball sailed high, glanced off Hannah’s hand and was picked up on the bounce by Modoc cornerback Drew Culp. There was nothing the Bears could do as Culp scampered untouched into the end zone to push the lead to 20-0 with 4:48 left in the half.

The Bears still looked a bit rattled on the ensuing kickoff as the ball was bobbled and touched by two different players before Hannah picked it up and returned it across the 35. Mt. Shasta then settled in and produced their most effective drive of the night, opening holes up the middle for Hannah, Michael DeLeon and Jarred Booth. Their running, and the blocking up front by the offensive line (Jesse Arendt, Tim Zanni, Marshall DellaBona, Joseph Kane and Obie Hamrick, left to right) put the Bears at the 10-yard-line with a chance to get on the board. ETNA – No one knows what 2011 may hold for the Etna Lions varsity football team, but any one at Duncan Field on Friday night knows it started with a bang…or a crack.

Special team’s gunner Casey Carroll welcomed Weed’s Carlos Sanchez to Etna with a punishing blow on the opening kickoff. The collision set the tone for what would be a good night for Etna, as the Lions rolled to a 41-7 win in their season opener.

Junior signal caller Nick Meyer tossed four touchdowns and ran for another for the Lions. The first strike came with 5:20 left in the first quarter, when he hit senior wide out Colby Rimmer for an 8-yard score.

The tandem hooked up again in the second quarter for a 44-yard score. Meyer’s third TD toss was to Marc Federico—a 19-yarder with 2:31 left in the second quarter.
Etna led 21-0 at the half. (more…)

WEAVERVILLE – The last three games between the Yreka Miners and Trinity Wolves were tightly contested. Friday night’s season opener for both squads was a no-doubter, as the Wolves rang up 30 points to the Miners’ zip.

Trinity scored on a 4-yard TD run by Luke Curran , with 2:21 left in the first quarter. Thomas Wagner added the extra point to make it 7-0.

Curran notched his second TD of the night on a 2-yard run, with 7:43 left in the first half. (more…)

WEAVERVILLE – With five of Yreka’s top sophomore players moved up to varsity, it might not have been a surprise that the Miners struggled in their season opener against the Trinity Wolves. Although Yreka led briefly, 7-6, in the first quarter, it was mostly the Wolf Pack show on Friday evening.

Trinity took the lead, 6-0, with 7:35 to go in the opening frame, when Jesse Cody recovered a Miner fumble in the end zone.

Yreka responded, with 1:28 left in the quarter, as Casey Gusaas went three yards for a TD. Tye Currie added the extra point, giving Yreka the lead, 7-6.

The Wolves regained the lead as time expired in the first quarter, when QB Ryan Higgins connected with Daniel Hill for a 49-yard TD pass play. The conversion attempt failed, leaving Trinity up 12-7.

A fumble recovery by Trinity’s Logan Maclaren at the Miner 27, with 8:30 to play in the first half, set up the Wolves’ next score. About two minutes later, Josh Spagel took it in from five yards out. Higgins ran for the 2-point conversion, making it 20-7 at the half. (more…)

ETNA – The Etna Lady Lions opened their 2011 volleyball campaign with a 3-0 win over the Butte Valley Lady Bulldogs (0-2), on Thursday night.

The first two sets of the match were competitive, with Etna winning the first set 25-16, and the second set 25-18. Butte Valley held a 3-0 advantage early in the second set, and after briefly losing the lead, went back on top again at 7-6. Etna eventually built a sizable 15-8 lead, but the resilient Lady Bulldogs battled back to within a single point at 17-16. However, that was as close as they would come, as the Lady Lions went on an 8-2 run to finish the second set with a 25-18 win.

The Lady Lions found themselves down 2-0 to start the final set, but after that it was all Etna. The Lady Lions outscored Butte Valley 25-6 the rest of the way for a 25-8 set win, and a 3-0 match victory. (more…)
