The North Section CIF has updated the playoff points rankings for volleyball. Keep in mind when looking at the rankings that they are based on win/loss/schedule information posted on MaxPreps. If coaches have failed to keep MaxPreps updated, it has an effect on the rankings, possibly making them inaccurate. Top sixteen qualified teams in each division make playoffs (D-IV only has 14 teams). To qualify, teams must be .500 overall (excluding upper division league matches), or.500 in division, or .500 in league.
Division-IV
The Yreka Lady Miners (20-9) stayed tied for 5th, now with Orland (Was Anderson, who dropped to 7th). Yreka could move up or drop considerably depending on what they do in their final two NAL matches. Beating Anderson will be key.
The Trinity Lady Wolves (11-13-1) are ranked 11th. The Lady Wolves’ chances have improved considerably with a pair of league wins last week. They are now 4-4 in league, and just need to win one of their two remaining league matches, on the road against Durham (9-18) or at home against Willows (29-6).
Division-V
The Mt. Shasta Lady Bears (10-7-1) dropped to 7th, but will make the playoffs. (more…)
The North Section CIF has released the updated playoff points rankings for football. Keep in mind when looking at the rankings that they are based on win/loss/schedule information posted on MaxPreps. If coaches have failed to keep MaxPreps updated, it has an effect on the rankings, possibly making them inaccurate. The top six teams in each 11-man division make playoffs. Eight-man is done differently and we’ll look at that in the next day or so.
Division-II
With their huge upset of Orland last Friday, the Yreka Miners (5-4) have moved into the sixth spot, ahead of Central Valley and behind Wheatland. A win over Anderson this Friday would pretty much ensure a playoff berth, possibly even a 5-seed if Wheatland (5-4) slips up against Gridley (3-6). (more…)

The Siskiyou Knights Unlimited Pop Warner Youth Football Team finished the season strong with a convincing win over the Raiders from Lost River 51–6. The Unlimited Knights outscored their opponents in the last three games 125–18. Coach Glenn Gonzales credits this to, “the development of the players both mentally and physically the second half of the season.”
The Pee Wee Knights started their game strong Saturday, but the Hawks proved to be too much for a second week in a row, beating the Knight’s 37 19. Coach Darren Lonnon gives a great deal of praise to this team, “they are a very young team and grew tremendously as the season progressed.”
Both the Unlimited team and the Pee Wees finished their seasons with records of 4–4.
President Craig Kay stated, “We are very happy with the growth of the kids and the program, this is our second year in the Klamath County Pop Warner program and have found our home in this new league. Our program is designed to focus on building character in these boys as well as promoting scholastics with good grades and we succeeded in both.” (more…)

It ’s hard to put into words…dominate, crush, destroy, dismantle…. Ah, “one-sided.” No that’s not really sufficient either. Put it this way: 70 points is just shy of the COS record for points scored in a football game (72), and had they chosen to reach 100, the Eagles probably would have made it. Steven Ballard set the single game record for PATs made in a game, with 10. He was 10/10 to be exact. Let that sink in for a second or two…that’s right. In order to hit 10 PATs, your team has to score 10 touchdowns…10! And, Ballard wasn’t the only record-setter.
Just to add to the COS homecoming festivities, Taylor Cox rushed for 269 yards and a pair of TDs, in part-time duty. Cox now holds the COS career rushing record at 2556 yards, with at least two games still left in his career (Alex Gaston 2548). He also holds the career touchdowns mark at 29 (Gaston 28). Just for some added fun, Cox is closing in on Patrick Lunney’s single season record of 1564 yards. Cox is at 1319, meaning he’ll need about 123 yards per game in the last two regular season games. The single season TD record is 18 (Gaston). Cox has 12 this season.
Now, some might say that COS ran up the score. Well, the answer to that is that if you’re using almost all of the play clock, and then handing off, but the other team couldn’t tackle a dummy covered in pine pitch, then you’re not running up the score.
Sometimes statistics don’t really tell the story. In this case, they pretty much do. So, the story is below in the form of game stats. (more…)
The Charger Mighty Mites and Jr. PeeWees played exhibition games during the opening round of District playoffs at Miner Stadium on Saturday. In the afternoon, the Charger Midgets beat the Durham Trojans, 36-12. The Midgets head to Gridley next Saturday. (more…)
It seemed like a mismatch. The undefeated and second ranked Orland Trojans had won eight straight games this season, including a 30-6 win over Corning earlier in the year. Yreka, just 4-4, was coming off a 46-0 beat down at the hands of Corning. Obviously, it was going to be no contest…wrong.
As one might have expected, Orland marched down the field on their first drive, and scored to take a 7-0 lead. The rout was on, right? Wrong again.
While Orland was able to move the ball effectively on the ground (nearly 400 yards on the night), the Miner defense didn’t surrender the end zone for the rest of the half. The Orland defense did.
The Miner’s tied the game, 7-7, on an 80-yard TD strike from Kaden Culp to Gabe Durney, with 53 ticks on the first half clock. Trevor Daugherty added the extra point. Culp got his first varsity start at the quarterback position due to an injury to Dean Schafer, who played mainly on defense against Orland.
The second half started a lot like the game began, with Orland scoring on the opening possession to regain the lead 14-7.
However, this time the Miners answered right back on a 3-yard TD run by Culp. With the Daugherty PAT, it was tied again, 14-14.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter, but Orland had a chance to win it with 18 seconds remaining to play with a short field goal. They missed.
The Miners took over at their own 20 and ran out the clock, sending the game to overtime. (more…)
HAPPY CAMP – Coming into Friday night’s game, the Happy Camp Indians (4-2, 5-3) had won four straight. The Butte Valley Bulldogs (6-0, 8-0) hadn’t lost since the final game of last season. On paper, it looked like it would be a tight contest, and it was for about a quarter and a half.
The Indians got the first break of the game, when Sean McDowell recovered a fumble at the Bulldog 36-yard line. However, Butte Valley’s defense forced a turnover on downs, and the Bulldog offense went to work from its own 33-yard-line.
This time, the Dogs took care of the ball, and went 67 yards to pay dirt. Fifty-seven of the yards were covered on a Colten Struble to Will Gentry TD pass. Struble then threw to Bobby Vaughan for a 2-point conversion, giving the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead, with 8:19 left in the first quarter.
About seven minutes later, Gustavo Lopez rushed 24 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed, leaving Butte Valley with a 14-0 lead.
Eleven seconds into the second quarter, Happy Camp answered. Charley Reed connected with James Simmons for a 45-yard TD pass. Justin Wright powered in for the 2-point conversion, making the score 14-8. (more…)
DUNSMUIR – Prior to the start of the Dunsmuir Lady Tigers volleyball match against the Tulelake Lady Honkers, Dunsmuir coach Lisa Kirch pointed to a banner on the gym wall.
“It’s been since 1982 since we’ve been league champions. I hope we can do it. Even a share of the championship would be great,” said Kirch.
Not since 1982…that’s 29 years for those of you counting your fingers and toes at home.
With the Lady Tigers’ 3-1 win over Tulelake on Thursday night, the drought is officially over. Dunsmuir is guaranteed at least a share of the Evergreen League crown this season. The Lady Tigers finished the league campaign with a record of 9-1, their only loss coming in Tulelake earlier in the season.
Tulelake dropped to 8-1 on the season with one match remaining. The Honkers host Big Valley (3-4) next Tuesday. A Lady Honker win means a co-championship with Dunsmuir. A loss means second place for the Honkers, and an outright championship for Dunsmuir.
As is fitting for what virtually amounted to the Evergreen League championship match, the first game was a nail-biter. Dunsmuir raced out to a 6-1 lead, behind strong serving by Clara Weld, and a pair of kills by Marki Stibi.
A kill by Ashley Lee got the Lady Honkers headed back in the right direction. Two aces from Sabrina Gribble, and it was 6-4. An ace by Madee Boyd tied the game at 11-11. A Dunsmuir error gave the Lady Honkers their first lead, 12-11. (more…)
