pwb-logo.jpgFor the fourth year, PremierWest Bank and SiskiyouYouth.com are sponsoring the Basketball Challenge for varsity basketball teams in Siskiyou County: Butte Valley, Dunsmuir, Etna, Happy Camp, Mt. Shasta, Tulelake, Weed, and Yreka. The winning team’s players and coaching staff will receive custom made “Team of the Year” T-shirts.

The winner of the challenge will be the girls or boys team that is most successful during the 2010/2011 season, which is defined as the team that advances the furthest in the North Section CIF playoffs. The challenge will end at the finish of the section playoffs and does not include any state playoff games because Division-VI teams (Butte Valley, Dunsmuir, and Happy Camp) are not eligible for state playoffs. Tiebreakers also do not include state playoff games. Games against JV teams do not count. (more…)

After a less than awe inspiring offensive performance in the first half, the Etna Lady Lions and U-Prep Panthers engaged in a second half shootout, during both team’s season opening game on Tuesday night in Etna.

U-Prep scored in the first minute or so of the game to go up 2-0. A couple of minutes later, the Lady Lions tied it at 2-2, on a pair of free throws by Jessie Eiler. Neither team would score again until the 1:22 mark of the opening frame, when Sara Hoyt hit a hoop to put Etna up 4-2. A freebie by Eiler made it 5-2. U-Prep came back to tie it 5-5 on a free throw and a basket. Eiler hit two more from the charity stripe with 11 seconds left in the quarter to give Etna a 7-5 lead.

By halftime, Etna had increased its lead to 19-13. The game was tied 33-33 at the end of three quarters. (more…)

The Etna JV boys basketball team put on the most impressive performance of the night for the home crowd, plastering the U-Prep Panthers, 57-43, on Tuesday.

Speed, defense and rebounding were the keys to the Etna’s victory. The Panthers had no answer for the Lion point guard Tim Greene who maneuvered at will through the U-Prep defense. Greene, Wade Thackeray, Sawyer Eastlick, and JT Murray ruled the paint.

Murray put up 22 points, Sawyer Eastlick recorded 13 points, and Thackeray scored 10.

The Lady Lion JV girls squad lost in a heart breaker, 42-41. U-Prep led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, but Etna led 25-21 at the half, and 37-32 at the end of three quarters.

U-Prep came back to take the lead 39-37, with 6:15 to play in the game. A freebie by Etna’s Kelsey Eastlick made it 39-38. Eastlick went baseline and dished to Hayley Kaae for a bucket, putting Etna back on top 40-39, with 5:20 to go. (more…)

Yreka's Timmy Williams goes out to an early lead.

Wow! Amazing! Unbelievable! It was a day to remember.

It all started 12 months ago with the boys deciding on the way back from the 2010 State meet, that they were going to be in the top 8 this year. They trained through the summer running over 400 miles, went to running camp and dominated the competitions, ran double-day workouts for 2 months, mentally preparing themselves and honing their racing strategies over 3 months to reach their goal. Throughout the season we had to make adjustments as we realized that we were really good and ranked 5th in the state by October. The pressure was on us not to disappoint ourselves, our school, and our community by proving that we could back up all the hype. These boys were mentally and physically trained to take the pressure and realize a dream, to be in the top 3. We won the NAL Championship, we dominated the Section and then to our surprise and to everybody else, we won the Division 4 State Championships! Unbelievable.

Timmy led the race for the first mile at a quick pace of 4:48 with Eric, Clayton, David and Christian close behind. Matt and Kris were also moving fast as they came through the first mile under 5:00. We were leading the team scoring at the mile and the 2.1 mile mark. The last mile was tough as Timmy started to pay the price a bit for his quick start, and the other teams were starting to make their final surges. Eric looked strong and was in 5th place with 800m to go, while Timmy passed by me in 28th. Clayton battled up the hill with a huge pack next to him, while David was 20 places behind. Christian was closing the gap as our 5th man. As they ran by I was trying to count places of the other teams and realized that we had to have gotten one of the top 3 spots. (more…)

DORRIS – It was the match up that most 8-Man football fans likely wanted to see for the section championship—a rematch from earlier in the season when the Butte Valley Bulldogs defeated the Dunsmuir Tigers, 27-26, in Dunsmuir. There was little doubt that the two teams were the best in the division.

The Bulldogs earned home field throughout the playoffs by running the table in the regular season, and then winning their first two playoff games against Loyalton and Princeton in convincing fashion. Dunsmuir found its way to the title game by rolling into Westwood for a semi-final game, and cutting down the Lumberjacks. Dunsmuir’s only regular season loss was at the hands of the Bulldogs.

The championship game on Wednesday night had just about everything a football fan could ask for—five lead changes, defensive scores, controversial calls, tough defense and plenty of big offensive plays.

Perhaps the biggest play of the game came with a little over six minutes to go in the final frame. Dunsmuir was leading 34-32 and had a third-and-goal from the Bulldog 12-yard-line. The Tigers threw on third down, and Bulldog Will Gentry picked off the pass and raced 86 yards to pay dirt for what would prove to be the game and section winning touchdown. It was also Gentry who intercepted a Tiger pass and returned it for a touchdown when the two teams met in the regular season.

“I was just hoping no one would catch me from behind,” said Gentry after the game.

To start the game, Butte Valley won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. Dunsmuir’s opening drive stalled and the Tigers were forced to punt.

The Bulldogs went to work on their first possession from their own three-yard-line. One play and 97 yards later, Colten Struble put Butte Valley up 6-0, with 8:58 left in the first quarter. The 2-point conversion failed. (more…)
