For most of the first three quarters the game had the look and feel of another Miner loss. Yreka trailed the Bonanza Antlers in the 6th place game at the Basin Best tourney in Henley by as many as 13 points and had never led. The Miners were down, 32-21, in the third quarter, when they went on a 9-2 mini-run to draw within two baskets, 34-30, going into the final frame.
Jayson Sadowski got the run started with a pair of freebies to make it 32-23, with 2:55 to go in the quarter. A steal-n-score by Jeremy Cox made it 32-25. Bonanza added two free throws, 34-25. Tyler Johnson hit a bucket for the Miners, 34-27. A put back by Michael Elfgen made it 34-29. Cox closed out the third quarter scoring with a freebie, 34-30.
The Antlers responded by scoring the first five points of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to nine points, 39-30.
But, back came the Miners. One from the charity stripe by Johnson and a basket from Kevin Berry made it 39-33, with 4:20 left in the game. A Sadowski steal-n-score and a Cox hoop made it a one possession game, 39-37, with 2:53 to go. Two Antler throws made the score 41-37. Johnson dropped in a deuce, 41-39. Bonanza added a free throw, 42-39. A basket by Cox cut the deficit to a single point, 42-41, with 1:05 to play. Johnson tied the game with a free throw, 42-42, with a minute to go. (more…)

The Yreka Miners and the Henley Hornets met in the Basin Best basketball tourney consolation bracket on Wednesday afternoon at Henley High School. The squads met earlier this month, with the Hornets dominating the Miners the entire game, leading 30-15 at the half, and going on to win 61-30. Henley downed the Miners again in their second meeting, but the path to victory was a bit different.
The Miners went out to a 4-0 lead to start the game on a pair of freebies, and a bucket by Dean Schafer. Henley came back with seven straight points on a hoop by Colby Mueller, a trey by Jack Mitchell, and then a deuce by Mitchell.
A free throw by Yreka’s Jeremy Cox and a put back by Ryan Kennedy tied the contest at 7-7. The Hornets regained the lead, 10-7, on a 3-ball by Josh Overstreet, and would lead for the remainder of the game. Henley led by as many as nine points in the second quarter.
Trailing 22-13, with 5:00 to play in the half, the Miners put on a scoring spurt. A basket by Schafer made it 22-15. Kennedy knocked the ball loose and Cox took it coast-to-coast for a bucket, 22-17. One from the charity stripe by Tyler Johnson, cut the Hornet lead to four points, 22-18, with a minute to go in the half. Brandon Sherrill scored for Henley, 24-18. Cox dropped in a shot with three seconds to play in the half, making it 24-20 at the intermission. (more…)
