The Yreka Lady Miners sprinted out to a 12-2 lead over the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears on Thursday night in Miner Gym, with six of the points coming on steal-n-scores by Ashley Ensminger. It looked like the rout was on, but the Lady Bears managed to come back and make a game of it, before falling 40-35.

After Yreka went up 8-2 on Ensminger’s third fast break basket, Mackenzie Allen dropped in back-to-back buckets to push the lead to 12-2. A 3-ball by Mt. Shasta’s  Jeanette Ricci made it 12-5. Yreka led 13-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Yreka led 15-9, when two steal-n-scores by Ricci made it a one possession game, 15-13. That would be as close as the Lady Bears would come for the remainder of the game.

Yreka led 26-18 at the half. After Mt. Shasta put up three quick points to begin the third quarter, the Lady Miners notched the next six, extending their lead to 11 points 32-21. Mackenzie Allen set up Kayla Stonier for a hoop, 28-21. Freebies by Dani Deegan and Allie Charleboix made it, 30-21. Kayla Stonier made it 32-21 off a nice dish by big sister, Kelsey Stonier. Opinion

I’m about to get in hot water with this one. I just know it. Let me start with a question. Do we as parents, educators, and coaches want our young people to have self esteem based on the everyone gets a blue ribbon approach? Or, do we want our young people to grow their self esteem through achievement?

I first started thinking about this during a couple of high school awards banquets a few years ago. During the fall sports awards, a soccer team pretty much had an award for every player. I was astonished. There was offensive MVP, defensive MVP, forward MVP, midfielder MVP, fullback MVP and…goalie MVP (That must have been an incredibly tough selection since there was only one goalie), as well as a host of others like most improved, most inspirational, best reserve player cheerleader, best cookie provider, and best drinks brought to games. Okay, so they didn’t do the cheerleader, cookie or drinks ones, but I’m not kidding, I think every player got an award. My kid was on that team, and received the offensive MVP award. When we got into the truck to go home, he said, “That was stupid.”

No kidding.

More or less the same thing happened at a girls basketball awards dinner that winter. Just about every player got something. As my kid would say, “that was stupid.”

Before writing this, I did a bit of reading on the internet of scholarly articles to see what the research had shown concerning what I call “artificial bolstering of self esteem” and it’s effects on actual achievement. By artificial bolstering, I mean rewarding kids for basically being alive and breathing in an effort to increase their self esteem, something an educator friend of mine calls the “blue ribbon soccer mentality.” Nearly all the research focused on self esteem’s correlation to achievement in school or in the work place.

What I gleaned from the papers I read was that there is a moderate correlation between self esteem and achievement. However, that correlation seems to work in the opposite direction of what the “everyone gets a blue ribbon” people want to believe. Actual achievement helps build self esteem, not the other way around. In other words, engineering self esteem through rewards for nothing more than being alive, does not appear to increase achievement.

What a shock! Who would have thought that people feel good about themselves when they actually accomplish something. I mean, who would have thought that students might think of themselves as being smart when they ace a test, or even pull off a “B.” Or, who would have thought that when a player makes the football team and earns a starting spot through hard work and dedication, he would feel good about himself (or herself, in a few cases of females making football teams). A CalFire employee learns defensive tactics as part of the ADJ program

In just three years, with the program coordination of Tad White, the College of the Siskiyous Administration of Justice (ADJ) Program has quadrupled its enrollment, moved into a new 10,000 square foot training space, and raised over $700,000 in support for the program through grant writing and generous donations from the community.

“No one does this alone,” says White, “the Program success to date has come about collaboratively by carefully researching funding and equipment opportunities, listening to student needs, having committed and skilled instructors, staff, and a local Advisory Committee made up of the administrative teams of the majority of the Law enforcement departments within our region, along with focused college leadership and strong community support.”

COS has offered the Administration of Justice Program for the past twenty years and has served thousands of students. Successful students of the Program have included those recently graduating from high school who wanted an AA degree, (or those who just wanted to gain a hiring edge on related jobs), students who prepared successfully for four-year universities and specific law enforcement academies, and individuals who were already professionally employed and wanted additional skills and knowledge to improve their job status, pay scale, and effectiveness in their existing job.

In addition to program coordination, White is one of thirty-five COS adjunct instructors who are specialists and professionals in their fields ready to share their knowledge and interest. After working in law enforcement for twelve years and as an educator for twenty-five years (teaching all grade levels), White decided to combine his passion for law enforcement and work as an instructor for the College of the Siskiyous in collaboration with the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department. White’s family law enforcement roots run deep in Siskiyou County and beyond. White is a third generation officer, and proud father of Ethan White, who followed in the family footsteps and is a now a fourth generation police officer. (more…)

The Yreka Miners varsity basketball team put another one in the win column on Monday night, defeating the Rogue River Chieftains, 55-47, at Miner Gym.

It was Rogue River that had the flow going in its direction during the first quarter, with the Chieftains holding a 16-12 lead at the start of the second frame. The Miners, however, came back to take a 26-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Chieftains hit the first two baskets of the second half, regaining the lead 29-26. A hoop by Miner Jeremy Cox made it 29-28. After a Rogue River free throw, Ryan Kennedy dropped in a pair of freebies to tie the game, 30-30. With 3:30 to go in the third quarter, a put back by Cox gave the Miners a 32-30 lead. A steal by Kevin Berry led to a layup by Tyler Johnson, making the score 34-30. Cox dished to Jayson Sadowski for a bucket, extending Yreka’s lead to 36-30. A Chieftain 3-pointer cut the Miner lead to one possession, 36-33, but a put back at the buzzer by Grant Cowley upped the Yreka advantage to five points, 38-33, going into the final frame. (more…)
