Etna varsity girls coach Les Helsley’s pick for the Happy Toes Etna Lady Lions Basketball Player of the Week is Tiana Besoain. Helsley said that Besoain has improved steadily all season and is now a consistent contributor. She had her career high in both points and rebounds last week against Weed. (more…)

Etna varsity boys basketball coach Mike Pendley cited “better decision making” as part of the reason for his pick of Nicky DelaRosa for the Scott Valley Fire Protection District Basketball Defender of the Week. Of course, the 21 points DelaRosa put up against Weed last week probably didn’t hurt his chances…or, the 15 points against Burney. (more…)

The West Valley Eagles refused to show last Friday, due to a chance of snow. On Wednesday, with the threat of a stray snowflake looming, the Eagles made the daring journey up the always treacherous I-5 to Yreka’s Miner Gym. Unfortunately for Yreka, the Miners were unable to do what a “chance of snow” did the prior week–stop West Valley.

The Eagles dominated the first quarter of play, outscoring the Miners 16-2. Yreka’s only basket came from Jeremy Cox at the 4:45 mark. The Miners held their own for the remainder of the game, and at times had mini scoring runs, but still fell by double digits, 52-39.

Trailing 21-2 in the second quarter, Yreka put up seven straight points. A put back by Cox got the mini-run started. Cox then dished to Ryan Kennedy for a hoop. Cody Hoff nailed a 3-ball to make the score 21-9, with 3:29 left in the first half. Going into the intermission, the Eagles led by 15 points, 27-12.

Yreka made another push in the third quarter, with West Valley up 29-14. Tyler Johnson scored to make it 29-16. Hoff hit another long-range shot, 29-19. A freebie from Kennedy, cut the deficit to nine points, 29-20. Cox grabbed a rebound and went coast-to-coast for a bucket, making it a 7-point game, 29-22. (more…)

Tyler Johnson is Yreka coach Christian Birch’s pick for the Miner Perk Boys Basketball Player of the Week. Birch said that Johnson’s work ethic and point production have both improved. Johnson put up 7 points against Weed last week, and pulled down 6 boards. Johnson followed up with a double-double against West Valley this week, with 10 points and 10 rebounds, as well as a 9-point performance against Central Valley. (more…)

Mt. Shasta Coach Kirk Andrus’ choice for the Pepsi of Mt. Shasta Lady Bear Basketball Player of the Week is Janelle Jaegel.

Against Modoc, “She controlled the game on the offensive and defensive ends,” said Andrus.

Jaegel had 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals in the Modoc game.

The Yreka Miners boys soccer team improved to 2-2 in the Northern Athletic League and 3-6 overall with a 5-3 win over the visiting Central Valley Falcons on Tuesday night.

The Miners got a pair of goals each from Trevor Daugherty and Julian Mendoza. The Falcons also scored a goal on themselves. Alex Luckey had three helpers, and Cesar Orozco had an assist. Noah Lawson notched the win in the net for Yreka. (more…)

College of the Siskiyous Eagle Taylor Cox has verbally committed to play football for the Division-I University of Kansas Jayhawks on a full-ride shcolarship. Cox met with new Jayhawk coach Charlie Weis on Monday at the COS campus.

Cox is the Eagles’ career rushing leader (2744), holds the single game rushing record (326), and the single game TD record (5). He is tied for the career TD record (28), and is second only to former Mt. Shasta High School and COS Eagle star Patrick Lunney in single season rushing yardage.

Coach Weis took over the Kansas program in December. Weis has been part of the coaching staff on four Super Bowl champion NFL teams. Weis was the National College Coach of the Year in 2005, and led Notre Dame to back-to-back BCS bowl game wins in 2005 and 2006, according to an article on the Kansas Jayhawk website. (more…)

It had been a while since the Yreka Lady Miners soccer team had scored a goal–like almost a full year–with the last tally coming in a 3-0 win over Gridley in the first round of the playoffs last season. That changed in a big way on Tuesday at Miner Stadium, as the Lady Miners fried the Central Valley Falcons, 6-0, in a dominating performance.

The first Yreka goal of the season came off the foot of frosh Kara Jackson at the 8-minute mark of the match. Jackson out-fought a Falcon defender and found the back of the net with her shot.

Once the drought had been broken, the Lady Miners went to the well in rapid fire succession. Goal number two came six minutes after the first, with senior Miranda Parsons doing the honors. Jackson set up Michaella Ensele with a nice cross for the third score, 24 minutes into the match.

Yreka’s next two goals came on penalty kicks. With about 11 minutes left in the first half, Tayler Dowse knocked one home. Seven minutes later, Tianna Cruz was taken down from behind in the box, and she made good on her penalty kick, giving Y-Town a 5-0 lead at the intermission. (more…)

College of the Siskiyous has released the 2011 fall semester honors list for academic excellence. The lists are comprised of the President’s List, which requires a student to achieve a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.75 to 4.00, and the Dean’s List, requiring a GPA of 3.50 to 3.74.
