mt-shasta-v-weed-front.jpgMOUNT SHASTA – The Mt. Shasta Bears came into their match with the Weed Cougars on Thursday leading the Shasta Cascade League. The two-time defending champions had two serious challengers—the 4-2 Cougars and the 4-2 Fall River Bulldogs.

Now they have just one challenger left.

John Holst scored the only goal Mt. Shasta really needed 12 minutes into the match off a pass from David coffe-break-revised.jpgCastaneda. With nine minutes left in the first half, Allison Titus blasted a shot past the Weed keeper for some insurance, making it 2-0 for the Bears. Andrew Campbell had the assist.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Nikki Roda had a sweet assist to Sam Wooten for the Bears third goal.

The Cougars pressed throughout the game, but the Bear defense shut down the speedy Weed forwards, not allowing a significant number of scoring chances. When the Cougars did get off a good shot, Bear keeper Andrew McLane came up with the save, sometimes in spectacular fashion.

The Bears (6-1) have games remaining with Fall River (4-2), Trinity (4-4) and winless Burney. A win against Fall River would lock up a third straight SCL title or Mt. Shasta.
