DORRIS – The Butte Valley Bulldogs won both the varsity and junior varsity games against the visiting Dunsmuir Tigers, on Wednesday night. The Bulldog varsity prevailed 60-49, and the JVs won 53-39.
In the varsity game, the Bulldogs never trailed. Late in the first quarter, the score was tied 9-9, when Steven Berengue sandwiched 3-balls around a Tiger hoop by Lt Hisey, to put Butte Valley up 15-11 going into the second quarter.
Berengue also scored the first two baskets of the second quarter to up the Bulldogs lead to eight points, 19-11. However, the Tigers came roaring back to close to within a single bucket.
After a freebie by Tiger Zach Shirley, Nate Gonzales hit a trey to make it 19-14. Caleb Levesque scored for the Bulldogs, 21-14. Matt Norton connected for Dunsmuir, and then Hisey hit from downtown to cut the gap to 21-19.
Butte Valley led 23-21, when the Bulldogs began to take control of the contest. Evan Panella put up three points the hard way, upping the Bulldog lead to 26-21. Berengue nailed a 3-pointer, 29-21. Jeremy Lopez gave Butte Valley a double digit lead, 31-21, with a steal-n-score. Levesque finished off the first half with a Bulldog bucket, sending the teams into the break with Butte Valley leading 33-21.
The Bulldogs maintained a double digit margin through most of the third quarter, leading by as many as 14 points, and went into the final frame with a 9-point advantage, 44-35.
The Tigers began the fourth quarter with one last push. Hisey dished to Jake Mekeel for a bucket, 44-37. Dunsmuir came within two possessions when Gonzales hit from behind the arc, 44-40. Jose Avalos scored on a put back for the Bulldogs, 46-40. Gonzales answered for Dunsmuir, 46-42, but that would be the last serious threat the Tigers posed.
Avalos scored three straight baskets, making it a double digit lead again for the Bulldogs, 52-42. Butte Valley went on to win, 60-49.
Steven Berengue led all scorers with 23 points, including three 3-pointers. Jose Avalos put up 15, and Arturs Vorobjovs had 9 points for the Bulldogs.
Lt Hisey led Dunsmuir with 11 points and hit three 3-pointers. Nate Gonzlaes scored 10 points. Zach Shirley and Jake Mekeel each added 7 points for the tigers.
Butte Valley (6-10, 2-2) hosts Big Valley (6-8, 2-1) on Friday.
Dunsmuir (6-9, 0-3) goes to Happy (3-7, 1-2) camp on Friday.
