YREKA – The Yreka Miners had their chances against the Corning Cardinals on Friday, but were largely unable to execute with men in scoring position, resulting in a 6-1 loss.
The Miners threatened in their first at bat, when they moved a man into scoring position with one out. After the Yreka leadoff batter hit a soft liner to second base for an out, Lane Wilson took a walk. A single by Zach Salvestro moved Wilson to second base, but the next two batters went down swinging to end the inning.
Joe Wilson reached on an error to start the second inning, but was erased when Devin Howard reached on a fielder’s choice. Howard stole second, but again the next two batters struck out, ending another Miner opportunity.
Corning led off the top of the third inning with a double. The next Cardinal batter ripped a rope to center field, but a diving catch by Andrew Ward temporarily saved a run. Wilson fanned the next batter, and it appeared that the Miners might escape the inning without allowing a run. A passed ball allowed the Corning runner to move to third. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs. The Miners got what they needed to get out of the inning, when the next batter hit a slow bouncer towards second base. However, Yreka was unable to convert, allowing the runner to score from third. Corning led 1-0 at the end of 2 1/2 innings.
Corning added another run in the top of the fourth inning courtesy of a walk, a passed ball and an error. The Cardinals led off the fifth inning with a dinger by Tanner McIntyre. The Miners got a man to second base with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but were unable to plate him, leaving Corning with a 3-0 lead after five full innings.
Yreka finally broke through in the sixth inning. Wilson walked to lead off, and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Salvestro walked, but was out when Kurt Lorenzini reached on a fielder’s choice, while Wilson moved to third base on the play. An infield hit by Ward scored Wilson. Lorenzini and Ward would move to second and third base on a passed ball. Howard was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Yreka was unable to add any more runs and trailed 3-1 after six innings.
Corning added three runs in the seventh inning to seal the win 6-1.
For Yreka, Andrew Ward was 1/3 with an RBI. Lane Wilson took a pair of walks and scored. Zach Salvestro went 1/2, with a walk. Devin Howard was 1/2, and Joe Wilson went 1/3. Wilson started on the mound and took the loss, allowing three runs, five hits, and two walks, while striking out five Cardinals in six innings. David Ellison pitched the seventh inning, giving up three runs and four hits, while striking out one batter.
Tanner McIntyre led Corning, going 2/3 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and an RBI. McIntyre also notched the complete game win, allowing four hits, three walks and striking out 13.
With the loss, Yreka falls to 6-6 overall and 0-3 in the Northern Athletic League. The Miners travel to Cottonwood to take on West Valley on Tuesday, March 31.
